Plenty of plonk in Italy too, along with some amazing wines. For every award winner, there are some losers as well, many get exported to uneducated consumers in Asia.

  • The headline is slightly misleading. It's only some goods. Apart from this it's not just tariffs that make imported goods so expensive here. Excise tax and import duties really push up the prices.

  • Who wants to drink US swill? Even in Europe they give it a miss

  • This was proposed already. It's not good enough .   First, it will not be honored. Second, the surplus is so imbalanced it's said general goods will do nothing regarding trade imbalance.

Good wines come from Europe: France, Spain, and Italy.

Australian, South African, Chilean, Californian, Argentinian, etc. wines are cheap copies that don't hold a candle to them.

Any low-priced European wine is better than 90% of the copies from the rest of the world.

I wish the European Union would also impose tariffs on Thailand, so we can drink quality wines here at reasonable prices.

If anyone is going to vote against me, I only ask that before doing so, they try a good bottle of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Bordeaux, Montepulciano, etc., and compare it to the best bottle of Australian or South African wine they've ever had. 😉

Import duties are tariffs, so these would be reduced to 0 percent. However, VAT would still apply to all goods, and excise taxes would continue on items like alcohol, tobacco, sugary drinks, and luxury goods such as cars, boats, cosmetics, watches, jewelry, and luxury bags.

Keep the tax on tilapia. There's an abundant local supply of this awful fish in Thailand without

importing US khrap.

Still it is better than that horrible dory that seems to be everywhere. I'll take Plah Nin (Nile) anyday over dory.

You obviously have no idea and you obviously have never had the pleasure of drinking a South Australian shiraz. Here's a short list of some "cheap copies" from down under (in Australian $).

1. Penfolds Bin 180 Cabernet Shiraz: Priced around $1,000+ per bottle.

2. Penfolds Grange Shiraz: retail around $700–$900 per bottle.

3. Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz: A current release of Hill of Grace often costs around $700–$800 per bottle,

4. Torbreck The Laird Shiraz: commonly $500–$800 per bottle.

5. Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir: recent vintages often hovering around $800–$1,000 per bottle.

These are of course the high end of the market. Very, very good wines can also be found at the other end.

South Australian red wine selling for $22 wins top nod at prestigious international award

A $22 bottle of red wine from McLaren Vale in South Australia has won the highest accolade at the prestigious 2024 Decanter World Wine awards in London.

Shingleback’s 2022 Red Knot Classified GSM – a blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre – was one of 50 wines from around the world to be awarded the coveted best in show on Wednesday.

France swept the awards, winning 12 best in show medals. Australia came runner-up, winning eight of the best in show awards, followed by Spain with seven medals.

TH does have a wild card to play, no longer letting US military to use it's base.  Might affect the foreign aid TH receives from USA, to the tune of $66 billion in ODA in 2023.

TH did purchase 12 Saab Gripen E and F fighter jets, instead of more US jets, to eventually replace their aging F16s.

A good friend from Australia had an ongoing debate in China for years. Australia vs US. We never really declared a winner but we drank a lot of great wine. We were not snobby about it though, as we drank a lot of great wine from Italy, Spain and South America as well. The French did not fare so well because they were shipping the trash to China. There are big award winners from everywhere, the only problem is finding them and paying for them.

I am wondering if  zero tariffs on imports of US food waste will lower the cost of street stall meat balls ? Or is the presumption that those imports are fed into animal feed product is true?

You can bet there will be zero tariffs on Trump© wine to wash down your Trump© steak when visiting your local Trump-TACO© stand and paying by Trumpscan© on your Trumpmobile© MAGAphone©.

Right hand drive models for countries that drive on the left hand side.  Bit like left hand drive Rollers, Jags etc. which are right hand drives being made into left hand drives for the US. How on earth do you not know this.

YES!! Crunchy is the ticket for me along with Strawberry and Blueberry Jam.

This action by Thailand is long overdue. US expats pay ridiculous prices for goods made in the United States.

$456-$650 USD is what you call "2 buck Chuck"? As for the AUS$22 red that won the prize I guess your knowledge of wine is much better than the judges that awarded the prize.

Well it would not hurt to try something innovative and different than the highly protectionist structure Thailand has today. There is the opportunity that Thailand could boost exports from where they are today at the expense of their competitors if the US only charged Thai goods the basic 10% tariff. It’s not like the imported US products compete with locally made Thai products. If after trying it, and finding it does not work the obvious option is to gradually and selectively restore some duties/taxes/tariffs. Trump is not going to be around for ever.

Thailand has learned from China, make a deal then ignore it. The US at this point will see right through this. Bye bye Thailand.  Good ridden.

Two buck Chuck is Charles Shaw wines, only sold at Trader Joe's in the US.  Initially sold for $1.99 per bottle.  Has garnered several awards in the wine world.  Look it up 😉

Ok. Thanks. I take back my previous comment. Apologies. Yep there are good wines outside of France, Spain and Italy and to say otherwise is clearly wrong. Thanks for the educating me.

"... Sure enough, Charles Shaw, the winery most wine snobs love to hate, has won the top prize in judging at the 2007 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, beating out hundreds of other wines, all of them likely costing more than $1.99 a bottle at Trader Joe’s.

In its story July 12, ABC News led off by saying “Connoisseurs may cringe, the snobs may even sob, but the judges have spoken: California’s best chardonnay costs less than $3.”

Judged at the state fair competition were 3,029 California wines from 640 wineries. Sixty-four judges conducted the tastings over two weekends ... ."

AI Overview

Mustangs in Thailand are right-hand drive (RHD). While previous generations were exclusively left-hand drive, the sixth-generation Mustang was engineered for both left-hand and right-hand drive markets, including Thailand, which drives on the left side of the road. This means the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle, allowing for safe and comfortable driving in Thailand.

Agree with you on that ,Bud sucks!

Sam Adams Summer is a better choice

when engaging in a Shedfull!

Cheers

I think Zero % is the baseline. Non-negotiable.

And Thailand is going to have to commit to buying way more stuff - like $25 billion more (minimum).

And throw in a few hotels and golf resorts for Eric.

And be careful Thailand, there will be no negotiating that 36 % down, if you whine it'll go up to 50%.
