French Man Brutally Attacked by Thai Bolt Driver in Pattaya

Featured Replies

I strongly suspect that a lot of the (trashy) Europeans who used to go to Benidorm, Fuengirola etc have been attracted to Thailand partly due to it's legalisation of cannabis. Also many of the Brits on the p--s brigade that plague many European cities (including Amsterdam) on stag doos etc.

Do You think he's Avoiding Conscription ??

The Thai driver displayed no etiquette by slowing down or even stopping so the guy can cross the road...I see it every day Thais cross roads at any points darting to get across here  knowing full well Thai drivers show zero politeness in this interaction. It is not a case of right or wrong though don't pedestrians have the right of way here (DMV)?. In reality, Thai drivers believe they always have the right of way regardless of scenario..Has to do with lack of enforcement causing them to believe they are in the right at all times b/c never punished

The assault is another issue...

Farangs come here and think pedestrians should always be yielded to.  Nah, I like it in Thailand where you have to get out of the way.  That’s why you don’t see Thais walking everywhere.  He thought the Thai should obey him and he got knocked the eff out.

In Thailand its customary to 'honk' at pedestrians crossing the road or other road users when say they exit a side road, to let them know you are there!

Maybe its different in France?

It might be customary to honk the horn at pedestrians but not at vehicles, my Thai wife keeps reminding me it’s an act of aggression and Thai drivers take offence.

Very common in Vietnam though as vehicle drivers tend to have their hand permanently on the horn.

I was walking the one day on the dark side of pattaya I was crossing a road in the crosswalk the front car was stopped and the following cars were stopped so I walk in between car 1 and 2. Car 2 decides when they see me to hit the gas and hit me just barely stopping before hitting car 1. It's ridiculous the way thais drive like they see people crossing as targets.

Got knocked down on Suk by a m/bike riding the wrong way.

17 of us on consecutive beds all m/bike related accidents.

Beat that Kev!

And I thought, yep… this is exactly the kind of situation that escalates when both parties act like fools.

All it took was for one person to ignore the provocation, walk off, and carry on with his afternoon - no conflict, no loss of face, just a quiet, bemused attitude, as if to say...  “He’s not even worth my energy".....

.... Smart move - especially impressive given that he was by far the larger of the two. Props to him.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, we see others on this forum glorifying stupidity with lines like, “There will be three hits: me hitting him, him hitting the floor, the ambulance hitting the road” ....  It’s a stark reminder of how absurdly idiotic, moronic, and downright delusional and foolish some people can be sometimes...

Excellent post. Back in the UK, if I was in an argument with someone I did not know I would just walk away, but if he threatened me with any kind of violence, then yes, I would hit him. A real hardman, which I am not, would not threaten anyone with violence and would only use it in self defense.

Idiot French Pedestrian escalates the situation by hitting the car twice.

Impatient and idiotic Thai driver escalates the situation further by physically attacking the French idiot.

In short, what we have here folks is two idiots coming into contact with each other and nether being able to behave properly.

One idiot resorted to violence causing a serious head wound, which puts him in the wrong.

Police emphasize the importance of using designated pedestrian crossings to prevent such disputes.

Is that a joke?

Red and white lines a waste of space, drivers don’t take any notice of them probably because they don’t know the purpose of them even the ones controlled by lights.

Unfortunately, in France you can cross the road anywhere and you have priority over vehicles. But anyway, Nikolai is not a French name

  • Drive on the right: about 165 countries and territories

  • Drive on the left: about 75 countries and territories

🌍 Key facts:

  • Left-hand traffic: mostly Commonwealth countries (United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, etc.), as well as Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Cyprus, Malta…

  • Right-hand traffic: the majority of continental Europe, the Americas, China, Russia, the Middle East, etc.

In terms of population, around 65% of the world drives on the right and 35% on the left.

Well, in Europe it suffices to put one foot onto the road and cars are - by law - forced to slow down or even stop.

Culture shock - and if you throw for good measure a French into the equation with linguistic skills of an arrogant deaf frog ....... et voilà!

Not sure he's French. His passport maybe

Car drivers regard pedestrians as poor people ( low lifes ) who should not get in the way of their betters . I remember crossing a driveway in Udon . When I was half across , a car turned in and had to stop because I was in the way . The driver was as mad as hell .

That is a good one mate.

In the USA and i think most western nations, pedestrians have the right of way and motorists always slow down or yield to them...  so when they travel to Thailand they think its the same... Living in Bangkok I always see westerners getting angry when a car cuts in front of them when they try to cross the street or gets to close.. its kind of amusing in my opinion. In Thailand the logic is if you get hit by a car it's your own frickin fault for getting in the way of a car.

pedestrians are responsible for their own safety in Thailand

Although the article rightfully states that the Frenchman had the right-of-way on the zebra crossing, if an oncoming car honks at you or flashes its lights, it's best to stop, back up, and let it pass. And, of course, this should be done without slapping the car as it goes by. That's what I would do, anyway,,,

They do not have zebra crossings in Pattaya...... and even if the lights give a right of way, best to carry a brick to reinforce it.  Don't slap their car, they take it personally.

Nikolai the "French National" should be used to cars honking horns - the Frogs invented it. Not so much in the former USSR but.

Then the French exported the practice to Vietnam, where the prescribed steering wheel grip is right hand at 2 o'clock, left hand poised over the centre column.  If they don't beep the horn at least once every five seconds, it's considered to be extremely poor driver behaviour. :coffee1:

When I was in Vietnam during the conflict, I used to say, three things work on the Lambretta's, the steering wheel, the horn, and the gas pedal.   No brakes, no lights.

The driver punched Nikolai in the face, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness upon hitting the ground. The driver then fled toward Phra Tamnak Mountain in his white Honda HR-V SUV.

Another hit and run ...... Thai specialty.

But I do wonder, hit with an iron bar, or hit the road .... to cause such a serious injury.

This guy is a visitor in this country, he breaks the law by not crossing at a designated crosswalk, and when the local simply warns him with a beep, he decides to pick a fight, even though he was in the wrong, in the first place?

Mind-boggling!

That said, it looks like a 55 year old hitting the pavement with his head is going to be a serious injury at the very least, so I think that driver is in serious trouble for throwing a punch.

There's no legal requirement in Thailand to use a 'crosswalk'

And those that confidently stride out on 'crosswalks' are often taught a painful lesson.

Thailand: Land where Farangs get their heads bashed in. Only place in Southeast Asia where this is a daily occurrance, never happens in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore. Special to Thailand

I have used Bolt taxis regularly since they started. I've never any complaints as their taxis are immaculately clean, the drivers present well and most time they arrive at the designated time.
