A bunch of folks here claimed this guy was just spending his time with bargirls because he left his family home. I advise those folk to walk away in shame

It's just an assumption but could be true

Very sad ending to this story. But me thinks theirs more bad news to come, their probably holding back in full respect of the family.

RIP mate

I've always found this 'wanting the body' shipped back an odd idea.

Hardly anyone buries bodies in the UK these days, it's always burn and urn.

So why not burn it in Thailand and just ship the ashes?

Why do people travel overseas without insurance?
Families have enough to deal with when a person dies away from home without having to fundraise to get a body home

I leave instructions for NOK to have me cremains in place and scatter the remains wherever it happened, always leave them with the policy details

Guilty as charged. There are so many things to weigh and consider. Much of it is balancing risk and financial situation  against the odds of something happening. I make about $1665 a month SS, a pittance in the S but can live nicely here. I have medicare insurance in the US. I have $200,000 US in a mutual fund. I keep between $5000 and $10,000 in liquid cash in case of emergencies. I have comparison shopped for insurance from covid onward but haven't made a decision. The sticking point in the past was whether a substantial insurance premium would take a significant amount out of my living budget and place my finances at risk. Thanks for the reminder. Cheers.

Scab money > fly to Thailand for two weeks > burn and urn > return home !

Surely his friends he was going to visit must have some idea of where he was or what he was doing ? 🤔

It's a tragic story.

However, why fundraising?

Free fund

Of course, any idea how expensive it is to get someone back and insurance doesnt pay up? Your family might fo the same if it was you.

No, my family would have urged me to provide a proper insurance.

Yes, another kind of popular business. You're not paying for any insurance but get it multiple times back by fundraising.

If the family has doubts they can get an autopsy which might be conclusive

An autopsy is typically mandatory any time a foreigner dies outside of a hospital, so we can assume that will happen without the family needing to request it.

RIP

But "From a young age, he wanted to be where the action was, particularly for birthday celebrations." not for his kids' birthday though.

There is a very good possibility, given the number of cameras here. If the family has doubts they can get an autopsy which might be conclusive, at that point it is likely to be kept private. There are so many things that can happen. This is too sad.

Highly unlikely we'll ever hear the full story.  There is rarely any follow-up in the news once they report a person is dead.

Why does everyone bitch about these?

Nobody is forced to donate to these fund raisers.

I am not sure normal travel insurance would cover repatriated costs, how would the family even be able to claim on an insurance if the policy holder is dead?.

had enough to go on a holiday with friends,   sorry to see anyone die   but you should travel with proper insurance or funds in case of emergency.  if the family cant afford to fly him home he (we all) should think twice about travelling

There is plenty travel insurance available for us$60 for 30 days, includes repatriation of body.

If you can afford to travel to Thailand it's hard to understand why people don't buy travel insurance.

Still RIP young man.

So what?   It is not directed at anyone, nor involves anyone, who disapproves of the concept.

Maybe if someone takes there own life the ins may not pay out. I supposewe will find out in due course. I was in Bangkok at the weekend and I did think about this guy after reading about him still missing. Sad end neverless and hopefully his family grieve in peace too.

His estate could claim.

Why?

Are you thinking he died from on overdose of communion wine after attending Sunday services?

People only suggested he was out seeking wine, women and song; doesn't seem bigoted to me.

RIP and Sad of course but I don't think anyone's speculation when he was missing was out of line.

The fact that the RTP are not saying how or why he died suggests foul play which would alarm potential visitors to Thailand. We do not know how well-travelled he was but, at 33 years old, he was not that young and should at his age know how to avoid difficult situations.
