A disagreement over the price of fruit has left a foreign tourist in hospital with a serious stab wound after an incident in Patong in the early hours of the morning of 8 August.

Police said the altercation occurred at about 02.20, outside Patong Medical Clinic on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road. Officers arrived to find the victim, named as Orxan Hidayet Oglu Orkhan, 33, from Azerbaijan, lying on the pavement with a deep abdominal wound. He was rushed to Patong Hospital for emergency treatment.

The suspect, identified as Pannawit Yongyosying, 25, was found waiting at the scene and reportedly admitted to stabbing the tourist during an argument. According to police, the dispute began after Mr Orkhan ate fruit from a sidecar stall run by Pannawit and his girlfriend and allegedly refused to pay the 60-baht charge.

Pannawit told investigators that a heated verbal exchange followed, which ended with him stabbing the tourist once in the stomach with a knife.

He was taken into custody and transported to Patong Police Station for questioning. Charges are expected to be brought as the investigation continues.

Authorities have yet to release an update on Mr Orkhan’s condition.

This Poor fruit vendor, at wits end, fed up with foreigners doing what foreigners do................ Here, I'll correct that for you----This very disturbed fruit vendor, not understand what restraint and following the law means, took his rage out on someone who made a minor mistake and ate a piece of fruit without paying. This happens every day here in Thailand, mostly with locals but the occasional foreigner will also do something foolish and partake in a minor theft. Instead of reporting him to the police, now he'll be charged with attempted murder and likely spend a couple of years in jail, hoping that when he comes out he's learned not to resort to such violence and instead use the law against such foolish perpetrators.

If you ever decide to visit the tourist regions, be careful, be very bloody careful, I don't want to see you get hurt.

I'd like to give you a heads up, a Warning.

You with your disrespectful, anti Thai attitude you may get yourself hurt visiting these regions.

I like the way Thai's deal with disrespectful foreigners.

I'm not here to argue with you, as some of your posts are okay. Please don't assume what you know about me. I've been a tourist and seen what they're capable of, both here and in other countries.

You don't have to worry about me. Not only can I take very good care of myself but your assumptions that I'm against Thais or any other nationality, creed or race are dead wrong. I get along with everyone, respecting cultures and people, even if some act with total ignorance.

I had a Thai wife who was wrong, but this didn't put me negatively against Thais, as my daughter is half Thai and my girlfriend here for over 4 years is Thai. In fact her family is fine with me and knew their daughter did me wrong. The neighbors that live around me are also okay with me, as I'm helpful to them and vice-versa.

I'm fully aware what some foreigners do here and in other countries. I lived in the US 62 years and didn't stay inside my house. I saw tourists all my life from many countries, and most are respectable. The same here with foreigners, most of whom are taking care of women here and children, and contributing to the economy.

You need to remember that 99% of crime here, and in all other countries, is committed by locals. Ignorant and criminal foreigners visit all countries, and think they can do whatever they want. they act the same back n their countries, and some of the crime here , including human trafficking, involves foreigners, so I'm gain well aware of what goes on. Disrespect by anyone shouldn't be tolerated, but you need to put the blame where it is, individually.

There is a simple moral to this story. No free rides. Always pay for that which you use, or consume. Everyone has to make a living. Assuming otherwise has a price. Basic respect.

"who made a minor mistake and ate a piece of fruit without paying."

Taking something that belongs to another without paying is stealing.

Minor mistake?, hardly, this is something taught in early childhood as far as I know in every culture.

Obviously the vendor over-reacted but stealing from him and then refusing to pay was a major provocation IMHO.

His own choice.

All he had to do was pay up.

There's a few things to learn about Thailand, stealing is taken very seriously, so are many other things, like road rage, giving a Thai the bird etc, you may be SHOT, or cut up in this case, we all know this or should know this.

It's quite simple to survive hear, be bloody respectful.

Thailand is very different from where you come from.

It isn't as much taught as it is some trying to fit in with their peers. Many because they are poor and need to eat. Stealing is stealing, and much of the biggest thefts involve white collar criminals. This was a stupid crime, a misdemeanor, but still wrong. Some do this as a dare, which again, is still wrong, as the poor need all the money they can get, especially in a country like Thailand. I'm sure they had enough money to pay but arrogance had them thinking they could do it and get away with it. The vendor was 100% wrong in what he did, although it might have taught the perp a lesson. Then again, maybe not. Stealing a piece of fruit is still a minor offense, looking at all that happens just here daily to compare it to.

Many times I have tried the fruit before buying and it was always with the sellers consent, bit different I know. Thai's taste a lot of the fruits before they buy.
