Ordinary Thai domestic houses are mostly built with cheat building blocks and only a single wall . No double walls with a cavity . They will have little resistance to any earthquake .

 The high rise that collapsed looked to me , when I first saw the video , that it was built above a sink hole because it dropped vertically . Then I saw the support pillars which to me looked to be too small and certainly not earthquake resistant .

Bit disorganised and I'd say not many evacuation drills had been carried out.

Because our leaders are clueless and have been caught unprepared - proof? Witness the recovery crew at the site of the collapsed buildng in Chatuchak - aimless, confused and leaderless. A leader with a whistle giving commands which become  compellingly assertive by means of the incessant use of said whistle is all that is needed to invigorate the heroic response which the occasion demands.

Roof top pools act as a Tuned Liquid Damper often used in tall buildings to mitigate the effects of wind or seismic activity.

This one which collapsed in BKK was not completed and I'd hazard a guess that the support walls and even the main columns were not yet fully cured on the upper levels.
Without the walls it could cave like a house of cards. But hey, you just go on with your Thai bashing.

GF did not get home until midnight from victory.  The real test of buldings is us.

 

With all the EXPATS living in big buldings we should be able to get an idea of what it is like with damage

I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand which was 600 miles from the epicenter. Bangkok was 870 miles away. My house shook violently and swayed dramatically as my car rocked back and forth in the carport. After going through many tremors and quakes on the Adak, Alaska in the Aleutian chain where our island was surrounded by 3 active volcanos, this one actually scared me. I knew it had to have been at least a 7. Luckily nothing cracked and the house held up well although my pool looked like an angry sea! 😱

But that was a 7.4, they "upgraded it in 2021..........probably like air pollution raised the limit to whats "safe" Theres a big difference between 7and 7.4

 

In 2007, the capital was designated as earthquake-prone and legislation stipulated that new buildings 15 metres or higher must be built to withstand a 7.0-magnitude quake.

the collapsed building was being done by the govt using a chinese construction company with chinese materials, explains a lot.

Except that those were build to withstand such possible things X5-10 yet still collapsed in such manner.. Well you know where I am heading but let's stay on topic. The visuals were indeed almost identical as the one we had here yesterday, a real collapse.

 

Hence every other building in BKK is still standing as well.

Now it will be hard to sell a condo in Bangkok.

Anyone live on the blue line below at Pohan Yotin to Sukhumvit? Any damaged stations? I use many of these stations. I understand MRT and BTS running now, but yellow and pink maybe not. Thank you 🙏

I thought it was quite funny until my ultrawide monitor started rocking that hard it almost fell on the floor. Is like you are shaking your own desk with 2 hands on purpose using quite some force.

 

The funniest part was all thais outside looking up in the sky, maybe the alien mothership arrived.

You are aware that tunnels are like one of the safest places for earthquakes right?

Agreed. I had always said the right place, the right price. 25 years wife could live rent free after my death. Between taxes, transfer hassles, price, general build quality and now potential structural damage. No way.

true, but in emergencies a work permit should be waived.

I understand that concrete takes up to 28 days to gain full strength, so if adding floors to quickly then the concrete is not strong enough to support above floors. Usual cost cutting and shody workmanship by engineers, Was this a Chinese construction company. Typical dodgy practises

I asked about the stations and yes, they too are underground. There are long escalators in all. I don't fancy walking 200 steps just to go to Big C or whatever thanks

I'd be more worried about the actual escalator plates, last time I walked in don muang (where someone lost her foot) those plates still felt loose as fk. Just take the stairs.
