Drinking After Hours in Pubs to Cost Up to 10,000 Baht Fine

Featured Replies

Another extortion scheme for 0.1% of the kingdom, mostly targeting foreigners.

Apart from the often senseless price hike in tourism industry without better quality, such a built-in robbery program is behind the travellers arrival downfall here.

In today's  digitalized  world, any ill fame is made known to the  rest of the world  at the  speed  of  light.

I am totally a non-drinker.

And always have strong hate of the stupid and disturbing behaviors  by the intoxicated.

But still, won't thumb up for that sort of proposal of institutionalized robbery.

No problem if the bar owners pay the back handers on time 😀

To the correct officials i mean corrupt  ones 🤑

There's a nice outdoor bar with live music on Soi Excite that goes until 4am.  Thai customers and upscale. Don't think they'll be facing fines.

Exactly, in most countries the establishment would be the one fined and if continuously abusing, their license revoked.

I can see scams arising were bars colaborate with police to be raided when enough customers are in there, it should never be the "CUSTOMERS" responsibility to ensure a bar is open legally, they should at least be forced to display their legal opening hours clearly

So, just to be clear on this.  Bars are allowed to stay open after midnight but are not supposed to sell alcohol after midnight, and if they do then any punter that they sell alcohol to will potentially face a 10000 baht fine if caught drinking in said bar, meaning it's the inebriated punters responsibility to enforce the drinking hours and not the bar.   This is one of those "only in Thailand" type of things isn't it.

I need more weed when I see articles like these.

This country is not smart.

How about they fine the owners of the establishments for staying open and serving people after closing hours?

Drinking After Hours in Pubs to Cost Up to 10,000 Baht Fine.

He he . an other way to make more money.

If not enough they will look for an other Fee/Fine/Tax they can introduce.

This will upset the ex-pat old farts and tourists who sit cemented to a bar stool all night getting hissed!

Why penalise the patron? Surely it’s up to the venue to know when to stop serving and close. Smacks of a dumb UK law years ago that would penalise curb crawlers and not prostitutes because apparently the former instigated the latter. Put the onus on everyone else and not the obvious. Anyway, if they start fining ordinary tourists, it’ll go down like a lead balloon on social. Thailand doing its best to increase Vietnam’s slice of the cake. Silly hours, overpriced ‘beer’, overbearing police.

I don't really believe this will happen, but it's already all over social media, had some friends coming over in December, they are already talking about cancelling

They are alcoholics?

Now that will fan extra zillions into the tourism coffers of the land ......... Tourists are grown people, not as brainwashed as the semi-divine Khon Thai, and might wonder, why the government is telling its own people literally anything what to do and what not to do - just short of giving official hours to see the restrooms

Closing time for venues within entertainment zones in Pattaya was extended to 4am 2yrs ago.

If, as the OP says, sale of alcohol is banned from midnight to 11am, how come they passed a law allowing pubs/clubs/bars to stay open until 3 or 4 a few months ago?

Soft drinks and juice after midnight.

Someone please correct me but what are the bar hours in the UK  and most U.S. states  I do ont think that there are many bars that are open until 4 legally

So how can yousay it is backwards.

As to the 4 am close I know that bars still sell up until 3

in Belgium, France and probably most if not all European countries, there are no mandatory closing time I think as it is not rare to see clubs or bars still open at 6 or 7 am or later ... if there are still customers..

but clubs like Insomnia, Pattaya always and still close a 6:30 am, not 4 am, even a few years ago when they supposed to close at 2 or 2:30 am.. unless the police (from Bkk?) raid the club to make sure they close on time, and all the people who just bought a bottle are pissed of because maybe they will not have time to come again an other night to finish this expensive bottle!

because of regulations concerning after hours drinking? Are they alcoholics?

No, but when they come on holiday they like to live it up a bit, as we all do

They are in an “entertainment” area, not included in these new regulations

Don't blame them.

Awful rules once again by a populace that doesnt know alcohol. What are the fines for Nitrous Gas and magic water? Did Taksin bring this in ? Always trying to up the income from the police .Thats how he bought the elections

As per the story,"patrons drinking in pubs after official closing hours will face fines of up to 10,000 Thai baht".

The Thai Govt. must be absolutely insane on that law where the RTP will take advantage of it and will  only fine farangs who can afford it. At that amount RTP can buy whatever they want after a few busts,

Three reasons why the Govt authority is insane;

1, Your tourists will significantly decrease in numbers if this dumb idea is enforced.

2.  In most western countries they fine the owner not the patrons as it is the owners/managers responsibility to ensure the closure law is regulated for that establishment and not the patrons who have no idea as to what the hours are by local law,

3, The corrupt senior RTP cops are indirectly linked to owning bars and if this law is active and the patrons are only fined this will significantly increase the senior RTP cops own coffers as they will call the lower ranks to make a bust and  pass on a bigger %, of what I call illegal penalties, back to the senior RTP owners of the bar.

Corruption by the RTP at a maximum bull..sh.t law. Only in Thailand,

Which is another reason why I don't live in the UK or US anymore. (though it varies by state - some allow later hours, the boring ones don't)

Drinking made to stop at midnight will last two minutes once the Thai's see a huge drop in their tourist industry, Vietnam is already turning the tide.

Are there never any ending to stupidity in this country?

So, let`s say I will go out from my hotel (wherever it may be) at 22.00 and go

out to have a few beers, I´ll be back again by midnight!?

Close down Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy, ALL of the bars, and go to sleep.

                                      Fun, fun, fun. Not!

There will be a huge decline of tourist, once they get the message. Oh well!

This report refers to non tourist destinations, registered bars, clubs & hotels with a liquor licence in tourist destinations sell from 11am - 2am by law. Typical Thai reporting and how to send the wrong information to prospective tourists that like to party!!!

And they wonder why the tourist numbers are down.

Yes, and even if one travels to Thailand, one thinks twice before going out thanks to those fun killers... More restrictions than in some Muslim countries.

Used to be that I spent more money in Thailand than other countries in the region, but now it's the other way round... 😆
