British Benz driver sought after fatal Chiang Mai smash

CHIANG MAI -- Police are hunting a British driver who fled the scene of a fatal accident in Chiang Mai last night.

San Sai police called to a section of the Chiang Mai - Doi Saket Road in front of the Lak Pan housing estate found an overturned Isuzu pick-up blocking the road and a Mercedes Benz beside the road, reported Thairath

The driver of the Benz had gone but police found a passport in the name of Briton Simon Wellings (transliterated from Thai) aged 45.

Two Thai women had apparently been thrown from the pick-up and lay dead on the tarmac. They were named as Pataraporn,54,of Sankampaeng, Chiang Mai, and Chanthiang Changprakop, 50 (no address supplied).

A Mitsubishi Pajero had driven into the debris of the pick-up and the driver Sujit Simakun,59, suffered minor injuries and was sent to hospital.

Pongsak Reuankaew of the San Sai police said that initial evidence indicated that the Benz had rear ended the pick-up causing it to flip and roll multiple times throwing out the two women. He added that they suspect the foreign driver is injured and in a state of shock following the collision.

Must be one of the very very few that actually travel with their passport......I thought usually the BIB would have a pic of the passport bio page up by now as well if they has serious concerns on criminality..

Why presume fleeing, ..BIB have opined is in shock and injured.

Although not unreasonable it is not even established if the driver and the passport holder are one in the same.

I keep at all times a copy of my Passport with up-to-date 90 day report copy, both in the Pickup and in the car, the Pickup at this moment has just left Champon going to Ranong, and I am on my PC 50 odd km north west of BKK..

Oh yes.. I hate Brits.. i forgot.

No my chip is that it seems that when a Thai does something everyone is falling over themselves condemning it and generalizing but when its a foreigner the responses are totally different. There is just a lot of Thai bashing here so its good to hold up a mirror once in a while.

Should I have said farang instead of Brit.. DELETED? I would have come down just as hard on a Dutch guy and would have called it a Dutch thing just to hold up a mirror here. DELETED.

Say it how it is. He probably fled the scene because he was drunk and wanted to give himself time to sober up.

Chiang Mai police looking for British driver in fatal crash



CHIANG MAI: -- Chiang Mai police said they are looking for a British national whose passport was found in the badly damaged Mercedes-Benz that crashed into a pickup truck killing two Thai women before midnight Wednesday

Police arriving at the crash scene on Chiang Mai – Sansai road said they found only the passport book in the car.

It was not immediately known he was also injured and was admitted to hospital, or unhurt and fled the scene.

Sansai district police officer Pol Lt Col Pongsak Ruenkaew said police were alerted of the fatal crash at 11.30 pm and that two persons were killed.

At the scene, they found a pickup truck with Chiang Mai license plate lying upside down in the middle of the road.

Two women were dead by the overturned truck.

A white Mercedes-Benz car rested on the side of the road and a damaged third vehicle, a Pajero van parked nearby.

Police said driver of the van was identified and was admitted to Sansai district hospital.

Only the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was not located. Only a passport book of a British man was left in the car.

Maybe because they might get lynched/killed by third-parties, friends, relatives etc....

I spent a few few years working in East Africa, where I did quite alot of driving. If I had been in a prang there, I would have been reluctant to hang around at the scene, maybe a drive to the nearest police station is safest? (When I worked in India, farang employees were strictly forebidden from driving at all).

I don't know if anyone's already posted this thought up yet or not but, <deleted> how do we know that the named Brit was even driving the car at the time of the reported accident? Second perhaps the car was stolen and the driver perhaps wasn't the reported infamous "Brit."

I'm sorry, but that monkhood comes at a very high rate these days....its not just a salutation and off to Navarna you go...there's loads of Thai Baht involved in this submission to Buddhist teachings and concentration on monastic principles.

As for Thai bashing, most of what I read is pretty much general commentary regarding variations of cultures, ethics, morals and basic principles. Doing a "runner," as its commonly referred to as, is the most common principle held by Thai drivers involved in accidents it seems.

Regardless, the driver of the Benz, (whoever he/she) was, will no doubt turn up soon and face the music so to speak. Lets hope that the unfortunate two ladies who lost their lives to this accident will be remembered and honored by their families and friends. Sad day for both women and family for sure.
