How do I find a short term place to live here?

Featured Replies

I was told Chiang Mai was a digital nomad paradise, which I naively connected to having lots of easy month to month accomodation.

So far my experience has been exactly the opposite, the condos I've been to near Nimman and CMU all want 6 month contracts, even when I can see their postings on notice boards saying 1 month is fine. I guess greed is setting in with the locals as high season approaches. Green and unprofessionalism. Agents seem clueless, don't want to do any work, despite me being willing to pay a lot more for short term. Don't want to talk to owners etc. AirBnB is fragmented, can't rent monthly anywhere, so I'd have to move around every 10 days.

What's going on people? I am very close to saying <deleted> it and going back down south. This town rubs me the wrong way in a major way already. The only reason I'm saying is because I want to ride my bicycle in the mountains, but I need a place to stay for that.

I'm currently staying in a <deleted>ty "residence" with a smelly toilet and a <deleted>ty bed. This I suppose is the "digital nomad paradise".

Can any one recommend at least decent monthly accomodation in Nimman/CMU/Doi Suthep area?

  • I never ever had to live in a place with a smelly toilet in Thailand. That's one of the first things to check. Shower, toilet, water flow and if the water drains away. Before the functioning of AC's.

  • If you want month by month stay, you pay month by month price.   I'm sure you find options on airb.

No, there are not any options on AirBnB for monthly.

Being a digital nomad but can't find any offers on the net is somehow a bit strange.

drive around and stop at potential condos, and ask.

also ask anyone you know, or at the resturant you eat at

Well, someone did reach out with condo offerings, so we will see if its legit or a scam.

NuanPranee guesthouse, round the alley between where soi 1 and soi 2 join on muanmung moat road, 7,000bht/month. Right in the middle of the tourist action.

Emporium residence in Santitham road, 6000bht/month. Thai student area, shops and Thai beer bars close at hand.

Both places good enough, monthly contracts, plenty to do nearby, and 5 mins cycling distance from Zoo and hill climb to Doi Suthep.

For one to month stays, look for a serviced apartment or residence. Somewhere like Smith Residence starts at around 7,000 baht/mth for a standard room.

It’s not, that’s just another way of saying/being a tourist.

Try a service apartment, and if the contract is for longer than your stay then don’t expect a deposit refund. Have you considered a hotel or hostel? They’re setup for folks such as yourself.

Good idea.

All that happened is a bunch of tourists clustered into a ghetto and once that formed the locals started opening more businesses to accommodate the tourists. Now it's a "paradise" apparently but in reality it's just the northern most tourist ghetto in Thailand outside of Pai.

it's high season. Oct=Feb is the busiest time in Chiang Mai. Everything gets booked and it's when people make their money. Nobody renting <deleted> during smokey season.

I've got a 2 bedroom condo available for monthly rent in the city. 20k thb a month if you are interested. will need to confirm before next week as it will rent out quick as soon as I post it back as available again (always rented out easily in high season, then I need to drop rents after Feb)

Why can't you rent for another 10days at the same place ?

Hotels are places to stay for short term.

Hotels also offers long term and do have sometimes better kitchen than most new condos today.

We visited a big hotel in Chiang Mai with large swimmingpool and a quite nice old gym also open for outside members. Do not remember the name, but big rooms with kitchen at a decent price.

Stay in a guest house vs a condo.  Still pretty cheap.  You can come and go any time.

Built in restaurant perhaps.

Other amenities sometimes like bikes you can borrow, maybe a kitchen you can cook in.

Other people around every day for networking.

Chang Mai is far a better place with some humanity still left and all that at bargain rates....total opposite of some areas in Bangkok, or mainly Phuket or Hua Hin that are over rated, overcharging all over and they just take foreigners for ATM's...Good hit for the moment to go out for Chang Mai.

You are right for Hua Hin. That is mainly due to the many foreigners living there who foolishly allow themselves to get cheated and could not be bothered. Until suddenly they understand when it goes to far.

I rented 6 months.

There are 3 month rentals, but after seeing the amount of bait and switch attemped, I decided against it. In any case, I got a nice condo for a good price, so 6 months is definitely the way to go at this time.
