CHIANG MAI -- Police are hunting a British driver who fled the scene of a fatal accident in Chiang Mai last night.

San Sai police called to a section of the Chiang Mai - Doi Saket Road in front of the Lak Pan housing estate found an overturned Isuzu pick-up blocking the road and a Mercedes Benz beside the road, reported Thairath

The driver of the Benz had gone but police found a passport in the name of Briton Simon Wellings (transliterated from Thai) aged 45.

Two Thai women had apparently been thrown from the pick-up and lay dead on the tarmac. They were named as Pataraporn,54,of Sankampaeng, Chiang Mai, and Chanthiang Changprakop, 50 (no address supplied).

A Mitsubishi Pajero had driven into the debris of the pick-up and the driver Sujit Simakun,59, suffered minor injuries and was sent to hospital.

Pongsak Reuankaew of the San Sai police said that initial evidence indicated that the Benz had rear ended the pick-up causing it to flip and roll multiple times throwing out the two women. He added that they suspect the foreign driver is injured and in a state of shock following the collision.

I bet when they find him, he will not be allowed to refuse breath test, or refuse to go to a police station.

He will get banged up straight away, no bail nothing.

He did wrong so should be punished.

Now we will see the 2 tier Thai system working.

Lets hope so, people need to learn not to flee from accidents, bail is something most people get if they have a good insurance. I got bail bond on mine. But I would not flee from an accident.

But strange your not condemning him for fleeing an accident most foreigners would do so if the guy was Thai. Are you are a Brit too by any chance and is that the reason why you don't think its bad that he runs from an accident ?

I don't care who someone is Thai Dutch, Brit.. whatever.. you just don't flee an accident.

I am condemning him for fleeing, i stated he did wrong, in my book that is condemning him.

Do you know WHY drivers flee the scene of an accident here?

because they can and there is little done about it

The Merc must have been travelling at quite a speed,to rear end and flip the pick up,

2 people are dead RIP,so lets hope they catch him soon and throw the full extent of

the law at him.

regards worgeordie

He won’t be able to go very far without his passport so when he does turn up what kind of penalty is he likely to face?

Maybe because they might get lynched/killed by third-parties, friends, relatives etc....

I spent a few few years working in East Africa, where I did quite alot of driving. If I had been in a prang there, I would have been reluctant to hang around at the scene, maybe a drive to the nearest police station is safest? (When I worked in India, farang employees were strictly forebidden from driving at all).

"Now we will see the 2 tier Thai system working. "

The two tiered system regarding comments following (apparent, alleged) criminal behavior is, as always, alive and well.

I wonder if the farang can just say "sorry" and join the monkhood so that all is forgotten and forgiven ...

That seems to work for the rich Thai Benz driver ....

I'm sorry, but that monkhood comes at a very high rate these days....its not just a salutation and off to Navarna you go...there's loads of Thai Baht involved in this submission to Buddhist teachings and concentration on monastic principles.

As for Thai bashing, most of what I read is pretty much general commentary regarding variations of cultures, ethics, morals and basic principles. Doing a "runner," as its commonly referred to as, is the most common principle held by Thai drivers involved in accidents it seems.

Regardless, the driver of the Benz, (whoever he/she) was, will no doubt turn up soon and face the music so to speak. Lets hope that the unfortunate two ladies who lost their lives to this accident will be remembered and honored by their families and friends. Sad day for both women and family for sure.
