Is that still the case?

Haven't been for in a pub later than about 9pm for a lifetime.

Do they still ring a bell (obvs something to be avoided like the plague in a Thai bar)?

Ringing a bell in Thailand also cost money,

  • just more confusion, how are customers supposed to know the licencing laws in force for any particular venue especially tourists on a 2 week holiday, this is insane

  • Stupidity is gigantic in Thailand..The country wants tourist but Thailand wants to control everything just as they do with the Thai people.. Tourists don't come to a country that treat people like kid

  • Why is Thailand always about “How can we suck more money out of these tourists“?

How do we know if the premises are legally licensed?

Apparently it is your responsibility to find out!!!

I guess you have to demand to see their license and use Google translate.

I found out from an earlier post this isn't about establishments as such........you are not allowed to drink even at home during the dark hours.

''restrict alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm '' does it make sense to anyone? what is happening between those hours

that alcohol sales are being restricted? Any One?

Thai's start drinking at noon or when they stop for lunch some will continue to drink through the afternoon, when they finish work they drink more then they drive drunk and pass on outside of curve, then they crash through a cement fence and the only thing to stop them is a 29 year old mother and her 4 year old son! they didn't make it, but don't worry the insurance on the company truck paid off the family, and the Thai got to drink another day!!!!!        This is why there is a alcohol ban between 2 a 5pm    Its not a perfect solution but what is?

Apparently so, a English guy got stopped in a taxi in Bangkok and he had a drink in his hand, the  police breathalyzed him and it was negative, so they didn't fine him as it was unopened,

Yep, not sure about the law on this one, but a friend in Hua Hin was stopped at a checkpoint and fined for carrying some beers, and a bottle of vodka on the back seat.

In his own car or a taxi?

bs, same as the taxi breathalyser post...

Surely most bars need a license to operate . so can serve alcohol

when they like.Do people really think all those sports bars etc.,in the Sukhumvit area in Bangkok are going to stop serving beers at 2pm.

My guess is that there will be limited selective enforcement... they will focus on people behaving badly, and then enforce on them. Why else would they put this on the buyer and not the seller.

In his truck on the way back from Makro.

Suit yourself, I have no reason to bull**it, this happened about 10 years ago, he told me in the bar later the same day. I have no reason to doubt him. Have a a nice life.

Weird response.....read the facts related to the new laws and explain precisely what aspect you consider to be trolling.

I'll assume no response is because you are too weak and too pathetic to concede

Like as usual they bring more prohibitions and new laws to make more money, they are not really enforced all the time and in all places, just there to nit pick a few and make a few bobs for the enforcement officers when they feel like it... , and further up of course make money by granting licences to selective "generous" establishment..., good days work all around, public health is the last thing on their mind, period...!

Recently, my proposal is to get rid of all politicians in all countries and replace them with an AI app...! A lot cheaper if anything... 🤗

It The only way  to  bring the Thai baht under control kill the tourists industry

It was only last week they were talking of abolishing the 2 to 5 drinking law now their reinforcing

I see there a lot of daytime boozers out there judging by the complaints,  not all tourists come to Thailand so they can sit and booze all day long, they have better things to do, in fact most of them have it seems.

If they just wanted to booze all day they could go to local resorts nearer to their own countries and sit in the sun with a beer all day long.

I can guess the bars are full of moaning old expats with nothing else to do with their time.

Have any of the moaners come to realise this law is an attempt to improving the health of Thais, you know the ones who form the majority of this country and not directed at tourists or the moaning expats?

If  a tourists in a tourist area fancied a beer they could easily spot what a licensed premises is as is the case in Phuket, they have big signs saying 'HOTEL' for example, which are clearly stated to be outside of the time restrictions.

Thai laws are aimed at Thais and  not us long term annual visa extension jockeys.

It is their country after all, if you don't like the laws then go to a country which suits your drinking habits.

I could start a union of "moan workers", except the moaners probably do not work as they spend all day in a bar. 😀

I welcome any laws that curbs that antics of Beniform council estate Brits. The perpetuance for violence after a few drinks is like no other.

Next step should be to take tougher action on public marijauna use.

"The law, first enacted in 1972 to restrict alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm at most retail outlets and supermarkets, has now been updated to shift responsibility from sellers to consumers."

What a great way to encourage tourists! I bet TAT are pleased as punch (pun intended!)

Can anyone tell me of any other country (purporting to be a tourist friendly destination) that has this archaic nonsensical law?

I dread coming to Thailand twice a year. I am not really into beer anymore, but I like a glass of wine with my meal. My Thai family has the habit of going out for lunch late, about 2 pm, and they are all non-drinkers, so they don't care. Yes, I can buy drinks for home before but I enjoy a drink with my meal. So I do think it is not fair to tourists.

This law is soo dumb, because you are allowed to drink a beer only from 5pm to 11pm

Nonsense.  That is not what the law says.

Alcohol is not permitted on Thai beaches at any time, been that way for ages.

A few weeks back there was the idea to open the entertainment venue till 4 am.. Why should they do it, as the visitors are not allowed to drink??

From the OP that you did not read...

"licensed entertainment venues, hotels, certified tourist establishments and international airports are exempt"
