Social Media Storm as Filmmakers Allegedly Disrespect Thai Flag

A seemingly ordinary day of filming at Phuket's Black Rock Viewpoint has sparked a social media uproar, after a crew was seen rolling up the Thai national flag. The 58-second video, captured at the picturesque location in Rawai, shows a woman from the filming team wrapping the flag around its pole, a move that quickly ignited online backlash.

The clip, first shared on Facebook, rapidly circulated across other platforms. Viewers criticised the team's actions, perceiving it as a sign of disrespect towards the country's revered symbol. The Thai flag, known as the tricolour or Thong Trairong, holds deep significance for many, representing national pride and unity.

One viewer's decisive action turned the tide of the video’s narrative. A man, believed to be a local, intervened by unfurling the flag once again, an act that won widespread acclaim and was widely shared in the digital sphere. Comments praising his sense of respect and patriotism flooded in, contrasting sharply with the criticism aimed at the filming crew.

Responses to the incident varied, with users questioning the crew's nationality and intentions. Some presumed the team might not be Thai, given their perceived disregard for cultural norms, asking, “Is this a Cambodian crew?” Calls for greater awareness and sensitivity from production teams shooting in public spaces grew louder as the conversation developed online.

While the identity of the crew and the purpose of their project remain unclear, the situation has captured the attention of social media users nationwide. Local authorities, have yet to receive any official complaints, but the incident underscores the enduring sensitivity surrounding national symbols in Thailand.

This controversy serves as a reminder of the powerful role that symbols like the national flag play in Thailand, where respect for cultural heritage and traditions remains paramount. Mishandling the flag, whether by accident or design, often provokes strong reactions, illustrating the pride and protective sentiment it inspires amongst Thais.

The incident at Black Rock Viewpoint has not only sparked debate but also reinforced the importance of cultural understanding and respect in diverse settings. As discussions continue online, the event stands as a potent example of how small actions can resonate widely in our interconnected world.

When gets Thailand in the 21st century, instead of keeping this kind of overreacting on things. There is much more world with same or better standards than Thailand, without commenting on everything that does not fit in ancient minds

You haven't been reading the threads with all the American flag worshippers recently then. Or the ones with the Brit flag shaggers. Worse than here, much worse.

But I agree, it is all stupid, it is just a bit of fabric.

It is what it represents that is important. I'm not a flag waver but as a Brit it galls me to see those in ignorance flying the Union Jack upside down. A signal of distress. But looking at my country and its ongoing internal conflict, perhaps it's sending the correct message.

Uh oh... for sure this Op will attract some politician to delve into who these people are and get the police or some other agency to make them pay for their misdeeds so the politician can be seen as a savior to the Thai flag

For all of you who like to click the red thumbs down - this is for you!

Were the film crew going to raise a Cambodian flag instead?

No further comment from me.

Enough with the flag shagging. They are symbols, not magic.

Oh dear; the Flag Wavers and Chest Beaters are out of their Cages again.    I thought they were 'Engaged' already on the Border Issue !

Still trying to comprehend the problem?...  a flag can be furled by either the more commonly seen folding, but can also be rolled...  a lot of it all comes down to whether the flag is affixed to that pole, or once again simply more commonly seen - affixed to a Lanyard

Yesterday in 7-11, a tuktuk driver was in front of me. He bought a Red Bull and two Thai flags. The flags were rolled around a stick and slipped in a plastic wrap.

Maybe the Thai flag maker and the owner of 7-11 are unaware of the prohibition against rolling Thai flags? Is social media abuzz with outrage over 7-11 or its billionaire owner?

No one should ever disprespect a nations flag !

and if it's done on that nations soil..   you deserve all the wrath that their gov can and should unleash on you.

I doubt that the lady who wrapped the flag around the pole understood that what she was doing was disrespectable.

Do you know all of the ins and outs of the rules and etiquette of your national flag?

Can you be sure that when handling you national flag you are not committing a faux pas because of an obscure tradition that was tacked on in the middle ages?
