A friend of mine who lives in Sisaket has a physical disability. He wants to buy a new car and have it modified to his disability (extra gas pedal). He got a blank stare from his car dealer. Anyone know what to do?

He has a prosthetic leg and needs an extra gas pedal to the left of the brake pedal. In Belgium he drives such a car.

Ahh ok Modern cars are drive by wire, would think a decent mechanic could move the gas peddle to another position.

An 'extra' accelerator pedal seems exceptionally odd and dangerous.... 

 

 

I'm assuming you mean... your friend wants the 'Accelerator on the left and brake on the right'... i.e. a pedal reversal...    Nevertheless, I cant see how this would make a difference, but then again I can't picture his predicament.

 

As Ralph suggests - hand held controls seems far more reliable and not uncommon...  perhaps its best to go that route.

I'm surprised that was legal anywhere in Europe....

 

But from a practical point of view, I'm assuming his left leg is more functional than his right, and his right gets in the way, when trying to use the accelerator. 

 

Hand held seems the only common sense way to go - that photo looks lethal...

I'm going to presume here that your pal has a prosthetic right leg and a functioning left one. If that's the case, then moving the accelerator over to the left of the brake pedal makes perfect sense. And from from the look of the photo, that's what he has and he is used to.

 

A better solution, IMO than having a hand throttle, which would entail 'one hand steering' which is not regarded as very safe. 

 

Thais are pretty creative when it comes to novel solutions and I'm sure if you/he keep asking around, you'll find someone who can help. Good luck

My FIL in the UK had that same problem. He lost his right leg at about 5 years old.

 

The local garage fitted an extra throttle to the left of the brake pedal  and the other end was placed on top of the existing throttle. it was a steel rod with a throttle pedal at the left end, and (I think) a clip or a clamp at the main pedal end. The steel rod was clamped to the floor of the car with U brackets.

 

I can see it in my mind and describe it, but I have no picture to show of it.

 

When able bodied people drove the car a small box was placed over the extra pedal.

 

The car was a Triumph 2000 with an automatic gearbox.

 

An alternative may be a hand throttle, but that may be more difficult to fit to a car.

 

Sadly I cannot ask him as he died in 1998 and the car probably was sold or scrapped.

He will have to buy a modification that clamps onto the existing pedal or a push / pull hand control.

I have a push pull control on my car that does both pedals although I use my left foot for the brake rather than the lever .

It is possible but the showrooms will have no idea how to do it .He will need pics etc of exactly what he needs and find somewhere outside to his willing to do it. 

I have seen it been done but no idea where they got it done ..

We actually have one, its removable, was in wifes Lexus in USA, similar to what's been shown but also had a plate over existing gas pedal. She had a major stroke and lost any use of right foot. It's there but doesn't move.  I paid 300 USD for it in 2008. The base is anodized aluminum and stainless steel rod and sub base, 2 piece so it can be easily snapped into place and also removed for normal driving. Afraid to let it go in case I end up needing it. She doesn't drive anymore.  I purchased from Freedom Wheels in Houston TX.  Never heard of such a thing until our medical issues happened.  This was extremely safe and state approved.  It was a factory made item not a custom built piece.
