Scrap the Booze Ban! Tourism Groups Demand PM Action

This law is completely contradictory. On one hand, there's a strong push to promote tourism, while on the other, efforts are being made to undermine it.

I think it shows that there's no unification within the government, and one lowly department creates dumb and thoughtless policy without any consideration whatsoever for the other important agendas that the nation has. It is truly the blind leading the blind.

I feel like a broken record as I'm saying this over and over again, but there's really no hope for progress within Thailand until the youth take control.

It is a surly, ridiculous, outdated, purile, and useless rule, that reveals a sense of fake puritanism, and makes Thailand appear to be utterly foolish to the world.

  • Dinosaurs still rule... everywhere else they went extinct

  • It's always been and remains ridiculous. Why 2-5?

Are bars complying in Bangkok? say around soi Nana, its usually very busy in the afternoon in that area

In Pattaya so far, no change that i can see

No need to close the barn anymore, the horses have bolted away.

In other words, tourists opt for Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines or Sri Lanka.

To offset the alcohol bans, I'm sure someone will pass laws to only allow the smoking of weed between the hours of 2-5 and after 12.

I have mentioned this before, these types of people were not at the front of the queue when IQ was being handed out.

Actually, you should say, ‘Don't blame them, they don't know any better.’

And unfortunately never will as it's permanently fused to their DNA.

A good example of not thinking it through properly. The 1972 booze act that includes the 2-5 ban was introduced to stop government employees from getting drunk in the afternoons instead of being at work.

Sometimes I think they intentionally make these sort of things as ambiguous as possible so they confuse everyone to the point where individual officers or areas can enforce as they see fit. The Thai government should join the 21st century and let this nanny state nonsense go. I guess it might just get quietly shelved or swept under the carpet with some jobsworth saying "Nothing to see here, move along" after they realise how much damage it will do.

Next week we will see headlines like Tourists numbers worrying leading up to the high or Christmas season, and the old Covid answer will be rolled out not the fact that tourists hve had enough flying half way round the world to sit on the Beach with a chilled bottle of water or sunbathing round a hotel pool instead a nice chilled beer.

What about before 11am?

Nobody thinks about that one. Makro opens at 6am and there's been many a time that I woke up in the night and couldn't get back to sleep. Thought I'd utilise the time and get some shopping in but... 😟

First massive fines for vaping, and now 10,000 THB for having the nerve to drink a beer at 4:45pm.

What's not to like? 😆

Fining tourists lol. Donkeys. Vietnam rubbing its hands. They won’t come back once they’ve found their new paradise.

as i understood it Originally was to stop school kids buying after school let out

BUT as anyone that ives here knows, 90% of mom & pop shops still sell it to anyone thta can reach over the counter and has the $$$

a rather crazy law that has zero positive affect and totally unenforceable

sales and consumption ban during 2 p.m.–5 p.m. and after midnight, which includes fines for offenders.

No such rediculous bans or fines here in tourist friendly Cambodia if you fly into the Country (land borders with Thailand still closed by Thailand). Tourists are warmly welcomed and they can enjoy a refreshing chilled beer at any time of the day or night, no such Thai BS here in Siem Reap! There are bars and restaurants where a small glass of draught beer (330ml) will cost 50 US cents (about 16 baht!). The land borders with Laos and Vietnam are open as normal.

So you can get back to work, for the Thai workers' benefit.

Apparently that’s the reason and loss of productivity returning to work drunk if it can get any lower. I bet there are more public servants sneaking out for a quickie with the gik than drinking. Ban sex between those hours too while you’re at it. 😂😂😂

Agree. This is just as insane but never seems to get mentioned in either the media or by most on here.

much nicer beer than what's available here,  and a far wider selection

Yes indeed, with many Cambodian breweries using French techniques. There are many local craft beers. My local Angkor Supermarket in Siem Reap has many shelves and coolers selling a vast range of bottled and canned beers and ciders from around the World. For me it is the selection of English Ciders that is of interest. The Thai Chang, Leo, UBeer and Singha beers are not available due to the ban and boycott of Thai products.  Thailand has certainly shot itself in the foot.

and done the beer drinkers in Cambodia a big favour , whether they realise it or not is a different matter but they will all adapt and few will return to Thai beers in the future

its unnecessary but all is not lost, there is plenty of mom & pop shops that will sell beer

I don't generally buy alcohol outside of hours at the store, but I do actually make an effort to buy anything I can from my local mom & pop shop before opting for other locations.

People criticise law here for being ignored or inconsistent.

It seems obvious that a stupid law is going to have no effect.

Sometimes it all works and  sense will prevail.

Foreigners visit Thailand specifically to party.  An alcohol ban of this type will undoubtedly kill tourism.  Once they realize the lost revenue, they will have no choice but to change it back!

I doubt that limiting alcohol hours will kill tourism all by itself, but it is "one more nail" hammered into the coffin of Thailand's decreasing appeal to tourists worldwide.

Plenty of families come to the LoS, rent a villa or luxury suite and go trekking and elephant rides as a family, etc.  And some Asian tourists, like from China, who have a different understanding of "party" than Americans, Brits, Russians, and so on.

I'm sure price gouging does more to discourage tourists.  And for Chinese, the kidnapping and enslavement by telephone scammers is a real downer

On the news last night they said they are doing away with the 2pm to 5pm restrictions  ??

I honestly don't think anyone knows the reason for 2-5 sales ban.....It's become sort of a sacred cow that's been around so long that they are afraid to change the useless rule..

It was originally related to school time. However, since the police could not or did not want to enforce the current retail sales laws, politicians had to create another none enforceable law.  And, now another one on top of that.
