Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has settled into Klong Prem Central Prison, spending his initial night in calm and composed conditions, according to the Department of Corrections. This follows his transfer from Bangkok Remand Prison after being sentenced by the Supreme Court to a 12-month term.

 

Thaksin, 76, was moved to the central prison in line with the Department of Corrections' protocol that mandates inmates with confirmed convictions be housed separately from those awaiting trial. The move comes after the court deemed his earlier hospital stay instead of serving time as illegal.

 

During his first night, Thaksin was placed in a quarantine ward, where he reportedly slept well and adjusted smoothly. Corrections officials noted that he made no special requests and appeared both physically and emotionally stable. Comprehensive procedures, including health screenings and mental evaluations, affirmed his satisfactory condition.

 

Klong Prem, known for its high security, is one of Thailand’s five top-tier prisons. The facility is strategically located near the Corrections Hospital, ensuring quick medical assistance if required. Given Thaksin’s prominent status, additional security measures have been enacted, and he is monitored by a well-behaved inmate acting as a warden assistant.

 

Upon entry, Thaksin underwent identity verification, health screening, and checks for prohibited items. As part of standard COVID-19 protocols, he is in quarantine for five days before being assigned to a specific zone. Potential placements include areas for elderly or ill inmates, or zones focused on rehabilitation through education.

 

Thaksin’s previous eight-year sentence was reduced to one year through royal clemency. Under current guidelines, he might be eligible for parole after serving six months, with his age potentially allowing for additional considerations.

 

Moreover, the Corrections Department is evaluating a programme under the 2023 Corrections Act for out-of-prison detention using electronic monitoring (EM) devices. Despite Thaksin's eligibility, limited EM resources pose challenges, with the department expecting new budget allocations by 2025.

 

In anticipation of any royal pardon during his imprisonment, Thaksin could see further sentence reductions. Initially classified as a medium-level inmate, he will have opportunities for status upgrades biannually. Given his skills, he may also assist with duties like library services or providing support in medical areas, particularly due to his English proficiency.

 

During his quarantine, which runs from 9th to 13th September, only legal counsel can visit Thaksin. Family visits will commence thereafter, restricted to ten pre-approved individuals. Additionally, inmates may receive up to 15,000 Baht in their prison accounts for personal use, with a daily spending cap of 500 Baht (approximately £11).

 

Thaksin’s lawyer, Winyat Chatmontree, has reportedly not scheduled a visit yet. As the former prime minister navigates his latest circumstances, all eyes remain on how this high-profile detention unfolds.

Not sure how many here have visited Klong Prem, but it is a depressing place. Clean but soulless, inmates have to obey orders instantly. I cannot imagine Thaksin sharing a cell with 20 others on the floor with one shared toilet.

He is behind bars. I dont really care what part of the jail he is in. Why did you say that to me? Do you think he is in a 20 person cell? 76 years old, a former prime minister and one of the richest men in Thailand. Again he is behind bars wearing a blue prison uniform. That is all I know.

Have you been there? I’d love to hear more if you’re able to share. From what I’ve read, it’s one of Thailand’s most notorious prisons, apparently only one foreigner has ever escaped. I imagine Thaksin is in the more comfortable wing where they house army generals and other high-profile inmates.

The powers that be screwed up the management of Tonys last prison stint....

 

The current prison stint seems very fishy....No telling whats going on....

Any where from him not being there.... To at worst a luxury prison cell...

 

Either way he will have his sentence commuted in no time...

I think you are giving Thaksin too much credence. Nobody really cares about this old timer anymore, he's from a bygone era and is old news these days. Yes, money talks in Thailand and yes he will get certain privilege's and is very unlikely to serve the full year, but the fact is he is behind the door and many experts on here and bar stools all around the country said that would never happen as they sipped on their cheap Leo. It's also worth noting that there will be people in power who are pleased he's inside and may do their best to let him fester for as long as poss.

I fully expect him to make a substantial contribution to the department's budget; he will be home before the month is out.

The first 5 nights are in covid quarantine (yes, that appears to still be a thing!)

After that I expect he will get a nice private cell.

When things die down I predict he will be secretly removed from the prison altogether.

I take it that he’s not sleeping in an overcrowded cell with a pee bucket in the middle of the room ! No doubt he has got the comforts of what others can only dream of and I’m not talking just about those in prison  talking about those poor souls who sleep rough throughout the Kingdoms streets
