A heated debate emerged in Thailand after political activist Mongkolkit Suksintharanon proposed a controversial initiative to combat rising HIV rates. He suggested a legal ban on sexual activity for those under 22 years old, sparking a nationwide discussion.

During a recent parliamentary session, Deputy Minister of Public Health Chaichana Daecho highlighted the troubling increase in HIV infections among the youth. Determined to address the issue, the ministry plans to reduce new HIV cases to fewer than 1,000 per year and related deaths to under 4,000 annually. The strategy involves educational efforts targeting university students and distributing free condoms to promote safe sex practices.

On July 8, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin marked the initiative's launch by handing out 3,000 condoms at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. Despite these efforts, Mongkolkit, an advisor within the Democrat Party, expressed his dissent on Facebook. He critiqued the ministry's approach as merely treating the symptoms rather than addressing the root causes.

He suggested an alternative: a law barring sexual activities for those under 22, claiming the idea stemmed from a conversation with his daughter. Mongkolkit argued that such a measure would protect youths from HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, academic distractions, and unplanned pregnancies. He also proposed penalties such as university suspensions or expulsions for violators.

His post ignited significant backlash online. Many Thai netizens criticised the proposal, questioning its practicality and pointing out potential infringements on personal freedoms. Some even challenged Mongkolkit's own history, asking about his first sexual encounter. Mongkolkit candidly admitted to being 16 at the time, a revelation that only fuelled further scepticism about his proposition.

As the debate rages on, it highlights the complexities of addressing public health issues like HIV. While the government focuses on preventative measures, discussions on how best to tackle the problem continue to evolve. With varying opinions and suggestions emerging, the challenge remains to find a balanced approach that respects individual rights while effectively combating the spread of HIV.

This dialogue underscores the importance of both education and healthy, informed discussions in developing strategies that are both effective and socially acceptable.

Seriously!!!!

What a great idea for a nation with a reproduction rate far short of what's required to maintain it's population.

Give them all the PrEP injections instead and provide comfortable bedding to fight the existential threat.

And what would that achieve, bar fostering criminality (it would not stop randy teens doing what’s normal) while also keeping HIV rates high! It is all about education.

What have you been smoking? Good luck with that idea.

Trying to keep it below 12 is hard enough. Maybe someone can tell him that kids are not under 24-hour surveillance.

How about working on the culture that leads men to not care a bit about a female partner, whether she gets pregnant, or ends up with any sickness, as this culture allows men to, again, remain totally irresponsible about their acts...

Good luck with that!

"they"  push for everyone to be under 24 hour surveillance to keep the kids safe...remember

"if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about"

so who could possibly object to it ?

Welcome to the digital + (analogue) panopticon.

First they should try and prohibit sex for 13 year olds…

For various "reasons"   most developed countries are not producing enough offspring to maintain population levels.. the trend increased during the last few years...some say "nothing to see here"

And if child support is enforced, it might make them think twice about not using protection.

After seeing how they manipulated the number of "Covid infections" by fooling with the tests, I'm skeptical of this supposed outbreak which just so happens to lead to a lifetime taking profitable pharma drug.

Why am I not surprised about such proposals in a country where they stop alcohol sales in the middle of the day, and jump through hoops like apps, ID checks, and QR codes, just to stop foreigners using flat-rate train fares...

I heard that HIV rates are up for people under 30... Best to make it a law that people under 30 cannot have sex, cannot buy condoms, and, while we're at it, stop all sex education! Enforcement can't be that hard; after all the country managed so far to "have no prostitution"...

😆😂

Grew up in Pattaya.  Virgin still.

I also propose banning sex for those over 70.

From 23 to 41, only happy endings.

42 to 52, only if married for 11 years and passed 29 state exams.

This law has already passed and Thailand has yet to have any visitors under 22.   interesting.

I can see it now............boy-child and girl-child, both 13, ride their unregistered scooter, without a license, without helmets, after midnight, to a secluded ricefield where they smoke some some weed and drink some of daddy's liquor, but when girl-child starts to get frisky, boy-child steps back, utterly shocked, and says....

"sister, how can you behave suchwise?  knowest thou not that intercourse of the sexual nature is banned for younglings such as ourselves?  we must remain chaste until our twentie-twosies, lest we bring shame upon the hub of morality!"

"i see, brother.  i was grievously wrong, please forgive my unforgivable infraction.  let us play chess. and give me one'a dem yaba pills."

"now you're talkin'!"

From a guy who couldn't get laid before he was 16!

Anybody remember the Condom King, Mechai Viravaidya?

Ridiculous proposal which people will not follow but not really a bad idea if you think of all the unwanted pregnancies it would stop, along with transmission of STD's, allowing the brain to develop more so they can make better decisions about who is allowed to have their bodies.

Anyone who has a daughter would like to see them wait as long as possible, instead of allowing a plethora of petulant losers who's only goal is their own orgasm into their child's body, with 95% or more never sticking around if there's that unwanted pregnancy, and not contributing a baht towards the care of that child either.

Problem is, it's impossible to enforce, as there's only a few things a boy thinks about when he reaches puberty. Drinking, drugs, sex and video games.
