Yes, that's the point they all piss about on the spot vs ready-to-go.

i'll stick to cash or debit cards in the meantime vs all this new trend crap.

I am in the West now, I haven't used cash for many years, I use my debit card and touch and go up to 2200 baht more than this I have to type in my security code, which only takes a few seconds.

My issue with qr codes is you do not know what they really contain as you input them into your phone or computer.  They are not human readable

Worrying about nothing, you check payee before pressing enter

Having used contactless card payments in Vietnam a lot this year, I've got to agree, it's quite a bit faster than the QR code scanning that's more common in Thailand.

And you needn't be carrying around your tracking device phone like a putz.

No good?

That depends if you are a bank or a customer.

From the banks viewpoint, if the QR code is used then fewer employees are required and ATMs become obsolete.

The whole system becomes automated and bank profits soar.

From the customer point of view, it becomes more difficult to rectify any errors made due to local branches disappearing.

I have never used a QR code, and have no idea how to. It’s looking like I’m going to have to learn though. Worst thing by far will be having to carry a mobile phone wherever I go.

You forget change ..... Very few people carry the exact money.

And security........ Nobody can steal from your QR code or your QR 'till'.

I do take your point, but there are scammers putting false/fake codes or even tampering with them?

What if you lost your phone? Does everyone have automatic lock turned on?

If everything is legitimate its secure. but the internet does go out sometimes?

There have been cases in the U.K. more so in car parks where you can pay by QR Code, fraudsters have been sticking false QR Codes over the original directing the money to their bank account.

Yes, the same arguments used for debit cards, credit cards and bit coin but the scams/theft keep increasing, I'm staying with cash.

Nobody can steal your money. But the government can (and will) steal your privacy and freedom. That's the whole point of digital money. They're not doing it for our benefit or convenience.

If nobody can steal your money, please explain how these scams work. It would be interesting to know?

Inefficient and annoying. I have not used cash in the EU, Japan, South Korea and North America  more than a few times since Covid. The only place I still have to regularly visit an ATM is in Thailand.  Not a fan of handling dirty money. The coins are  an annoyance.

Thai coins are simple. 1,2,5 and 10. Try UK coins, they are more than an annoyance, they are a  bloody nightmare!

I agree , since the advent of doing financial transactions on "smartphones"  the cybercrime and scams targeting such has exploded leading to huge personal and bank losses .  All these billions are used to buy crypto/convert to gold and fund the military operations of the likes of North Korea,Russia, Myanmar and more !  What was wrong with a simple Debit or Credit Card ?

How do you access your cash ?

I never reveal that to potential scammers,   but nice try..... (only joking)

I’m retired. I’m in no hurry. Scanning works well for me, in fact, better than cash. I was tired of taking one-Baht coins to the bank to change for bills. Doesn’t happen so much now, I imagine it will be even less frequent in the future. I’m already hearing about shops that are no longer accepting cash.  I can see this as a plus for business owners worried about employee theft at the till, or the problem so many seem to have when making change.

I doubt you will ever be short of work,

Problem with not accepting cash is that sometimes, for security reasons, you may not wish to be carrying either plastic or a phone, for instance if you have to leave your stuff on a beach while going for a swim. Lose some cash, who cares, lose plastic or a phone, a huge hassle. When I bought an ice cream at the little kiosk run by kids at Coogee beach in Sydney, I handed over some cash, assuming they wouldn’t take credit cards. I was amazed that they’d only accept a credit card, which I fortunately had with me, as I was doing the Bondi-Coogee walk rather than going for a swim.

Yes, there will be more and more every day. Someone else can take over though as I will retire before this Christmas.

UK coins arec1, 2, 5 , 10, 20, 50, £1 and £2. All easily distinguishable.

Are you forgetting the Thai satang coins.

How could I access your cash with out your telephone number, bank details, ATM Card etc ?

On 12/11/2025 at 2:40 PM, FritsSikkink said:

But you don't know that as a fact.

Actually the bank may not accept anything but a payment QR scan the qr code itself can upload skimmer programs to your phone

Why wouldn't you have auto lock one?

I don't think it ever occurred to me that you could (or why you would) turn off automatic locking.
