so now looking at Vietnam

Unmarried..... female friends must leave your room before dark.

I met this beautiful Vietnamese chick at the four floors, Singapore, when I was living there. We spent a lot of time together.

When I was working Vung Tau she used to visit me in my hotel room, afternoons before crew change.

I'm not sure about now, law was back then she had to leave my hotel room before dark.

Da Nang is a great place to base one's self for an extended holiday. And yes most things are cheaper - taxis (they have GRAB), food, drinks. Nice beach. Likely cheaper to rent a place on the 'city side' rather than the 'beach side'. But as a city, it doesn't really offer much as far as I could tell, but I was just a tourist. Only a couple of shopping centers, though I think that will change. Korean corporations seem to be the main foreign entities. In general, the people speak English better than Thailand, where only hi-so people, bar girls and those in the tourist industry can speak English (at a conversational level). Also, speaking of hi-so, and maybe because it's still a communist country, there is less snobbishness among the Vietnamese locals - who are pretty straightforward. Not so sure about living in Da Nang long-term. Hanoi or HCMC are probably better alternatives - hospitals, shopping, day-to-day things/amenities.

Without any viable long term or multiple entry visa regimen, all this reeks of impermanence.

Four Floors? Vietnamese hookers? That's a long, long, long time ago then. They've even been disappeared from Jalan P Ramlee in KL.

Yes, I was living Redwood apartments in Singapore around 2004.

So the Vietnamese chicks no longer working there, sad.

Who's working there now, have the ladyboy's over taken the joint?

I was in Hanoi about 7 years back in November. Cool weather. In general I thought the people seemed rather intense.

yeah I didn't like the people in Hanoi so much. Only was there a few days but they felt a little agro compared to Thais. I think the south is better from what I've heard. Sapa was cool but the pushing and shoving was pretty damn annoying.

oh god this. The honking was really terrible. If you lived next to a road it would be game over.

Ex wife is walking down a market street in Hanoi, narrow passage way. A vendor steps out hawking some trinkets, and does not let her pass, will not budge. Trapping people physically in the hope of making a sale.

Very strange behaviour in Vietnam.

Not a fan of the Typhoons tbh.

The problem with traveling, is you always have to take yourself with you.

How would be Perth for 3 weeks, to get my prostate embolised? I looked at hotels, they cost a fortune...

I guess you mean Australian hotels are expensive and that's true.  Everything in Australia is expensive: rent, electricity, water, gas, council rates, food, drink (especially coffeee and draught beer, restaurants, taxis ...

The ladyboys did garner a larger footprint (as men do) but they are gone and the whole four floors no longer exists as we remember it. There were some criminal activities, probably Vietnamese gangsters protecting their patch, with shootings and, if I'm not mistaken, some foreign tourists may got caught in the crossfire. The authorities took that as their queue to shutter all the bars and clubs, bad for the image, etc..

But not milk or pizzas apparently.

On a Saturday, the roads around the lake are shut off to make it pedestrian friendly. On 3 occasions some small smiling children approached me and asked if I would help them with learning English. That was probably the highlight of my visit. My missus is keen on going to Sapa but I dont think its worth the bother myself. Overrun with tourists from what I have read and your post seems to confirm that.

I had the police come into my hotel room to inspect for girls. They knocked, but unlocked the door when I did not answer. Checked in closet, bathroom, etc. Asked for passport. Was alone at the time fortunately. This was near drinking street in Hcmc.

It was a chore pushing through the crowds up the stairs to the top (shouting, pushing etc...) but it was 99% older viet people. Traffic was crazy too given how tiny it was but we rented a motorbike anyways and had some fun (if you ride a motorbike in Thailand it's manageable but annoying).

Even so I would recommend anyone go. The cable car was really cool, great weather and being that high up in Asia is a treat. Highest peaks where I live in Thailand are 1200 meters and that was 3500 I think. I just wish it was more mellow but that's now how those people are sadly.

it's illegal to take girls back to your room? What if you just met some girl at a bar or something?

It's only having them overnight, strangely. So out by 9pm in my opinion. It only seems to be an issue with hotels/guesthouses. If you met someone after that there are plenty of short time hotels (usually numbers for the name. Like Hotel 303, etc), that probably would not get inspected. It would still be a risk though.

It's an outdated esoteric law so not rigidly enforced. Nightlife areas are most at risk.

Not a problem for rented apartments or AirBB, unless someone complained, but not common.

Glad I got to experience DaNang before the Instagram crowd flocked there and ruined the place.   Time to go elsewhere now.

That law was revoked years back.

Same as Thailand now, they leave their ID at the desk.

So many hooker bars at Vung Tau around front beach.

Bit intimidating really, I walked into a bar on my own, full of girls.

The place went completely silent, they all turn to look at me, girl walks up to me .....

"Hi, I'm 18 and the only girl in this bar that speaks English, how far is your hotel room?"

Scarey!

Just back from 4 days in Da Nang.

Don't go in typhoon season, it p!ssed down solidly for 3 days.

Da Nang is great if you like Pho and Banh My.

It is bigger than I remember from my 3 previous visits. Great infrastructure - which it will need because it is being over-developed.

Hoi An just up the road.

I stayed at Mixay Boutique hotel, one street back, in a deluxe Ocean View room for 1,150 Baht a night (including a crappy breakfast).

I read somewhere that Geylang is no longer the red light area, is that right? I remember all the Chinese hookers on the street in Geylang - sort of lined up like troops out for inspection of the guard. They were interspersed with filipinas, but many of the Chinese girls were stunning. I guess that's at least 15 years ago...
