  • Vietnam war ended in 1975, age of conscription started at 18 .... so boomers were involved in the war.

That's a lot of ignorance talking. Boomer generation invented the transistor, the mobile phone, color TV, the Internet etc....

Just to mention a few things that later gens take for granted.

No you didn’t.

So I'm a baby boomer.  That and the rest are some silly A$$ labels.  Mean absolutely nothing.  Opportunities are always there.  As are excuses for being a LPOS.  The choice is UP2U.

We diden't have to fight in any disastrous wars like generations before us had to. And we live longer than our grandparents.

How did you manage to miss Vietnam?

You're right, I didn't. But a boomer invented the Blue LED, which is instrumental in all modern display panels.

December 23, 1947

The transistor was successfully demonstrated on December 23, 1947 at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Bell Labs is the research arm of American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T). The three individuals credited with the invention of the transistor were William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain.

The "boomers" were too young for the Korean/Vietnamese war.

Dude - screw your head on straight.  I was Vietnam War cannon fodder on my 18th birthday.  The Vietnam war didn't end until April 30, 1975.
The boomer era spanned 1946 through 1964. US kids were being drafted big time after the Gulf of Tonkin fiasco in the summer of 1964.  By 1965 the US were drafting US 18 - 26 year old US guys with abandon.  Those born in 1946 were all turning 18 in 1964 and were eligible to be drafted. And that war went on for 10 freaking years!  I lost a lot of friends.

"Swissie."  Not American are you?  You really don't have a clue.  Don't you dare discount that war as something trivial.  :glare:

Never mind when the "boomer generation" exactly started. We had 80 years of peace and a certain amount of prosperity for most. 80 years of this constellation is very rare in history.

Since recorded European history, only in some 300 years Europe was totally free of any wars. Cumulatively.

Historically, we have lived in a rare "peace bubble", combined with incresing prosperity for most.

That is the essence of this thread. I personally am grateful that I was born at the right time at the right place.

Ever serve in the military, or were you a coward?  I'm guessing the latter.
Enjoy wallowing in your self-sanctimonious drivel. I've no time for fools like you.

I think compared to Gen Z we were strong, we grew up playing outdoors, we had the great fortune of growing up without having a device anatomically attached to our hands, and we were fortunate enough to grow up knowing the value of thick skin and perseverance.

I don't see much of that these days. I consider the current crop to be the snowflake generation.

The draft ended in 1973 and I graduated in 1974, so I was lucky. Turned 18 in 1974. After seeing what went on there and how good soldiers died in many ways, I thought I was lucky to miss it.

Wrong!  Boomers in vented the transistor.  Boomers invented lasers.  In fact, boomers invented a hell of a lot of things 🙂  (Just as other generations did).

Hello fellow "boomers". I think it's time for us to realise in what "golden age" most of us lived. An age where most "little people" were able to improve their financial standing. With the outlook of a financially secure old age. We diden't have to fight in any disastrous wars like generations before us had to. And we live longer than our grandparents.

We should be thankful.

The "new age" that is now dawning is more than worriesome. Generations can handle 1 or 2 major problems. But the multitude of problems at our doorstep will likely surpass the capability of humans to handle the multitude of major problems all at the same time.

I myself find being an old man is not that great. But at least I have some sort of "solace". Hopefully, I will have passed the "pearly gates" before king Chaos will reighn the world once more.

So, fellow boomers, thankfullness and gratefullness is in order. We were truly born into a historical "window of opportunity" that is rare in history.

Transistor was invented in 1947.

So are you claiming a three year old Boomer invented it?

Nah,  the man who invented the laser was born in 1927

the mobile phone

Er no.

Martin Cooper (born December 26, 1928, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.) is an American engineer who led the team that in 1972–73 built the first mobile cell phone and made the first cell phone call.

color TV

Nup

Guillermo González Camarena (17 February 1917 – 18 April 1965) was a Mexican electrical engineer who made a color-wheel type of color television.

The year I graduated high school, unemployment was 8%, interest rate was 10% and minimum wage was $2.10.
