Two foreign tourists have been arrested in Chiang Mai after allegedly vandalising a hotel room and causing losses of more than 200,000 baht, police said on 25 December 2025. The suspects, both German nationals, were detained after fleeing the property without paying compensation and have been handed over for legal proceedings. Police confirmed the arrests followed formal complaints from the hotel.

The case stems from a stay at the premises on Nimmanhaemin Road in the Suthep Subdistrict of Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province. According to investigators, the two suspects booked Room 509 on the fifth floor from 18 to 21 December 2025. The booking was made on 18 December 2025.

Police said the tourists became dissatisfied with the hotel’s services during their stay and entered into a dispute with hotel staff. In what officers described as an act of anger, the pair allegedly damaged hotel property. The damage was later assessed at more than 200,000 baht.

After the incident, the suspects left the accommodation without compensating the hotel. The hotel subsequently filed a formal complaint with investigators at Phuping Police Station. The complaint triggered an investigation into the alleged vandalism and the suspects’ whereabouts.

Pol. Col. Sinothai Lilittham, Superintendent of Phuping Ratchanivet Police Station, said arrest warrants were issued by the Chiang Mai Kwaeng Court. Acting on the warrants, police officers located the suspects at another hotel in the Wat Ket Subdistrict of Mueang Chiang Mai District. The arrest team presented the warrants, detained both individuals, and informed them of the charges and their legal rights.

The two suspects were identified as Ms. Linda, aged 21, and Mr. Nikita, aged 38, both German nationals, with family names withheld. Both face charges related to property damage. Police confirmed that the arrests were carried out jointly by senior officers and the investigation team from Phuping Ratchanivet Police Station.

Khoasod reported that investigators said the suspects were transferred to Phuping Ratchanivet Police Station for further legal action. Police did not disclose additional details about potential court proceedings but confirmed that the case will proceed in accordance with Thai law. Authorities reiterated that foreign nationals are subject to the same legal obligations as Thai citizens when staying in the country.

  • These two are about as bright as a bucket of rocks, travel to a foreign country, intentionally commit a crime and get locked up for being emotionally weak and stunted.

  • 200,000 but damages yeah right!

  • Nikita, a traditional German first name. Just a question on the side; what is worth 200,000 baht in this hotel room?

That'll take about a year, with them not being allowed to exit the country.

Less the cost of the items than the cost of the repairs?

200 000 thb damage? no way

"Police said the tourists became dissatisfied with the hotel’s services during their stay and entered into a dispute with hotel staff"

So why didn't the couple just leave the hotel?

It seems to come in spurts and apparently, this December is the Germans' turn in the barrel.

They will complete the legal case, pay fines, spend time in the calaboose, and when all is settled, they will be released to go free & fly back to Germany.

At which point they will be re arrested for no visa. Thai police & immigration really enjoy doing that last little bit to make their trip truly memorable.

Obviously the 200,000 is an ambit claim. The real damage is probably closer to 75,000 Baht. The hotel will accept 100,000 Baht compensation to dismiss the charges, with the police getting 25,000 Baht.

Appalling, and stupid, behaviour by the Germans. I suspect the hotel would settle for 50-75k baht.

The hotel should settle for two years incarceration.

Exactly - but they probably paid up front and demanded their money back. Like most younger people - totally unaware that the laws and rules in Thailand are not the same as back in their home country.

I recall vividly that video where a US woman was filming some blokes doing something and one of them said to stop recording them. She said she was exercising her Constitutional rights - and he said this is not America.  She kept filming - so he walked over and knocked her out - the camera kept rolling as he walked away. Funny - but I do hope she recovered OK.

All Germans should be banned from the Thailand. Typical violent Behavior.

Unfortunately that is a common thing in some nationalities -  but there are much worse than Germans.  I note that Japanese are at the other end of the spectrum.

I guess they also added the missed revenue due to the nights the room not being available for booking during repairs
Can be costly in the middle of the high season

I wish but recently too many criminals left the country despite under investigations !

Should not happen !

There isn't a hotel room in CM with 200k thb of furnishings!

The average room is decorated out in under 5k thb with a fancy hotel creeping up to 10k thb if it has a fancy mattress.
