PM Anutin Dissolves House, Calls for February Elections

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dissolved the House of Representatives today, announcing a general election for the second Sunday of February. This abrupt decision follows a surprise shift by Bhumjaithai-led lawmakers toward constitutional amendment legislation, which was consequently aborted after prolonged debate. The move precludes an impending censure motion by the opposition People's bloc.

The Bhumjaithai party, under the leadership of Anutin and de facto boss Newin Chidchob, reversed its stance by endorsing a requirement for one-third of the 200 senators to approve constitutional amendments. This shift came during a joint House/Senate session after months of a legislative struggle, just before the final reading scheduled for December 26.

Anutin's dissolution of the House effectively prevents the People's bloc from filing a censure motion, which could have led to a no-confidence vote toppling the Bhumjaithai-led minority government. With less than 170 MPs in their camp, as opposed to nearly 300 from the opposition, the prime minister faced a significant risk of being ousted, reported Thai Newsroom.

Despite expectations that Anutin would dissolve the House post-approval of the charter amendment, his decision nullifies the bill altogether. This sets the stage for an election within the legally mandated 60 days, likely around the second week of February.

Key Takeaways:

  • Anutin dissolves the House and calls elections for February.
  • Surprise shift in Bhumjaithai's stance ends amendment bill.
  • Censure motion by the opposition was blocked by House dissolution.

Hilarious for a country which likes tourists so much - when there's elections we all know what this means - mass closures of bars and entertainment leaving the tourists with little to do in the evening multiple times due to advance voting - these lucky people will likely only find out about the closures when they leave their hotel on the day and find everything's closed.

The election losers will probably form the next government again.

Avoid winning at all costs or face getting banned.

Another sore loser - next please ....

Here we go again!!!

Fun  & games again...

Well, that attempt of deviating attention from the real political mess to the conflict with the Khmer got clearly out of control.

Anutin and his party has clearly proven his limits and his 15 minutes of fame are over. So we can only hope that some more able people might take over this mess and bring Thailand back onto track. The economy, tourism, export, domestic labour shortages and foreign affairs with direct neighbors are some of the bullet points on Thailand's next powerpoint presentation leading into the third decade of the millennium 😉

On vera - as the French say 😎😎

No. Dissolution of the Parliament about now & calling an election was the People's Party's condition for Anutin forming a government.

Recent polls had the P'sP around 30% and all others around 10% or less. Which should mean that the P'sP gets first go at forming a government post-election, but it will then lose out to most of the others ganging up on it ...

Which reincarnation of the Thaksin clan will appear this time?

Interesting thaksim will be in the bangkok hilton still and with the last election most people voted for the orange party then after the results everything changed .Lets see what happens  next year

We live in interesting times ,i believe that is the right expression.

Last week a very determent Anutin vowed to fight corruption.

Maybe just better that the army steps in again, at least a lot of people will accept that i think.

Next week Ganja will be illegal again?

Come to Thailand for the great food and scenery, overstay because of all the excitement in politics!

Should we be surprised absolutely not this was always going to happen ! Personally I hope the people’s party will storm the elections in February and this time will be allowed to form a government in waiting however I’m sure the old boys network will do everything in their power to stop this happening it’s time for the dinosaurs to be put out to grass !

Thailand desperately needs a new crop of young progressive creative leaders who are capable of leading it into the future, instead of the current crop of regressive dinosaurs who are keeping Thailand locked into the past.

The progressive political party won the most seats at the last election in 2023, but was blocked from forming a government by conservative forces in the military-appointed Senate.

A rather astonishing bit of continued regression. And we certainly know who is behind it. Woe are the people of Thailand.

Oddly, any positive news also boosts the value of the Baht.

It appears there is some currency manipulation going on over in the Bank of Thailand.
