  • Its always strong at this time of the year due to the millions of tourists needing to buy Thai baht  to spend  on their winter extravaganza (two week millionaires)

  • I prefer to ask, why isn't your home currency strengthening against the THB ?

  • Well observed. It's not the 3rd world currencies strenghtening against the US Dollar, it's the US Dollar weakening against 3rd world currencies.

If you keep your savings in gold, you will see the baht is steadily losing value.  You will be getting more baht to spend, offsetting price inflation.

Yes but the baht strengthening is eroding the gold price increase at the moment.

The rich and powerful in Thailand like to maintain a strong baht in support of their overseas investments.

When I look at exchange rates, I’m grateful my pension isn’t paid in USD. You can’t trust a six time bankrupt to have a clue in running a business financially let alone trying to comprehend the intricacies of how a countries economy works. Just look at how the idiot thinks tariffs work as prime example of his total ignorance.

Just about ALL currencies are losing value against gold (and silver).

They've probably upped the money laundering to compensate

I agree.  And I believe the money laundering is much bigger than most could imagine.  Real life 2025 example...50 yo Issan woman on dating site messaging with chinaman for 3 months, never talks on phone  (his phone camera is broken, haha),  only messages.  He convinces her to receive 300k thb into her account, then transfer to his account which he will use to marry her. She agrees, transfers take place followed by a 800k transfer.   An informed person told her she was being used as a mule and police could get her.  The chinaman profile vanished when she asked.

This was like classic money laundering.

On that same Issan soi a few houses down, a lady running a noodle soup shop, and her husband runs a motobike ice cream shop.  He died early this year.  His cousin convinced her to invest money from her husband's death, their life savings, in a quick get-rich digital gold purchase.  Pay out date came and all was quiet, the about a week later buch of folks showed up, then left. It's been kinda somber since then.   She was told she would get 281B USD. Yea, billion US Dollars.  I asked many times, are you sure this is what they said....yes, 281B USD.  Scammed of life savings.

As your examples show (and I know of some similar ones as well), these are dangerous times for the financially illiterate.

Obama, no, started high, thank you Bush, then bottomed out, but recovered, as you can only stay so low for so long.   Trump likes a weak $$$, so does exactly what he states, so no surprise.  Deal with it.

Biden, yea, loved it, and wish Harris would have won, and continued the high inflation & downfall of the USA economy.  American Dream of home ownership, now way out of reach for those that don't have.

Trump 2, wait & see, as way too early, but hopefully inflation will skyrocket, to offset exchange rate, if he succeeds in lowering any further.  2.8% COLA is nice, and hopefully get that every year onward.

Why don't you ask your hero Trump?

I like him, because he pisses everyone off, pointing out the obvious corruption.  If the last 3 elections didn't show how corrupt the system is, then you be deaf, dumb & blind.  You deserve the future  of United Socialist America.

My mother liked him (work at Trump Casino, NJ), and she's more anti social than me, so he has that going for him.

As a politician, probably the best available, but that's a really low bar.   I'd rather have Harris in the WH, but that's just 'me me me', being selfish, as what's bad for USA, is good for me, as Biden showed.

Closed the border & deportations 👍👍

Narcissist .. guilty 👎

Weak $$$ ... why, USA doesn't export anything, but oil, OK, explains that 👎

Anti CN / BEV ... short sighted for the consumer, again, favors fossil fuel & Detroit 👎

Tariffs ... too late, too little, good in theory, but no support from the consumer, as they'd rather buy inexpensive imports no matter.   Nobody cares enough to 'buy USA'.   Most USA brands come from CN or elsewhere anyway.

That he has to lead by executive order, shows his own party doesn't like him, but has to tolerate him.  If a bad mid term result, they will all turn against him publicly.   Except the few looking to the WH in 2028.

He should have never entered politics, though glad he did, exposing it is for what it is.   Unfortunately, half the voting public are too stupid to see it, and best commercial & MSM spin will win again in the future.

Because there is no direct exchange rate between our home currency and Thai baht (except for the worlds reserve currency the USD)

For the rest of us its the crunching of two pairings....for Brits as an example its {Sterling/Dollar} x {Dollar/Baht}  that equates to Sterling Baht

Movement in either pairing effects the bottom line and currently Dollar/Baht rate is crucifying all of us as it appears in every equation relating to exchange rates over the Baht.

(Substitute Sterling in equation for your own currency)

crucifying ... :cheesy:

OK, if a Brit and got here around 2004 @ 78, then yea, but that's Brexit's fault.  Or better, EU's fault for that spanking.

USD ... 25 to 40 to 45 to 28 to 38 to 31 now.  Bold #s since I've been here, so average 30-35, the past 15 years works for me.  Stay above 30 and I'm happy.  Doubt if TH will let it go below 30, for any amount of time.

God knows why you're rolling around the floor

The appreciation of the Baht against the benchmark USD is hurting every one of us currently

Been bouncing between 30 - 35 for the past 15 years.  How is now any different ?

Did you arrive during Biden administration when it hit 38 :coffee1:

I arrived, and it was almost 42 ... don't here me crying.  Plan your retirement better in your next life.    You can't take a 15-20% fluctuation in you finances ?

Even at 30, I'll still be banking half my Soc Sec every month :cheesy:

Sure there's more than a few that got here @ 25 - 29 and are happy it's 30+ :cheesy:

For me, it's ~25% hit on exchange rate, and at least 100-150% on inflation, and we know how the COLA on SS are BS.

LIFE is GOOD & LIVING the Dream

Live with your choices :coffee1:

@Chivas  Need more money, I'm sure they are hiring teachers every semester.

Because the super rich Thais are moving money overseas to invest overseas before Thailand collapses, thus they "encourage" the "controllers" of the Baht to keep it strong.  Added to this are all the large foreign criminal organisations in Thailand wishing to repatriate the "clean" Thai Baht to "safe" overseas locations.

One thing mty 30 years of Thailnd gazing has brought me is Thailand won't collapse. Long Live George !

most expat retirees are pegged by the strong THB

When I first arrived in 1997 the rate was 42 Bt/ £ , now it's....about 42 / £ . Not much has changed really , apart from a brief spike up to c. 90 / £ during the Asian financial crisis .
