Nana - haven for foreign mafia doesn't look like Thailand any more

BANGKOK: -- Influential Thai news group Thai Rath has described Soi Nana in Bangkok as a haven for what they describe as foreign mafia.

They said that the area is increasingly unrecognizable as a part of Thailand with all the foreigners apparently allowed to set up businesses in the area by corrupt authorities.

They described a place of different skin colors, hair colors and a wide variety of nations - but these are not tourists spending money in the kingdom.

These are would be immigrants trying to scratch a living in Thailand, they said in an unclear article that appeared to be a mishmash of news, comment and feature.

They mentioned several nationalities - mostly middle easterners - as having been allowed to openly operate in the area.

And said that now the police were beginning to crackdown after metropolitan chief Sanit Mahathavorn has got on the case after widespread corruption in the red light district.

They reported the arrest of nationals from Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

They cited largely unspecified information that bribes of 30,000 baht were being demanded from illegal people to trade in the area. Some were involved in human trafficking and trades like selling meat, they said.

They commented that one Syrian man had been shaken down for 600,000, a story that has been reported in previous news stories.

And said that a confusing situation has developed where cops were acting outside the law.

Nana (Soi4) is a place of happiness. Many are cheerful and smiling there. Nana is dancing and celebrating. And many thais ( police included) earn good money there.

Guess the OP mean Soi 3 and the area behind soi 5 ( little Arabia).

Why the OP does not complain also about chinatown?

Many Chinese operate there.

Ahhhhhh, Chinese.

Guess that is a different kettle of fish?

Not at all like The Nation, then.

Anyway the short version of the article is pretty much exactly what the common opinion is among Thaivisa members of the Soi 3 area.

(That it's a complete zoo, and police doesn't seem to be doing anything about all the obvious riff-raff.)

Only in Thailand..... I must congratulate the individuals who have destroyed most of lower Sukhumvit right up to the old Onnut Beer garden..... Well done, you never would of believed that closing most of the old expat bars, pavement bars, food stalls, fruit stalls, restaurants, discos and just about anything that farangs and locals enjoyed and made a decent living from.......... i never thought this kind of competence/ incompetence was possible here....... How sad that the once great night life of Bangkok has been destroyed by these individuals and being replaced with what ?   Overpriced rubbish that nobody wants.........As for Soi 3 up to soi 7........ Allah's got a bar !!!!!!!!

Cops operating outside the law.:cheesy:

Good heavens whatever next?

Why are the hands of the "prisoner" in the OP blurred out ? I mean everyone can see he is in handcuffs why blur it out ?
Anti Sado-masochist fetish promotion...like the anti beer promotion maybe ?

It only took 15 years to figure this out? Somebody has been asleep at the wheel, for a very long time.

Maybe they should take a good hard look at Sai 2 in South Pattaya as well. Looks like you are in a middle eastern city.

There are only a few business signs that are in the Thai language. 90% are in Arabic or some kind of Indian language.

It's easy to let this happen over many years and very difficult to remove this blight on an otherwise, nice Thai Town.

What is it with the Bleeding Heart Left Wing Brigades. I say if you want to live beside Arabs or Africans, then move to Zimbabwe or Baghdad.

Because he has hands involved in dirty business, and it would be obscene to show them.

the cops know there is not going to be any consequence if they break the law, why not if it lines the pockets? This is the norm here, it's a very 3rd world mentality. Writing tickets for purposes of gaining a commission is the very fabric of encouraging corruption. It's built in, a great reason to become a cop. Being a cop has nothing to do with helping and or protecting the Thai people.

Could it be because those "Chinese" people are the decedents of people who arrived in the 1850's and are actually Thai citizens?

As long as government officials have a hand in their "businesses", nothing can be done to eradicate this problem.

But yet Middle eastern countries dont allow anyone in to compete  - Dubai even supposedly full of foreign investment but a front for Arab mafia tightly controlled by the Police and their thugs. As for Saudi and Kuwait - dont get me started I had 12 years there!!

Yes many are, but there also many chinese citizens, which doing legal and illegal business here. What you think who serves the millions of Chinese who fly in every year?  There are a lot of chinese Bustour owners, hotel owners, restaurant owners, gift shop owners, tourguides and also sexshow organizers for chinese only.

There is definitely a big change in the clientele of the JW Marriot from around 5 or 6 years ago compared to 20 years ago.  I think it has been a big middle eastern influx for quite a few years.  They only just noticed this?

Funny... From soi 13 to soi 3 has been cleared of all the things that made sukhumvit.. Sukhumvit and the cheap food went with it. Go to soi 5 you can't get into Foodland for all of the Easteners enjoying the only cheap and good food on soi 5 (Took Lat Dee Restaurant) But even that menu has essentially gone Halal. The rest of the new restaurants are all being opened by Middle Easterners selling expensive seafood that I never see anyone buy. More like storefronts for illegal activity. All I can say there sure is a bumper crop of expensive middle Eastern and African girls sitting and standing waiting for a dog with a bone.

Welcome to the real world of globalized mafia activities. Where there is room for one, there is room for more. Would be interesting to watch who is the winner that takes it all. Probably some guys in uniform.
