A 75-year-old British woman was killed instantly after being struck by a car while crossing Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road in Nonthaburi on the afternoon of 2 December, leaving her husband devastated just weeks before they had planned to celebrate Christmas together in Pattaya. Police said the collision occurred at around 13:00 near Sai Noi Hospital, where officers and rescue workers found the body of Suzanne Routledge lying on the road with severe head and neck injuries. The impact left the driver in shock and the community mourning the sudden loss.

Mrs Routledge, who lived nearby with her husband David, had been running across the road toward a traffic island when the crash happened. According to police, the driver, 40-year-old online vendor Jarunan, had just completed a U-turn and was unable to brake in time when Routledge suddenly stopped in her path. Officers took Jarunan for questioning before later charging her with reckless driving causing death.

The couple had been long-term residents in the Sai Noi area, having retired to Thailand eight years earlier and settled in the community five years ago. Local deputy mayor Somsak Duangsano said he knew them well, as they regularly joined residents in supporting the Nonthaburi football team and were known for cycling around their neighbourhood each morning. He added that just days before the collision, the couple had told him they had booked accommodation in Pattaya to spend Christmas together.

The driver expressed distress at the incident, telling officers she felt terrible about the woman’s death and wished the victim could have recovered if she had only been injured. David arrived at Sai Noi Police Station later in deep grief, keeping his head down while giving his statement to officers. Somsak said the grieving husband showed no anger toward the driver, telling him that blaming her would not bring his wife back.

Khoasod reported that authorities will continue handling the legal process following the charge against the driver, while arrangements for a Thai Buddhist ceremony are expected to proceed with community support. Somsak said he was ready to help ensure the funeral rites are carried out respectfully for Mrs Godwin.

If there is no pedestrian crossing it should not be drivers fault.

RIP to the lady... Why she stopped in frint of the oncoming car is beyond me unless her age slowed her reflexes. But at least the driver of the car did not run and is remorseful. I hope the husband can move on with his life and perhaps even find someone else. Not much of a life at his age and alone.

It really is a two person cooperation of each person using good judgement to avoid an accident.

RIP, sorry your Christmas plans and life were ruined.

RIP Godwin

I'd think with repeated reports of pedestrian injury and deaths crossing Thailand roads, especially NOT in marked pedestrian cross walks would caution after 13 years, any one crossing highways would be very attentive and careful.

Sorry for the victim and sad the driver didn't pay more attention.

Having seen this on TV I have a degree of sympathy with the driver. The deceased certainly put herself at great risk. Condolences to her husband, family and friends.

Agreed..

Unfortunately, being world's #1 in road accidents comes with a price measured in human life. Zebra crossings just give bad drivers somewhere to aim. Nobody climbs those stairs! Maybe crossings should have railway gates.

Nobody really gets over killing or injuring someone with their car. I hope her husband makes peace with the driver and forgives her.

Just done u-turn? How much acceleration was involved to cause so much damage to car from a body? Reckless sounds right

UPDATE
Dashcam Contradicts Driver After British Woman Killed in Nonthaburi

A British woman was killed while crossing a road in Nonthaburi on December 3 after being struck by a Thai motorist whose initial account was later disproven by dashcam footage. Police and rescue teams found the victim, 75-year-old Suzanne Routledge, lying on the right lane near the traffic island outside Areeya Village on Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road. The footage, which circulated widely online, challenged the driver’s claim that the victim had suddenly stopped walking.

Officers from Sai Noi Police Station were alerted to the incident at around 13:00 and arrived with the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue team. Routledge, who lived in Areeya Village with her husband, was wearing a black T-shirt and brown shorts and had sustained severe injuries to her head and arm. A white Toyota Fortuner with a damaged bumper was found parked on the opposite side of the road, approximately ten metres from her body.

The driver, 39-year-old Jarunan, told police she had been travelling from Lam Luk Ka district in Pathum Thani to meet a friend at a local supermarket. She stated that she saw Routledge crossing ahead and assumed the woman would reach the traffic island before the vehicle approached. According to her account, the victim unexpectedly stopped walking, leaving her unable to brake in time to avoid the collision.

