Looks more like questionable building standards, rather than the power of the earthquake

Well no, the earthquake was a factor , but the building should have been built to withstand the earthquake .    Was the concrete below given  enough time to cure before the upper part of the buil

Nope... but I dont reckon they are laying under the rubble eating ham sandwiches and drinking beers.

It is rather inappropriate to give R.I.P statements before deaths have even been reported . You post announced  that 40 people had died when they are still probably fighting for their lives

Yahoo news says 3 dead, 90 missing

Powerful earthquakes can make many buildings unsafe even if they remain intact after the first tremor. Evacuation is essential until the buildings can be inspected. I'm pretty sure if you were on the 20th or 30th floor of a highrise, you'd be out on the street, too. There's also a risk of aftershocks, which can collapse buildings weakened from the initial quake. As of 25 minutes ago, there were reports of 169 buildings damaged.

RIP, crane operator.

Yes, a much more believable figure. The building turned to dust, so most people were crushed, although they wanted to keep people's hopes alive.

I suspect a large number of illegal, undocumented workers will be lost in that rubble, so the true figure might never be known.

Wow good screen cap...it looks like he was using something like

(in lieu of ) a parachute...perhaps a miracle happened ?

In practice what does a state of emergency mean.?

I did not think that that phrase would need to be explained but here goes;

"There is a life threatening emergency situation in Bangkok and all help should be given immediately by all departments!"

I too was thinking the building collapse looked very much like the 3 towers on 9/11.

HARP ??

The conspiracy loons will be out tomorrow claiming it was a planned detonation.

Normally much faster help by manpower and Finance Resources. Many Countries have Budgets for this and Man Power organizations for this, like in Germany the "THW Technisches Hilfswerk." To mobilize them a State of Emergency to be declared.

Enough of your inappropriate comments Nick.

I'm expecting at least 90 victims in that building collapse. Don't take it personally, but that's how many are missing so far. You might have missed it, but the building disintegrated. It turned to dust.

Yes, I had one person claim that already. I asked if they were waiting for the earthquake to set off the charges.

They timed it well, considering this was the first destructive earthquake in the 2 centuries of Bangkok's history, and in the 200 years, just over 20 earthquakes.

Strong aftershocks are common after fault slip quakes.

I would guess, a good number of the high rises in Bangkok could have structural damage (so far I heard of 200 calls about damaged buildings in Bangkok, so I guess thousands is more likely).

If having a choice, I would not stay in one for a few days, to be sure.

Shoddy building work in not giving the concrete long enough to fully dry ?

Don't forget Bangkok is built on swamp land (or near-swamp-like soil) with a very shallow ground water table and bedrock very deep (too deep).  I've heard from a friend that the engineers just guess how deep they should drive the foundations of highrise buildings (using some kind of formula height versus depth of foundations). Let's hope there is never a big earthquake actually near Bangkok to test their hypotheses.

Has Bangkok or Thailand asked for internationally trained experts to help find survivors in the rubble? There are countries well known with experts for this kind of work. From the local rescue effort I've seen so far, they just seem to be standing around..

Several countries already have started sending teams, in the case of Myanmar it is India, I heard the EU also has offered direct and indirect help to both affected countries:

Europe’s Copernicus satellites are already helping first responders. We are ready to provide more support.

From the speed with which the Bangkok governor enacted a State of Emergency, I assume that some kind of pre-planned emergency planning and response is currently acted upon. But of course, if you have a skyscraper-size heap of rubble in fornt of oyu with people somewhere in it, there is not all that much that can be done without heavy machinery.

No it's fact if you watch the video closely. Doh.

Answering to myself 🙂

There is a heavy crane now set up at the site of the building collapse and rubble is being moved. But I guess I need to echo posters before me, chances for even a minor positive outcome are very slim.
