Songkran is the part of Thai culture and their life.

Has been here for centuries.

If they didn't like it, it must have gone by now.

But it is still here as they love it.

 

And also in terms of economic effects, it is the huge generator of revenue(both in domestic and tourism markets).

According to the statistics, Thailand earned B140335 baht last year during this festive season alone.

I have not seen any bars or restaurants along Beach Road, where most of the water fight is closed. Hell they are the ones charging 20-100  baht for water. 

 

Some have restrictions on what you can bring into the restaurant or bar.

 

Bangkok is the same thing a lot of the bars are open earlier so that they can make the money off of the tourrists.

Yes,  a well known bar owner suggested he takes a months money in a few days during Songkran.  But there is quite a list of other businesses (like restaurants) who just decide to close down as it is impossible to do their business.  For me, a PIA.....

Last Songkran I was riding my motorbike down a street in Luang Prabang (Laos), loaded up with shopping.  I spotted a fat kid with a large water gun who was waiting alone by the side of the road to hit me full blast.  Damn, I didn't want my shopping to get wet.  What to do?

 

As I approached him, he levelled his water gun.  I showed alarm on my face and looking past him I shouted loudly in Lao "Look out!  An elephant!!"  (Elephants walking down the road in LP are a common sight).

 

The boy spun around to look behind him for the errant elephant, giving me a vital 2 seconds to safely pass 🙂

 

This year I'm in Jomtien.  I have got some beer/food in and I'll only venture out after dark.  I suspect that revellers might be in for a shock if they soak some of the large, unsmiling Russian men with their wives and kids....

They buy rancid water at exorbitant prices; they may have to pay medical bills for eye/ear infections; they do not frequent restaurants to eat in wet clothes; they may well need a new phone/camera.