Dashcam footage released online soon after prompted widespread disagreement with the driver’s explanation. The video showed Routledge moving at a steady walking pace without stopping at any point before the impact. Netizens criticised Jarunan for driving at high speed and failing to brake while approaching a pedestrian already halfway across the road.

Police later questioned Jarunan at Sai Noi Police Station. She was charged with reckless driving causing death under Section 219 of the Criminal Law, an offence carrying a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 baht. Officers continued to gather evidence, including the dashcam recording shared online.

CAUTION VIDEO SHOWS THE COLLISION

Key Takeaways

• Dashcam footage contradicted the driver’s claim that the victim stopped suddenly before being struck on December 3 in Nonthaburi.

• Police charged the driver, 39-year-old Jarunan, with reckless driving causing death, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

• The victim, 75-year-old British national Suzanne Routledge, had lived in Thailand for eight years and was well known in the local community.

The way I read it was that the husband said those words to Somsak.

The story has been updated now indicating that dashcam footage showed that the woman did not stop when crossing. It was clearly a case of reckless driving by the Thai female driver,

Yes, you are right. It could be read that way as well.

Thai lying again to try and push the blame onto the victim  they have no shame !! nor any responsibility

The dashcam footage appears to show that the Fortuner didn't swerve or brake. I hope the police check her phone records.

I probably don't want to watch it. Someone tell me what happened. Thanks.

I try never to cross the road here in Thailand.

Some people get right and left mixed up.

In HK, in tourist areas, especially....

On the road, before you cross, there will be warnings to....

LOOK LEFT

or.... is it....

LOOK RIGHT

Luckily you don't have to. The police have seen it and charged the driver accordingly.

This time I agree with those "Netizens". But it's totally normal for Thai drivers. They never slow down to anticipate something unexpected.

Fool, driver's responsibility to be aware of pedestrians, when going for a thai driver's licence  it one of the questions...you slow down.

Crikey, I do some dumb things in life but I would never attempt this.

I'm extremely fit, middle aged but would never attempt to cross a busy Thai highway on foot

I am unwilling to ride with anyone not diligently practicing defensive driving.

It's like they get behind the wheel and they follow rules of the road as if they were reading from a book.

This is why Elon will save many lives in Thailand, as soon as we get FSD here.

Most people, no matter which country, really should not be behind the wheel.

NO WAY can I ride with someone who never slows down in order to anticipate the upcoming potential problems that are always presenting themselves.

I mean, JUST HOW DUMB do those drivers have to be to drive this way????

I do not ride with them.

This is why I have stopped leaving my compound.

When we have FSD, then I will enjoy getting out and about.

Checking the video of the Toyota Fortuner:

a. It is clear that the white Toyota never slowed down until the point of impact.

b. Seems as if the driver might have been distracted.

c. Texting while driving could account for this. Or, some other distraction.   Clearly, the driver was NOT paying any attention to what might to directly ahead, including the deceased.

d. The video available from another source is clear that the Toyota did not slow down.  Why did it not brake until after the collision?  There could be many reasons, none of them good. Obviously very careless driving, for one.

Such a shame.

So many drivers should be banned and barred from driving, as they are not capable.

The Fortuner is a very heavy vehicle.

Does this driver possess the required skills and experience to operate it?

This is my rhetorical question.

The answer is just too obvious.

it's because thais don't have the skills on how to drive. They can even kill you and don't care. Most of thais are always drunk

No it wasn't...    the woman might not have stopped in the driver path - but she ran across the road into the path of the oncoming Fortuna - there really was nothing the Fortuna driver could have done to avoid the accident.

The only reckless actions the video shows is that of the pedestrian taking a huge risk by running across the road when there is oncoming traffic - sadly, 100% her own fault.

1) Thai's dont have driving skills.

2) Thai can kill you and don't care.

3) Most Thai's are always drunk.

If you were aiming for the holy trinity of bigoted coc£womblery you succeeded !!!
