I have been to Malaysia many times, and most of the places mentioned by the OP, I guess you have never been to Langkawi it beats Thailand hands down.

Is it still a Duty Free island where most places will not allow you to drink?

There is no question that Malaysia is a very beautiful country with pristine jungles incredible beaches and beautiful islands. For me the issue is that the people are just not as much fun to be around

what is fun in Thailand ?

Im just curious what some people thinks is fun when going holiday.

I guess if I have to explain it to you, you just will not understand. I have fun here everyday, I love the Thai people, I consider them incredibly playful, and if you're equally light-hearted with them they respond in kind, it's very easy to get the average Thai  person to laugh, and joking around with them is so much fun.

Malaysia has a lot to enjoy and it's environment is more pristine than Thailand's. Having said that some of Thailand's beach, mountain and jungle landscapes are undeniably impressive and, although it has faded a bit in recent times, Thailand's fun factor is far greater than can generally be found in Malaysia.

I assume he's not being totally serious, since as others have said, how do you measure it? You can only give a subjective opinion that you feel something is better.

If he is being serious, then regardless of what his specialty he's not as clever as he thinks he is, which isn't a great surprise.

How did the professor assess the natural beauty of the landscapes in both countries?

He didn't. His comment is completely stupid and meaningless

If the nature in Malaysia is much more beautiful than in Thailand I would not dare to discuss.. There are nice places in Thailand, but I saw recently that the building and construction in national parks are destroying a lot, just to serve the high society to get beautiful houses in a shaded area...Besides that immigration is very friendly and the people speak more English than Thailand.. In a recent Dutch article it was stated that Bangkok and Phuket were famous for their scamming and warned people not to use their creditcards for renting things but pay cash nothing about Malaysia however... These things will not benefit the tourism, and I am sure everywhere there are troubles, but when places are named, it will surely cost visitors.. Thailand need serious foreign people to restore their tourism, as with the conservative and illogical thinking, they will never succeed to restore

About the credit scamming, it's unfortunately true. The last time I was in Chiang Mai, I was using a foreign credit card for most of my purchases, I was very careful about not handling the card so they could copy the details of some scam like that. So, all my purchases were completed in the "touch and pay" feature. After I left Thailand, in my next statement there were around 500 dollars in purchases at Facebook, possibly the person bought Facebook adds.

So I had to go through the trouble of disputing the charges, eventually I was successful and there was a reversal of the charges. It was a lot of headaches, do I advise anyone to think twice before using a credit card in Thailand.

Unfortunately many westerners have completely lost, or even never had a sense of humor... LOL

I visited Batu Caves during the festival of Thaipusam, the sheer weight of numbers carries you up the stairs, coming down was more scary because of the crowds.

I went twice in normal days and the experience was very pleasant, it's important to know that it requires some fitness to climb those stairs to the top.

I have 400 times more intimate relationships with Thai girls than Malaysian girls. :coffee1:

Since beauty itself is "arbitrary and subjective" by definition, the "Professor" is only speaking for himself.

And just who is this professor anyway, what is this, is this "Gilligan's Island"

Most Thai women are plain or ugly, where this Thai lady very bootiful comes from I don't know.

What I really think is funny, so much talk about beautiful ladies meanwhile dispariging the locals saying to foreigners "you hansum" and in reality most of the males are only thinking of the ladies below the waist or maybe including below the neck and how they can jump those bones. MHO as a male anyway.

Im familiar with thai humor and no need to explain, and it can be entertaining, I would struggle on a daily basis tho in the long run

Yeah but what the professor forgot to mention is that most of Malaysia is Muslim... and I don't like Muslim countries. I find them boring as boring as the Muslims living there find it aswell looking at their face expressions.

Port Dickson, Langkawi, Redang, and Mersing

This professor has no clue what he is on about. Port Dickson? It's not even in the shadows of Bang Saen and Bang Saen isn't even the best Thailand has to offer. On food alone, Thailand trumps Malaysia. Langkawi? Apart from the cheap duty-free booze, not much. Pantai Cenang, which I suspect has been modelled to emulate Pattaya's Beach Road, is just an empty street that offers not much. Again, not much variety in terms of food. The Chinese street/hawker food in Langkawi is "meh" at best, and quite a few Chinese restos don't serve pork to pander to the "halal" crowd. Haven't been to Redang and Mersing but on accounts from friends who have, they're also nowhere near what Thailand has to offer.

The other problem in Malaysia is the religious and racial segregation and sometimes its overzealous policing, and not by official authorities at that. There has been reports that tourists were "harassed" and reprimanded in Langkawi for wearing shorts. On an island with beaches, FFS. The segregation and discrimination against "non-Muslim" and "non-Malay" is so obvious, it leaves a bad aftertaste. Sure, it's their country and their rule, But, and without disrespect, I am also exercising my own rights to share and inform about Malaysian based on my own experiences. I travel to Malaysia often, so I know.

There was a place I used to like to go to in Malaysia - Cameron Highlands (about 5,500 ft above sea level) but, apart from the weather, the place is now run-down and unkempt.

Overall, Thailand has better and cleaner facilities - cleaner public toilets (most in Malaysia reek, and Malaysians don't flush, for some inexplicable reasons) and better service attitude. The Thais in general are also more fun to be around. And don't get me started on beer and alcohol prices in Malaysia (bar Langkawi).

I am not putting down Malaysia completely, but it certainly isn't 400 times "more beautiful" than Thailand. Maybe the other way around. A lot of their "tourist destinations" are not kept properly, are messy/dirty, unkempt and not properly managed. Most started off with good objectives, but lackadaisical attitudes and lack of pride of ownership have undermined these "destinations". This is in sharp contrast with Thailand, where everything must look good.

Look at it this way - there is a reason why more Malaysians brace the drive, traffic and queues to holiday in the southern towns, cities and provinces of Thailand than spend weekends and holidays in Malaysia. It's all over the news, so this "professor" is really quite dumb to say what he said. Malaysians thronged places like Haadyai and Betong during the recent four-day weekend, while businesses in Malaysia cried for business. "Professor"... 55555

Humor can be quite diverse and sense of humor is quite an open field depending where you come from and personality. So claiming others do not have sense of humor, ,,,,, your humor might  not be their cup of tea. Some like it black and some ,,,,,

Doubt the natural beauty is more but I was most impressed that Malaysia has buried far more of their electrical and cable wires than Thailand has.  It certainly enhances the view not to be staring at an ugly, messy jumble of overhead wires.

Well then Thailand's obviously not the place for you, we go to a place where we think it is a good fit. For me it's not just the humor, it's the light-heartedness, and the willingness to maintain a light heart on a daily basis regardless of circumstances.

For me Thailand's is a great fit, for a lot of my friends Thai and is a great fit, for some guys it's not, and that is all good.

Ridiculous.

I am pretty certain that Malaysia is only 299 times more beautiful than Thailand.

But by all means go there and check it out, and stay there.

A good sustainable healthy  life is not all about joking around everyday. We get older and the same repeating things do gets kind of boring after awhile more the older we get. It doesnt mean we do not enjoy our life because we do not have the same childish fun anymore as we used to.

And nordic culture is a bit more serious on average than other people and it is basically not only a culturally thing, it is a personal type thing to.

There got to be a balance, and there is some who jokes around to much to, and do not understand how Thais just play along with them. Not claiming you do, but there is some who are not aware of their surroundings and can not read the room .
