Iran orders closure of Strait of Hormuz — putting one-fifth of world’s oil supply at risk

Featured Replies

Iran’s parliament has voted to close the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping channel through which around 20% of the world’s daily oil flows.

The move, which could block $1 billion in oil shipments per day, is likely to send oil prices soaring.

It will come into effect pending a final decision by Iran’s Supreme Council.

If anything good comes out of President Trump's mistake, it will be the end of the American people's support of Israel.

The outbound and inbound lanes of HS belongs to UAE. Iran's territorial waters are just north of the inbound lane. How can the Iranians just close the Strait?

I think you'll find it's Oman but the fact remains Iran can't close the Straight of Hormuz.

Chat away, as your fake freedom becomes even more fake.

Fear, uncertainty, deflection.... the poor never understand the game until it's too late, and it doesn't matter, there's nothing they can do about it anyhow.

soon the poor will fight the poor.

Iranian airspace might belong to Iran but it's now totally controlled by Israel. As for "just fly in and bomb them?" that's easy. Take out a threat of nuclear weapons which would threaten the US, US personnel and interests, and the defence of an ally, Israel. What do you imagine would happen. The US contacts Iran to ask if they can come into their airspace so they can bomb their nuclear enrichment facilities?

@EVENKEEL seemed to be saying Iran can't do dat, it's against international law.

You know, like bombing some country you're not at war with.

You're right, it's Oman or so the map shows.

Iran has no power no creditably, no allies to come to the rescue and no lifeline, let’s sit back watch and see how this plays out.

Easy, the same way there were numerous bombing raids in Yemen last year with the Biden admin, the UK and supported by numerous other countries

Thanks, I think I'm getting a handle on this "rules-based international order" thingie.

Guess it's okay under international law for China to bomb the Philippines or Australia if they get the urge......If supported by other countries.........Russia or North Korea or what's left of Iran.

International law is fun.

They don't have to actually close the straits, they just need to one tanker with a drone or missile and shipping insurance will become prohibitively expensive.

Sure, but that would be illegal under international law.

We're all about law and order.

They can do alot of things to disrupt. The use of remote control speedboats laden with explosives has long been a security issue in the Gulf.

Ridiculous comment. Trump took action to take out the ability of the worst fundamentalist Islamic nation on earth from producing nukes. Your analogy of China bombing Australia is infantile.

Some people watch, some people make the big money.  Remember when Oil futures hit zero (negative carry at one time)?????  FREE money, people. I don't get paid to chat.  lol

But, but Xi wanted to bomb Australia.

The rules say if Xi has more ships and planes he can do it.

He claimed he had to remove the threat, even though his intelligence services reported there was no threat.

He really, really.....bigly.........wanted to do it.

That makes it okay.

Sure they can, but now they are not their proxies, they are the target and will get the snot stomped out of them rather quickly. This game is no Biden/Obama dance of oh-hum ambiguities anymore.

More scaremongering. Did you think the administration had not expected this and made plans to keep it open? Take a look at the map. Iran doesn't own the Straits. Do you think the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait will stand by and let Iran control their oil trade?

Does Trump have a pen and a phone?

He has a Sharpie, indispensable for unilaterally renaming international bodies of water and diverting hurricanes.

Phones, more of a problem. Trump phones (gold don't you know) are not due to be available for a couple of months ( takes time to ship them from China of course) and no-one knows what the "coverage will be like). Should be good, as the cost $45.47 is almost twice that of competitors, and all the data will be kept "onshore"!

Stop making things up. How old are you. Why Trump went in is perfectly clear. Iran has/had uranium enriched to 60% hidden deep under a mountain and are/were making thousands of rockets. 60% is way more than what's needed for domestic nuclear energy production and can easily and quickly be further enriched to a weapons grade 90%. As I stated Trump has denied the worst fundamentalist Islamic regime on the planet from producing nukes. You're response to this is some ridiculous hypothetical scenario about China bombing Australia.
