Seeking Tips for a 2-Month Trip to Southern Thailand, Starting in Hat Yai

I’m planning a 2-month trip to Southern Thailand, starting in Hat Yai. My goal is to explore authentic Thai culture, avoid overly touristy spots (e.g., Phuket), and experience the “real” Thailand. I’m also looking for budget-friendly islands to visit and would like to spend longer periods (around 2 weeks) in a few places to soak in the local vibe.
Does anyone have recommendations for towns, islands, or lesser-known spots that fit this vibe? I’d also appreciate tips on long-stay accommodations or any hidden gems.

??? A trip to the south starting in Hat Yai?? Then you already are in the south!!😂

I was in that area a long time ago, so maybe the following is not up to date.

That far south of Thailand is not really Thailand. You can read about the history of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat to get an idea about them.

There are people out there who want to separate from Thailand - since decades.

When I was there nobody wanted to travel in the dark because of the risk of attacks.

If any of this is new to you then better check again where you want to go.

Being honest all I can say is sadly you are about 30 years late for this trip.  Just stating facts. My first trip here in 1978 was to Hadyai, and Samilla on the way to Langkawi.  The whole south was undiscovered. It really was heaven.

Thank you for ideas already, found some new places. 🙂

Time of Year:
    •    February to April (60 days, ending before Songkran).

Travel Style:
    •    Traveling alone.
    •    Using local buses (and possibly trains) for intercity travel—preferably no more than 3 hours per ride.
    •    No car or motorbike rentals.
    •    A mix of “like a local” and “like a tourist” experiences.

East Coast Considerations:
    •    I’ve visited Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao several times before, so no need this time.
    •    Unsure about Nakhon Si Thammarat—open to suggestions.

Preliminary Itinerary:
    •    Fly from Bangkok to Hat Yai.
    •    Hat Yai (including a trip to Songkhla).
    •    Satun  (including a trip to Pak Bara - Tarutao National Park )
    •    Trang (including a trip to Koh Muk).
    •    ? Phatthalung (worth stopping here?).
    •    Krabi Town (including a trip to Ao Nang).
    •    Koh Yao Noi.
    •    Khao Sok National Park.
    •    ? Phang Nga (open to ideas).
    •    ? Surat Thani (not sure if it’s worth staying).
    •    ? Chumphon.
    •    Fly back to Bangkok.

More tips welcome

Nothing much at all to see and do in Phatthalung, other than the lake and see waterbirds, but you can see much of that if you so desire when in Songkhla, also if you're doing Satun-Trang-Krabi then going to Phatthalung is kinda backtracking. NST has a very important and impressive wat, and not much else of interest, but if you've already seen a few of the big Bangkok wats then there's not much point going out your way to see one more big impressive wat. There are some nice beaches and resorts along the NST coastline but they're not easy to reach without your own transport. Krabi town is quite nice, Ao Nang too, and definetly go to Railay for amazing scenery. If you want to see more islands you can consider Koh Lanta. PhangNga Bay is famous for the karst islands and is mainly visited by tours either from Krabi or Phuket. There are loads of tour agents in Krabi town and you'll soon get all the details on visiting the attractions. At Krabi there's also the hot springs, and Wat Tham Sua with a cave temple. Surat Thani is ok but from a tourist perspective it's mainly just a place you pass through on route to Samui and the other islands, likewise Chumphon, the jumping off point for Koh Tao. A more interesting route from Krabi would be PhangNga - Khao Lak - Ranong - Chumphon.

Looking good now, I think you've planned a perfect route. Personally I'd skip Satun provincial capital and just head straight for Pakbaba. I've been a couple of times to Koh Tarutao and think it's the least impressive island there. Much better are Koh Bulon Lae and Koh Lipe.
