Thai PM Anutin Reveals 3.9 Billion Baht in Assets

Tied to loans. For example,  there can be a 20 million mortgage from a bank. The lending covenants can require that a bank account be tied to the  mortgage for debt service.   Thailand banks have a weird structure too and don't make it easy to manage a bank account that is located in a city different than where one resides.

I have been with BK for years and no problems, now people having problems, who generated this?

The bank blames visa agents and criminals, these people have been around for years, they wont be bothered.

Anutin declared 1.09 billion baht in cash and deposits spread across more than two dozen bank accounts.

Why does anyone need over 20 bank accounts?

Meanwhile Bangkok Bank continues its war on 'dirty farangs'.

Over the past 20 years I've had nothing but respect, good, polite (respectful) advice and help from BBL.

EG:

Required documentation for each annual " marriage extension" , full repayment of monies fraudulently withdrawn from my account ( no quibbling), help getting money refunded from PEA through MY incorrect online transfers (handled and resolved personally by the branch manager ...very good spoken English and comprehension of the problem), assisting me with new banking App on my new phone, replacement of lost atm cards, adding wife as signatory to my savings account,  quick and easy exchange of some small leftover foreign currency ( no charges) etc etc.

Certainly NOT a " war on dirty farangs"...... in my experience!

He must be a very hard worker.

And brave, as confirmed by his medal rack. A forward roll off the back of a company ready-mix concrete truck clinched the golden wings which are now mysteriously missing from his bling array.

It is his Chinese connections. China has always backed him and his family business and now he is Thai Prime Minister. I guess the Chinese Government may need a few favours down the track.

So this man will never understand what like being hungry, or living in the street, or being frail and sick with nowhere to turn, and oh yeah, pensioners in Thailand receives the princely sum of 1,000 baht a month to live with, a whole 1,000 baht, where Som Tum cost 40-50 baht already.

show us the receipts, who said crime doesn't pay

On the other hand those that have been in the military or civil service all their lives and career. Their wealth needs to be checked and explained

That will never happen.

Oh the poor population. They must be scratching their heads as to why so many politicians, who are far from being smart can amass such large fortunes! The answer is simple because it was gained by illegal methods,

Try several banks as stated in the report. 🙈

The banks all over the world have had issues with money laundering and criminal use. As  criminal methods and strategies change, so too must compliance mechanisms. Banks have been implicated in serious money laundering over the years. For example;

- TD Bank, one of Canada's biggest lenders, had to pay $3bn (£2.3bn) and plead guilty to criminal charges in the US after allowing drug cartels and other criminals to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit funds. Prior to that, Scotia Bank, another Canadian Bank, was reputed to be the Caribbean drug dealer bank of choice.

- USA Goldman Sachs had to pay$5.4 billion to multiple global regulators and another $1.4 billion to Malaysia in restitution for its banking role for the Malaysian caper.

- French BNP Paribas surrendered $8.833 billion and paid a $140 million fines when it was caught money laundering

- Danske Bank’s Estonian branch had its scandal arising from $00 billion of Russian and Azerbaijani transactions that were not reported.

It is not the criminals who cannot be bothered. Rather, it is the financial industry that sometimes does not wish to be bothered and to forgo the profits.

And corruption wealth like this is EXACTLY why protests turned violent in Indonesia and Nepal!

Not sure why you say corruption, he does own a rather large construction firm. It's not as if he started as a single mom in a council flat like some UK politicians.

Mr. GPT says

  • Biggest Thai bank by capital (market cap): Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) — around US $12.4 billion.
  • Largest by asset base: Bangkok Bank

And we all know who owns SCB, don't we?

The quote was of Anutin's words.  Despite your Bangkok eulogy, you will find many farangs squealing about its treatment of their accounts recently.  I recently waited one hour for service whilst FOUR assistants managed to whittle the queue down by one!

Regarding Bangkok Bank, it's been under control of a HiSo Chinese-Thai family since the 1940s. The president is always from the same family and it's the only Thai bank that has a "local bank" presence in China. It has a big presence there and is (I think) the biggest Thai bank by capital in Thailand (could be wrong). So there may be pressure against westerners for some unknown reason coming from a third party, as it seems to be just Bangkok Bank causing trouble. Having said that, the Board of Directors has some well-respected invidual members like Amorn Chandarasomboon who is widely touted as the key drafter of the 1997 Thai Constitution, seen as the most egalitarian so far in the country's history. He's in charge of oversight.

Thanks for this.

Yes, I know of the often dragged out quote of Anutin's....which I think he later retracted, but i certainly don't think this is the  attitude of BBL generally.

There are good and lazy staff in all banks ....and not just in banks!!

The waiting can be longish, sometimes, (but I'm in no great rush), but again, I haven't seen this as exclusive to BBL

Maybe I'm just lucky with pretty good staff at my "home" branch, but at least it's a staffed branch, unlike many countries where they are disappearing all together due to online and mobile banking!

Our ex pm was high up in goldman he was called the smiling assassin

NZ is involved in serious money laundering in various islands including the Cook Islands it's all swept under the carpet

Good book about this is Lawyers Guns and Roses

Australia and NZ put Thailand to shame they are small compared to the corruption down under

I try to avoid the branches (no particular bank, all of them where I have accounts) mid month and the very end/beginning of a month. At that point, just lining up at one of their ATM's can take time as people ahead of me are often paying back monthly loans online or sending family upcountry some remittances. If I avoid those time periods, it's usually not a very long wait to see a teller. I'm retired - I am not in a rush and have time to choose when to go (usually).

Also, I think the inter-banking system at ATMs and on the banking APPs are very good. I can't transfer between banks at an ATM in my home country.

I'm sure the indigenous population will consider themselves forever in your debt once you expose this bombshell to them. I mean who would have thought it?  Politicians profiting from corruption here in Thailand , the land of smiles.   and right under the noses of an unsuspecting electorate who don't have a clue what's going on

No, but when you're a billionaire several time over, your grasps on poverty amount to zero, in days of yore, rulers used

to disguise themself as ordinary person and walk among their people, see and feel the need of the people,

nowdays, well, they still might take the odd trip here and there, but in a limousine and bodyguards.
