Featured Replies

There is never an excuse for extreme violence, the taxi driver should have said I'm done taxi driving I'm going back to the rice farm.

  • Lol. He should do a year in jail and all licences revoked permanently

  • The cops should randomly pull taxis over and check for weapons.   Very common knowledge drivers carry all sorts of weapons. Iron bars come quickly to mind.   Don't ask why all thes

Probably a fine, a suspended sentence, the transport ministry will do nothing and he'll be back driving next week.

They subdued the taxi driver until police arrived and escorted all parties involved to the police station for further questioning.

Does this mean the man with the slashed face had to go, too? Animals.  Did the Taxi Driver give a super Wei and order Grab for dinner?

Don't ask why all these incidents involve taxis and not Grab vehicles 😳😉

Asking Thai police to be proactive is wishful thinking.

with calls for stricter measures and swifter action from authorities to prevent similar occurrences.

It starts with everyone acting responsibly and acting like adults. Thai have this saving face BS wrapped around them. The simple truth is that Thai have the emotional maturity of a 7 year old kid. If Thai don't get their way they act out and often get very violent. Still a partly barbaric society.

Another comment was that these incidents give thailand a bad name. I suspect they are eluding to how it affects cash in their pockets from tourist income. It should be about ethics, maturity and taking responsibility. Thai always deflect the truth!

Start revoking licenses, clean up the taxi mafias, eventually you'll weed out the trash and end up with respectable drivers that people can trust. There are way too many taxi drivers out there, some that should never be allowed to drive a tricycle let alone a taxi, they need to be purged.

Thankfully, the taxi driver is a dying profession.

Ride hailing apps are taking over, and soon self-driving vehicles will negate the need for any human interaction whatsoever, eliminating incidents like this.

Adapt, or die.

Case closed.

Don't forget the basket of chicken essence presented to the victim and the subsequent feelgood stories of taxi drivers returning hundreds of thousands of Baht that some forgetful tourist left in a cab. 😉

Hopefully the penalty will be very stiff and he will see some prison time, where he will be able to make some new friends and be treated very warmly by the fellow inmates. Slashing someone's face is a pretty horrific crime and one can only hope the police take this seriously. We do know how powerful the taxi mafias are so I tend to doubt the penalty will be as harsh as it needs to be.

Just accept, Thai is a culture of extreme anger, commencing with youths and ending on older people, women in particular have ample hidden anger in their behavior.
When an anti-anger pill is developed it should be field tested in Thailand and tech drivers would be a good group to start with.

allegedly slashing a passenger's face with a knife during a heated argument

Bet it was a foreigner.

I'd like to know what he did to upset the taxi driver.

As I said on another post  about "Stabbing over a fried Egg" ,..  and the same applies to this post = Thailand needs more  Hospitals the  Mentally disturbed people there, of which there are a growing number

I had a taxi ride in BKk recently, he took me to another location 25kl from my destination, a misunderstanding, he was a nice chap, I paid him the extra when we finally arrived. You never know what will spark these drivers off or what weapons are under the seat

I stood on sukumvit Rd , bkk, and hailed not one but 5 taxi's, to take me to sai mai near Don mueng, they all refused except for number 5, he put his meter  on and it come up to 275 baht, I gave him 500 b, there is no ethical standards with cab drivers.

Damn, this is scary.

Probably over dramatized as all we t to police station none to hospital. Nevertheless

Funny, no excuse for foreigners misbehaving here , but it's funny how hysterical the cops and Thai public get over farang committing minor misdemeanors and then we have this. Or... People being killed in crosswalks.

It's just the poors lol bickering.

This and the Phuket airport sandwich ripoff should both be banner news at Guardian

There was no sandwich ripoff at Phuket Airport if the report was correct - the woman knew exactly what she was ordering and the prices were clearly marked. The two stories have no connection...

There are nutjobs in every country not just Thailand. In the near 20 years I have lived here I have had no issues with any Thai but a few with farangs.

RESPECT is highly valued in Thai society.

Don't understand whatever happened why they couldn't meet at the Police Station or just take another cab after documenting the Drivers ID and Taxi registration.

The thread didn't mention any compensation. Maybe its a little early for that or as this gone beyond the pay-up stage.

What the heck is this? When are they going to clean up the mad taxi guys, and the mafia activities in the taxi business. Should people need to be scared to take a taxi or a motorcycle ride? They ae supposed to give the service of bringing people home safely. They talk about having license revoked??? That should be a given. After that he should have a fine on 100k baht and 2 year in jail. But, they never going to do that, as all is never mind here. Incompetence all the way from drivers and the companies up to government level.

According to the auto translate of the video clip: the passenger asked for a metered ride. the taxi driver refused. Which made the passenger slam the door hard. This upset the taxi driver and in an altercation he used the knife to slash the face of the passenger. It's not reported if it was for self defense during the altercation or if there was some provocative fight or whatever. What I found strange that the news clip shows the driver in hospital with bruises and arm bandage but not the victim with the slashed face. Maybe the taxi driver was beaten off scene or during the restraining efforts?

If you saw the news video in the topic you would see there was no mention of a foreigner, all Thais involved in this incident

Presumably to pick up another passenger within time. I don't know where they go, but when I set up a pickup they are always coming from a passenger drop.

That's the nature of the job dontchaknow 🤯

Maybe that's the case in a built up area or town centre... where I live there are a group of 6 drivers who are managed by one of them, each taking a turn to drive.. between rides they go home and wait for a call.

Don't ya know

What difference would that make?

Agree. People employed in positions where public safety / danger is present / paramount should be automatically jailed for violence.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Being a taxi driver in BKK could be the definition of madness.

Terrible income, stress all the time, terrible environmental conditions...

No wonder some of them are flipping.

No one is putting a gun to their head to be a taxi driver?

Too many comments trying to explain this tragic act, by focusing on the job, the stress, the absence of some kind of alternate work, and so on.

How about describing the situation as it is.

The culture here allows for a response to menial problems that includes the use of knives and guns.
