Helping the powerful taxi mafia, as usual. Nothing will change, still no meters, over-priced rip off quotes to destinations if you are not Thai, poor driving standards, and all the usual sloppy service... so glad I gave up on public transport.

They overcharge Thais as well. My wife was quoted 900 THB from Bkk airport to central ladprao.

Which is over the top!

  • No, it won't. It will be the same as when they raised the salaries of Customs officials to reduce corruption. Same corruption, just being paid more.

  • Fair enough, if it makes it easier to find a taxi driving on the meter charge.

Every taxi has a meter and the majority in Bangkok use them, what are you talking about?

In Bangkok I find that many of the rides I book on an app are serviced by normal taxis anyway, works very well.

That's because you choose the option that includes taxis!  If you don't choose that option, a taxi will not turn up.

I prefer my chances with the lottery 😬

One in several million chance for the lottery compared to a one in 1.11 (90%+) chance that you'll get a taxi on the meter in Bangkok?   Why would you prefer those odds?

It was only yesterday they denied it, and said it was only in discussion...today it is fact...

What was denied yesterday...that there will  be a "rush hour service fee" implemented?

the change is a fee adjustment, not a fare hike

Let's see - you pay a higher fare, but it's not a fare hike?

Correct.  The meter rate is exactly the same but at certain times only there is a service fee.

Taxis are ridiculously cheap which is why its so difficult to find one who uses the meter.

But it isn't, the majority of Bangkok taxis will go on the meter, a few bad apples won't.

who on earth still uses a regular taxi now that we have BOLT or UBER....lol

Thousands of people who don't want to wait for a Bolt/Grab car while there are thousands of metered taxis flying past.

Uber?

As if taxis actually use the meter. I don't remember the last time one did.

Clearly you don't use Bangkok taxis very much, then.

Grab transport is literally double the price of Bolt

No, it, literally, is not, perhaps Grab is 19-20% more depending on the car you want, that's all.

Grab transport is literally double the price of Bolt and other alternatives now. Not sure why but it is so expensive it is not a viable option. Even a scam taxi is cheaper.

Nonsense.

I don,t know if it will work, first timers in bkk you will conned by overpriced fares plus the tax.If you pull over a taxi ask for the meter ride and they know you got to barter or refuse.Taxis in bkk are like the ones in cnx a monpoly  and other towns  and you will never win and somehow get caught paying too much

And it has been shown some taxis have meters that have been modified

And it has been shown an insignificant number of Bangkok taxis have meters that have been modified as the majority are cooperative-owned.

So you don't deny what I said, and I did say "some" not all, and are you suggesting no coop taxis have modified meters....

Yes, I am, it would be very foolish of them to do that.   Doubtless you have evidence that the cooperatives do have hooky meters, though.

Nonsense, metered taxis are not a monopoly in Bangkok. There are ride-hailing apps to choose from also.  There are tens of thousands registered taxis in Bangkok and if the driver attempts to negotiate an off-meter ride just refuse and get the next taxi that will be along in seconds.  We can always win if we wait a couple of minutes and pay the metered fare.

Parked-up taxi drivers  are much more likely to not want to use the meter. Always hail a moving taxi.

I agree.   Never even consider a discussion with a parked taxi driver.

No evidence.,but do you have evidence to back up your comment.

I don't need evidence to say that it would be foolish of them to do that.
