He being a long time expat should have known you can't just walk across crossings, you have to wait until clear

I know that being in my 70s I'm simply not as attuned to what is around me as I was even 10 years ago.  I know when I cross a street I look right/left, maybe left/right, and do it again. and then keep my eyes moving to my peripheries as I cross.  Why - neither my hearing, eye-sight, or balance is what it was and I don't pick of the kinesthetic ques from my surroundings that I used to.  If standing in a median, I try to be really aware of traffic.  Now with that said, it sounds like the motorcyclist lost control and the elderly guy got hit.  It may just be one of those things.  Maybe his saw it and had an "Oh sh*t" moment.  Or maybe he didn't see it at all.  But to not get killed or injured in Thailand while crossing the street, you need to be all eyes and ears, and be actively scanning what is around you.  The roads are dangerous here.  That's just a fact.  Now as far as the Op being bent out of shape because it was a farang driver.  I've been on this forum for 16+ years and there are just all types of people. Some people don't like there own ethnicity.

was the pedestrian?

When you are 84 yo come back and comment on how your crossing skills are.....

Exactly.  Which means that a 84 year old really needs to pay a lot closer attention, because what you miss will probably kill you here in the Land of Smiles Road Accidents.

I'm going to err on the side of caution and say no without knowing the facts. It was 7pm and the gent was going to meet friends for dinner. I don't know any 84 year olds who turn up plastered for dinner with friends at 7pm. Do you? Not saying there aren't such people but I will stick with my pretty safe guess.

…isn’t the issue, it’s the lack of strict enforcement of laws and the unlicensed along with unschooled on the roads.

I was a little shocked and upset  to hear of Pattaya socialite Barry Kenyon being killed by a alleged farang on a motorbike whilst waiting on a pedestrian island to cross a road in Jomtien

I must say I noticed last time in Pattaya   a "free for all " from young farangs going berserk on motorbikes particularly in Jomtien where they would go bat out of hell with no helmets on

No police around,no one cares it ends up in deaths , innocent people

And I have no idea if it's the same type of policing in other parts of tourist areas eg Phuket

But I can assure you more people will lose their lives as SELFISH tourist farangs think their is no law

I was going to say ok I agree let's not make it like Australia, but Australia is just as bad where they allow people to ride fast push bikes on pedestrian footpaths !!!!!

The police particularly the tourist police need to clamp down,it appears they have lowered their obligations

More deaths caused by farangs this high season no doubt as the young ones affected by alcohol will speed madly

And it's m farangs from EVERY country doing this ...

Watch as they speed in Jomtien, loud motorbikes ,"look at me ,look at me !!!

My biggest problem with farangs are the tourists who come here having never ridden a motorcycle in their lives and then 1) rent one with no experience, or worse 2) rent a big bike having had no experience on a bike.  I'd driven in the US. I had taken classes, I had my DL endorsements, and I had experience.  Then when I got to Thailand I was in 3 accidents in the first year.  It's dangerous as hell here.  After the third accident I went into 100% defensive driving mode.  So when I see a farang on a bike driving like they have never driven a motorcycle, i.e., in a manner that may get them killed, I just shake my head.  Farangs per-se are not the issue.  Driving beyond your capabilities is a problem.  Getting on a motorcycle without training or experience here in Thailand is a recipe to get yourself killed or to kill someone else.

It's definitely another world as far as drivers and how life itself is looked at. I never had near a motorbike accident until I came here, and was constantly on my toes , being cut off, and almost sideswiped by cars and motorbikes many times driving here.

Just a few months ago, someone cut in front of me on a scooter/sidecart, without looking, just as I got right to where he was waiting on the side of the road to cut across it. I had nowhere to go but into him, and seeing he didn't have the ability to pay, it was dropped. Luckily my daughter and I were not hurt, although the scooter needs repairs. This is yet another reason I will move with my daughter, as I will never see her riding a scooter by herself. I've had more near misses in Thailand in just one year than all of my life driving in the US.

Do you have any statistics on these *magnitudes" and thankyou for bringing this new word up

You think that's a new word?  Wow.  But he is right, in a country where 99.999% of motorcyclists are Thai there are bound to be more Thais driving motorcycles who run down pedestrians.

It's used colloquially. What's you're point?

Do you understand colloquiallisms?

Yes, I do, well, I understand "colloquialisms", not "colloquiallisms"!    Do you understand bad English?     The words are not interchangeable, they do not mean the same except by some who excuse their ignorance as being colloquialism.

Yes, do you?   Do you also understand the meaning of the word "accuracy", a word that has no relationship to "pedantic".

It's part of the aging process for some people, so, probably not.

Continually antagonizing/correcting people for no good reason could be construed as trolling.

That's against the rules also.

Doesn't seem to bother you.

but they are a foreigner.

What is the Thai work for foreigner?

when used without reference to a particular person ....... all foreigners  would be "chow dtang prathet " .

farang is used in reference to people of many countries ...(even from places like Iraq .)

some exceptions would be black......  negro

japan...... yipoon      china .....khon chin     (where the specific country is known........   but generally  Khon Asia )

and of course Indians .........  "kheck "

Finding statistics on the level of insane driving here isn't hard. It's been going on for decades and most likely will continue for more, for a variety of reasons. One being the lack of consideration for others, and another the lack of training before they get licenses. Add to this the lack of real concern for life itself here compared to the west, the lack of enforcement of laws that are already on the books and children driving illegally here, allowed by multitudes of unconcerned parents.

84 year olds preparing to meet friends for dinner? You see plenty of these do you? Drinking heavily in the afternoons during your extensive stakeout of the Jomtien Complex every day.

Thanks for clearing that one up Sherlock.

You are probably right, although i know expats who start drinking lunchtime and finish early evening
