In a surprising twist, Time Out magazine has crowned Bangkok as the top city for Generation Z in its annual “Best Cities in the World” ranking for 2025. This decision places the Thai capital ahead of renowned metropolises like Melbourne, Cape Town, and New York City, reflecting its broad appeal to younger generations.

Gathering insights from over 18,500 city-dwellers worldwide, the survey interestingly highlighted Cape Town, South Africa, as the overall winner. However, a closer look at responses from those under 30—Gen Z and younger millennials—revealed Bangkok’s unparalleled allure.

Time Out credits Bangkok's unique blend of qualities that resonate deeply with the younger crowd:

  • Happiness: The city is noted for its friendly and content populace, creating a welcoming environment for newcomers.
  • Affordability: With a lower cost of living than many Western cities, Bangkok allows young people to enjoy life without financial pressure. To put this into perspective, a night out might cost as little as 1,000 Thai Baht, which appeals to budget-conscious Gen Zs.
  • Diversity: From its majestic temples and bustling markets to a vibrant nightlife, Bangkok offers a rich tapestry of cultural experiences.

Respondents highlighted the city’s hospitable atmosphere, making it easy to forge new friendships and find one's niche in such an eclectic environment.

Other Top Contenders

Close behind Bangkok in the Gen Z ranking are these standout cities:

  • Melbourne, Australia (2nd): Celebrated for its cultural diversity and vibrant arts scene, with 96% of young respondents valuing its creative offerings.
  • Cape Town, South Africa (3rd): Recognised for its stunning natural beauty and wallet-friendly social activities.
  • New York City, USA (4th): Known for its dynamic and never-ending nightlife, appealing to those seeking constant excitement.
  • Copenhagen, Denmark (5th): Praised as an idyllic spot for dating and achieving a well-balanced lifestyle.

Not just confined to Gen Z, Bangkok is noted worldwide for its dynamic energy. The city seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, offering everything from traditional street food to high-end dining, and cultural festivals to buzzing nightclubs.

It’s this versatility that puts Bangkok at the top of the list for those seeking new experiences. The city’s ability to cater to various tastes and interests allows it to maintain its appeal across different demographics.

As Bangkok clinches the top spot for Generation Z, it sets the stage as a vibrant, affordable, and socially engaging destination. For those under 30, seeking new friendships and experiences in a lively urban setting, Bangkok clearly stands out as a city where happiness thrives and adventures await.

Thus, for young explorers around the world, Bangkok offers a promising potential—not just as a travel destination, but as a place where they can envision forging a future.

I honestly believe living here in Bangkok is what Hell must feel like, moving here was the end of happiness for me.

It's amazing that they found a magazine which needs the money to lift the dirty, polluted, chaotic city higher than Melbourne or Sydney.

Nice Joke 🤣 😂 🤗

Can you get a livable apartment in Melbourne or Sydney for under $200 USD a month?

I would consider spending time in Bangkok unlike the other cities they have listed, but I am not a big city type of person and Bangkok is a very big city.  Excellent transit and very affordable place, but it's not the place for me. Maybe Hua Hin would work for me.

No thanks. Thailand doesn't need them. Broke ass woke losers who think TikTok and YouTube are career choices. Of course there are exceptions and some great people in their generation too, but for the most part the description fits. Actual scenario in a night venue: some **** "friend" will bring his friend over, they'll both drink from your bottle, neither will offer to pay, and to top it off they'll hit on your girls. The younger they are (Gen Z) the more likely they'll do it.

I have to talk the wife and daughter into first, so far, I am losing 2-1.

How ridiculous. Other than teaching English how are genz going to live in Bangkok/ Thailand? Answer - other than free money from heaven they can't.

You see this in the genz tiktokers they rave above silly random finds about the city, profess their neverending love for BKK. A few months later they are out of the country fussing about in X country, clueless, no drive to do any real travel especially hard travel. Craving the soft BKK lifestyle of clubs, burgers and smoothies. Their tiktoks so unimaginative and unadventurous it beggars belief. They rampantly steal ideas from one another despite the original content being lame in the first place.

How can global gonads *live* in any of these places? They've not worked... they've not earned.

Copenhagen? Gotta be a more expensive city on the planet. I'd figure Tallinn instead. Prague. Yet  here again.. .how? No job, no money, no available visa... no one is living anywhere 555

Finally, genz and many others consider living somewhere as existing somewhere - in the moment no less. If you tell me you are living in Thailand I expect you've been here a decade or more to make that claim

Condo and flats are not cheap here. Compare the size of what you are getting. They are less money because you are getting much less living space

Upcountry doesn't count, the land is worthless.

200usd in central BKK will get you a well located flat of 25-28sqm in an all Thai building

Other than the very old, old cities you're not going to even find 22sqm condo or 25sqm flat. Next, add amenities...

One food thing about this kingdom:

Much lower crime risks than other tops.

Not much worry about pettie theft and robbery while on the street.

A narcissistic poll, for a narcissistic tic tok generation
