What is the best VPN for download speeds in Thailand

I have been using Cloudflare DNS over TLS for the past two months over my WAN interface.  I have three VPN tunnels for streaming media and for privacy concerns.  I am not seeing any evidence where the services are using your DNS location to determine your geo location. They are only using your WAN endpoint IP address that is reported from sites like iplocation.net, whatismyip.com, etc.  When I do an ipleak test (dnsleak.com, ipleak.net), it reports my end point as being the location of my VPN server and the DNS location as the Cloudflare Data Center in Bangkok.  No issues with the streaming services or sites that check your geo location so far.

I have been researching how to configure firewall rules to route DNS over the same VPN tunnel I am connected to on pfSense though.  I can get it to work if I only have one OpenVPN tunnel.  But since I have three tunnels, DNS Resolver (Unbound), selects one of the three VPN tunnels in random order.  I found a possible solution on a forum. Need time when no one is using the internet to experiment with it though.

Cloudfare's DNS servers are fast but they do not spoof your geographic location; sites that you visit will still know that you are in Thailand.

Ok, but, they offer a more private browsing experience.  Right?

In layman's terms, how do they do that?

isn’t the reason that Cloudfare's DNS servers are not giving away your geo location because you are using it with a VPN? The behavior that i’m seeing with the free version of Cloudfare's DNS is that when I use it without a VPN that websites like whatsmyip show me as being in Thailand. And when i test with ipleak.net it shows my DNS servers as being in Singapore.

I have been meaning to ask this question for a while.  I will not start a new thread for it because it's all to do with VPN's.

My router has a function that allows me to create a VPN that I can access from anywhere.  It's a common feature on a lot of routers, so it's nothing special, and I think you can even set one up through Windows.

My qestions are:  once set up, and you access your router from a remote location, does all your browsing use the IP address of the remote router? (the one in my house, in my home country, that I have set up the VPN on)

Next question:  is there any security issues with this?

Next question:  once connected to my home country router, are download and upload usage counted towards my home's internet account, with VPN traffic flowing through it?

I am currently paying for a VPN, and I am very sastified with their speeds and reliability, but am I paying for something that I can just do myself, through a router I have in my home country, and couldn't anyone do this through a friend or relative's router, back in their home country?

When connected to Cloudflare DNS, ipleak.net only reported the DNS in a location that was the same as the VPN connection. But dnsleak.com reported the same server plus the C.F. DNS in Thailand. But I now realize my test was flawed and will retest tomorrow. I had also implemented DNS over HTTPS in Firefox. It will take priority over DNS over TLS running on the router. Will report back later with results.

There is a Configuration setting on the server that controls the connection. It may depend on the firmware. On Asuswrt-Merlin, one setting will use the VPN connection of the server for all your internet browsing. The other setting allows you to use your local WAN interface for internet browsing yet still creates a connection to the server so you can access resources on the remote server.

Security issues would be nominal. The sites you visit may be logged on the dnsmasq logs on the router. I never thought of this until now. I will have to test this one.

Plans vary greatly by internet provider. But good point to check the data plan limits and the impact of the VPN connection to bandwidth.

Also, is there someone at the remote location than can power cycle it or help if there is a problem?

One good point of this solution is the ability to avoid blocks some streaming media services and other sites have on known shared VPN servers. You will appear as coming from a residential IP address.

On the downside, you will loose the flexibility to connect to different geo locations for those out of market football games for example.

Luckily for us, the VPN market is very competitive which helps keep prices low. The monthly costs of some one or two year plans is very low.

Good question and interesting pros and cons. Something I also considered doing at one point.

Here is an example of how to configure the server and client devices

I have just purchased NordVPN, 108$ for 3 years.

My Express VPN is soon due for renewal anyway so I though I try out Nord.

So far so good, getting download speeds at app 6mb on torrent files, Express was seldom over 2mb, both set at Singapore IP address.

You can use Nord on 6 devices, Express is only 3.

PureVPN is best, and superior customer service. Discounts and promos all the time. Vast choice of global servers. Can optimize for your use (P2P, streaming, anonymity, etc).

As some people have written here, nordvpn seems to work fine from speed perspective. For me it is the main reason why I'm planning to buy it. Although from my personal perspective couldn't tell you yet which one would be the best.

I've been using NordVPN for two years now and up until end of last year speeds were solid. I am on a 50/25Mbit connection at home and I used to max out my bandwidth when being connected to a Thailand or Singapore VPN Server. However, since beginning of this year speeds have dropped significantly at any time of the day. Nowadays I get 25Mbit downstream through Singapore VPN and less than 5Mbit when being connected to a Thailand VPN server. I have reproduced this in my office as well.

However, when using ExpressVPN, I can still max out my bandwidth both at home and in the office. NordVPN has never been particularly strong in terms of speed but I am seriously considering to move away from NordVPN and to sign up with ExpressVPN. It goes without saying that I did speak to the NordVPN support team and that we tried all kinds VPN protocols and other setups.

I am just surprised to see that no one else here seems to have these problems as everyone is raving about their speeds.

Can you tell me if it is possible with NordVpn to get different IP addresses for each country ? Can you choose an IP in a list ? Or you always have the same IP for this country ?

And what about other VPN ? Any allowing to change IP for a specific country ?

Thank you.

I do not know if you can get a list of specific IP addresses for each country.

It is however possible to select specific servers with Nordvpn. I sent them a mail in which I told them I could not connect to a streaming app in my “home country”. They mailed me back with information about specific server numbers I should try. They worked from day one and I have used them a lot.

All servers got numbers. Those are not shown for “fastest server”. But if you search like #100 etc. you will see which countries got a server with that number.

In order to get any good use of this info I suggest you contact Nordvpn first as otherwise just a server number might mean nothing.

Yes, Ivacy allows that.

Also good for all UK Tv channels

I read Ivacy doesn't allow Netflix. Not a problem as Netflix works in TH normally but the content is behind my UK account.

Do you need to use some sort of app together with Ivacy if you want to watch UK channels live or isn't that possible?

No you just use the Ivacy app or program on PC it works equally well on either.

well I can give you two; access to UK website videos, such as Sky sports, and two, access to the full range of Netfix movies that are not available on Thai Netflix. I also log in to the UK government websites using VPN. Oh, and BBC iPLayer podcasts that are not available here.

Thank you, I think i understand. Netflix is not offered here. That is strange to me but ok netflix. I wonder why does it matter where you are when you want to watch your internet based movie subscription? I suppose that is just their policy.

I gotta say i watch whatever i damn well please. It is all out there, available. No vpn needed here as no isp are snooping around. I respect what other folks do but just sayin.

Netflix is offered in Thailand and with a lot of great content some of which is not available in other countries.  You don't watch with the same sound and video quality as Netflix.  If you want to see all Netflix content for all countries go to UNOGS. You can also get VPN's that do TOR.

you cannot access all Worldwide websites and services from a Thai isp.  Netflix is in Thailand, just  a slightly different set of movies.

I can tell you from personal experience ExpressVPN is to be avoided. I would get dropped regularly. NordVPN, on the other hand, has been rock steady for me.

I find Express VPN to be very reliable.  Have you done a leak test on NordVPN.

People use a VPN for bit torrenting, porno sites and as a additional layer of security from cyber criminals.
