   If there was no jail time for smuggling drugs  then everyone would be doing it .

   Everyone would be going back with a rucksack full of drugs , the only reason why they don't do it is because of the harsh prison sentences for doing so

In a swift turn of events, Phuket police have arrested an Australian couple suspected of snatching bags from tourists in the popular Rawai area. The incidents took place last Wednesday, 19th February, prompting swift action by local law enforcement.

 

The first victim, a foreign tourist, reported her bag was snatched while she stood outside a convenience store on Soi Samakkhi 4, around 9.30pm on Tuesday, 21st February. Her belongings, including a mobile phone and personal documents, were taken as two thieves sped away on a motorcycle.

 

A similar theft occurred just an hour later; this time, a different tourist fell victim outside a massage shop near Rawai Beach. Here too, a mobile phone was the target.

 

 

 

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, police identified the getaway vehicle as a white and red Honda PCX, rented by 25-year-old Sam, a visiting Australian. Further investigations led officers to Sam and his 36-year-old girlfriend, Susan, both identified as the perpetrators. A raid on their accommodation today yielded vital evidence, including the motorcycle and the clothing worn during the crimes.

 

Charged under Section 336 of the Criminal Law, the couple now faces serious consequences for the thefts, with penalties including up to five years' imprisonment and a significant fine. Utilising a motorcycle in the commission of the crimes could see their sentence enhanced.

 

This incident has sparked heightened vigilance among tourists and local officials, underlining the need for stringent policing in tourist hotspots, reported The Thaiger.

No its not. Maybe read it properly, bags were snatched containing documents, money and phones. Happened to me once, I went home early as I had no passport and phone, totally ruined my holiday. Having a certain amount of drugs in some countries carries the death sentence, what do you think about that?

Transfer them to Pattaya and have them pick up Trash for 5 years.  They would probably only make a small dent but you have to start somewhere.

What's the deal with these new generation thief tourists preying on other tourists? A clean cut Belgian tourist stole my new 160 dollar Adidas running shoes  at the reception of our hostel. They were confiscated by staff who identified them from a photo. Another time some german "backpackers" ransacked by bunk and stole 150 Euros out of my backpack which was stashed in a secret pocket! Amazing how they  found it. They were the only other people staying in the room and had a straight face like they were innocent.
