Also, from a perspective of interaction between Thai's and foreigners - yes, I'd call Bangkok very normal - we (Foreigners) get treated there with the same level of indifference Thai's treat each other - we are judged on individual merit, we are nothing special, we are nothing negative - It has been easy to integrate with Thai friends and live what I call a 'normal life'... so yes - Bangkok is about 'as normal' as I could find in Thailand.

The city itself is not so normal of course - its vibrant, lively, chaotic in areas and has a lot to offer - but that depends on what you are comparing 'normal' to.

As I age I'd like the idea of moving somewhere quieter, less chaotic - but I think thats quite normal too.

I agree - Bangkok is not cheap.... You can't get anything I'd consider liveable for 8000 baht a month in Bangkok.

But, with a house relatively central, a car, a motorcycle, lots of friends around both Thai and Western - I find life there very normal - but, yes, Bangkok is no longer cheap.

Meanwhile - I would not find an 8000 baht condo normal anywhere in Thailand - it would be too small.

The last Condo's I had in Bangkok were 120sqm, followed by 180sqm - I'm guessing anything at 8000 baht a month elsewhere is small (<30 sqm) - I'd find that not normal.

35 sqm. I am a minimalist, so I am quite comfortable in that environment. Bigger places just mean more to clean and maintain.

My GF has a house in the village, we only go there for 1-2 days.

Bangkok is a great city as is Chiang Mai.
