Tom, given all the positives you state you possess then perhaps your "depression" itself needs some investigation as a possible clinical state?

Drs only want to make one take pills, and in my case those pills made me impotent. I stopped taking them as they didn't work anyway. I don't think I was actually clinically depressed, but my life sucked.

A friendly girl works far better than medicine, IMO.

Thanks for the advice , I do try and keep busy and have a few hobby's but I made the mistake of building my house in a fairly rural location and its a 140km round trip to the nearest large city so going to the cinema or other activities other than rural country side one’s  are not an easy daily option.

Add to that where I live there are very few foreigners around and the ones that I come across locally , seem to want to keep themselves to themselves . So most of my friends are online friends.

Your never to old for gaming. car racing or learn to fly in one of the flight simulators

Geez you must be really old. DVDs died when Netflix arrived

Sounds ageist to me.

To watch Netflix one needs an internet connection. Why, oh why do some assume everyone has an internet connection?

Soooo, go sit in the naughty corner and repeat 10,000 times "Not everyone has an internet connection".

Before asking me how I'm posting on here, the library does not allow one to settle in with a cup of tea and a bikkie to watch movies after hours.

Sounds like the sort of things I go out of the way NOT to do.

Flight stockings, while unattractive fashion wise, are also helpful.

Not when I buy the hello kitty ones and wear them with pink hotpants and a crop top.

I usually fly Korea Air if you want to see....

Sounds good to me. I didn't want to live in LOS to talk to farangs. If that was important, I'd have stayed in a western country.

I havent had an English conversation in five days.

Ditto! In fact if it wasn't on the phone or in writing I it's usually several months at a time.

My entire Thai household speak perfectly good English.

Im sure they do though for day to day use, are you going to have a conversation with them over the philosophical differences between St. Anthanasius and St. Arius that eventually culminated in the Nicene Creed? (●'◡'●)(●'◡'●)(●'◡'●)(●'◡'●)(●'◡'●)

Here cut and paste: "If some English speaking dude wanted to talk to me about that on a beautiful day, I would cut him off and go for a bike ride"

IMHO beliefs in an afterlife or reincarnation are rather pathetic cries for relevance and meaning. There is no factual evidence to support them. Only myths and legends.

When an anaesthetist renders me unconscious for routine surgery every six months, the interval between going under and waking up in the recovery room is a total blank for me. No dreams, visions or perceptions. It's what I imagine death to be like - the absence of everything.

We only get one life, so we should make the most of it. For dust thou art, and to dust you shall return.

The cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman has some interesting videos on youtube. He is writing mathematical formulas describing consciousness, after studying neuroscience and AI he has come to the conclusion that the basis for everything is consciousness, what is perceived isn't the truth, things aren't real they are conscious agents or avartas like the symbol on your computer screen denoting your email inbox. The illusion covers the truth because the truth would hinder survival. Space time isn't real either, it is your interface for conscious agents to appear in. Different species have different interfaces and so different perceived 'realities', the bat sees the world in echos, the snake in infra red, pigeons see far more different colours than we can imagine, dogs see in black and white etc. nothing is real it only appears to be. People with synesthesia can hear shapes and taste colour, some autistic people see numbers as objects or landscapes, their interface has evolved further but it still isn't the truth which can never be known by us.

That's funny. There is almost the same thread running under "The Golden Years" in the "Health" sub-forum.
Therefore, can't say much more here than I already said there.

Quite a few mental remedies have been offered here, ranging from "You are as old as you feel", "Look foreward, not backward", "Live for today" etc etc.
All fine and good, but all of this doesn't change the fact that the clock is ticking (and ticking faster the older one gets).

We can apply a fresh coat of paint over an old chair, but under the paint is still the same old chair as before.
I remain: Getting old "sucks". More so for males than females.

You say: Getting old "sucks", More for males than females.  I disagree. Guys like Sylvester Stalone, George Cloney, ect are still considered attractive/handsome at their age. Few women age gracefully and the guys can take viagra/testosterone to be able to keep performing sexually. Also can workout , eat well, take other suppliments to keep healthy/vibrant longer. Stalone is 73 and looks great. Yes we all don't have his money but we can do some of the things he does to stay vibrant.

He doesn't look like that from sitting at a keyboard or a beer bar  all day long, you have to work at staying fit/youthful.

I am afraid of the day I have to admit I am old. I cling to life as a baby to a breast not wanting to let it go even if it had enough.

I am 62 , play squash every week and I do realise the toll on my body is too much, but the day I stop will be very hard to accept. I hope for many more years but I don’t forget to live today.

I for sure did stupid things in my live but I probably would do them again on a second chance. So no regrets and immensely thankful for the opportunity.

Although my Thai wife speaks fairly good English I have not really talked to her much about my thoughts on getting old / the downward slope . But on the odd occasions when I have brought up the subject, her reaction like many times is to say , you think too much . I then reply that us British are born thinkers and forward planners and its some thing I can’t stop doing , its just a genetic curse ????

Some times I wonder what it would have been like to have been born a Thai , where thinking too much and constantly planning ahead and worrying appears not to be part of their normal brain function . My wife also loves to use to use a phrase at the drop of a hat  ( that tends to infuriate me ) and that is ….  My pen rai ????

In your opinion how much does you wife / partners support and understanding play in your attempt to stay positive about getting old .

there are wifes that moan on about getting old, and there are wifes that never mention age, only moan about health when they should have gone to the Docter last week, and lead a happy life.

I am sure that moaning about getting old just accelerates the process while at the same time the perception of waiting for that day drags on longer than just getting on with your life and make time fly..

When missus brings up the subject, I mention that I am not old but nevertheless was in university when she was born, (could mention something that happened together with the first love of my life as well but that would not improve her mood, I think).
Usually that ends the deliberation on the subject.

Kerry Packer died temporarily on on a hospital operating table.

They managed to bring him back and he described death as nothingness. No pearly gates, no fire and brimstone, no being reunited with deceased loved ones just a blank nothing.

Well..if Kerry bought shares in heaven on his brief sojourn he sure as hell wouldn't disclose any tax cuts that he managed to negotiate whilst he was there.
