Looking forward do U.S. expats face the risk of retaliation by nations burned by Trump?

Featured Replies

He's only been back in office for a few days, and the madness has already started.

Not talking about specific cases yet, but in nations hurt by punitive Trump trade war tariffs or barbaric treatment of their nationals by U.S. immigration, do you think things may get ugly in certain countries for U.S. expats?

For example say he hits a country with 50 or 100 percent tariffs and the local economy crashes because of it. The people will know the pain comes from America. Wouldn't it be natural in such cases for the people or even governments to take out their anger on the Americans they see, the ones that live there? Even if ironically, those Americans may be very anti-Trump.

Jees man, you need some professional help.

The 'madness' is in your head, the majority of Americans that voted voted for Trump, they are onboard and welcoming his first week because he is delivering what he promised.

I think he should keep up with his hard work here so we can monitor the general mindset of the irrational left.
PS op, Trump has your back so sit back stop whining-nothing of your wild imagination is going to happen.

I forgot to mention Americans in countries he has already directly  threatened. Panama, Denmark and Canada.

It's a fact that there has been backlash against American expats before but mostly about gentrification and ugly American arrogant behavior. For examples in Mexico City and Lisbon.

Yes, if they are there illegally or commit crimes.  Obviously it would be barbaric behavior to target legal expats/tourists.

Do you think it was "natural" to intern Japanese citizens during WW2?

Danes, for one, probably aren't going to be too happy, though I suspect they would only take it out on 47. Maybe send a hit squad.

Maybe Panamanians are also going to get a little miffed. They can be much nastier than Danes.

If the guy keeps it up, I do think it's likely some nations will start taking it out on American expats. Personally, I would like Thailand to set a much more reasonable target for funds in the banks. Anybody can post 800K baht. Better, in the interest of only allowing "quality" residents, that Thailand up the amount to say, 10-25,000,000 baht for retirees, marriage visas, etc. Get rid of the riff raff. Some countries require as much as $1 million, which would be quite reasonable and certainly allow only "quality" residents.

I think MAGAs are probably itching to go home anyway, seeing that they think America is going to be "great" again, whatever that means in MAGAstan.

This has only just begun.

Colombia caved to Trump's threats but not every country is going to cave as easily. I heard that Trump was going to order that Colombian's US bank accounts be frozen. If he did outrageous stuff like that surely tit for tat against Americans could happen. Stay tuned.

While most troublesome expats are low income individuals what about those in upper income brackets that are in involved in shady businesses and criminal activity?  High income earners are able to afford a lot of "tea money" enabling them to engage in illegal practices.

Columbia caved because they were clearly in the wrong.  Every nation on this planet has sovereign rights as to who they allow to enter and for how long.  The US is no different.  And every nation clearly has the right to deport a foreign national that has been arrested for committing a crime and entered illegally to start with.

Columbia prez tried to be macho and stand up to Trump.  Trump said OK let's wreck your economy for being an <deleted>.  Colombian prez realize the backlash of a trashed economy might end with him removed from office and dropped the charade of outrage.  Sanity prevailed.  Trump was right.

I know it's hard for you to accept that last sentence.

Well, Panama can stop by using the Dollar as it's defacto currency.  Maybe the Chinese Yuan will better suit Panama.  Maybe not.  I doubt fervent nationalists in Panama will hunt Americans in the streets of Panama city.

Rounding up and deporting illegals criminally in the country, who so far have been dangerous gang members, sex offenders, terrorists and drug dealers is NOT barbaric. We know you hate Trump but do try to calm down, you aint seen nothing yet 😊

I never knew USA hast been trying to buy Greenland several times for over 150 years

Are they deporting US citizens? Are they deporting Lawful Permanent Residents? I think not.

Personally, I think he should lay off Greenland.  I doubt that there are any illegal immigrants or drug cartels in the USA from Greenland, and Denmark has refused many times over the centuries to sell Greenland to the USA.

Furthermore, under a 1917 legal agreement with the UK, the latter has first right of refusal to buy Greenland from Denmark, if Denmark does decide to sell. The USA would have to join the queue 🙂

I think Trump should tread carefully, since Denmark is quite entitled to kick out the important US Space/Satellite base in Greenland.

Any foreigner living in the U.S. without permission faces the risk of arrest and eventual deportation.

This has been true long before Trump.  All of a sudden people are mad that immigration laws are being enforced.  This must be the "madness" you are you are referring to.

Denmark and Greenland were already very friendly. If the U.S. wanted more cooperation, that could have easily happened with normal diplomacy instead of threatening to invade! So incredibly stupid.

No I am talking about all kinds of madness beyond immigration policies such as threatening friendly nations with military force. If you don't think that's insane, we have zero basis for any discussion.

were you posting about this 'madness' when obama deported over 3 million?

I believe if people are threatened and they fear that they will have to endure unacceptable hardship, they will retaliate.

Protests and/or boycotts of American products/businesses is certainly possible, including against the 180-odd US overseas military bases.

China, amongst other countries, would happily welcome the demise of the US dollar as the global currency.

Then what is the barbaric treatment you speak of?

Problem there, is that many "quality residents", those with that sort of funds, are or were criminals themselves, obtaining that money by taking advantage of others. Many people aren't retiring with 10-25 million baht as savings. And those that retire here on what's asked, aren't riff raff but putting that money into providing for wives and children here, contributing to the Thai economy, besides those that are just here to buy women and go from one to another.
