Lolz, there is a specific word for “lend” in Thai, “Yuem hai” or something, but yeah, they’re not great at repayments

Sent from my FisherPrice telephone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

The ethnic Malays of Malaysia have that reputation too.

Mahathir describes Malays as lazy and untrustworthy

The ethnic Chinese business community in Malaysia often avoid granting credit to Malay businesses because of their very poor repayment track record.

The government often give advanced payments to Malay contractors to help them but very often they would spend the money on some luxuries instead of on material and equipment. Very often, many jobs go unfinished and ethnic Chinese contractors have to replace them to finish the jobs.

I met an exemplary Taxi driver tonight.  I liked him.

The Thai (snip) taxi driver before him  who didn't want to make a u-turn, not so much.

"Lend" translates as "give" in Thai. I have loaned Thais money but I didn't expect it to be returned. Rarely have I been surprised. Just another aspect of Thai culture that you have to accept and live with.

Yes i think we have all learned the hard way.

Even after reading many people’s experience on here I (wrongly) went with my gut feel and put my trust in my “in laws” to pay back the money I lent them (and I did express it as a loan not a gift). I guess I was doing it as a test not only for them but myself too as it wasn’t a life changing amount to me. Not surprisingly they failed but still feel “bad and worry” that they haven’t  paid it back despite handing it on to their son to buy a motorbike for “work” even when they had the money to pay back. That’s just their compulsive lying trait kicking in.

Even more surprising is why they don't understand why I don’t make contributions to their household any more apart from the usual food donations.

Is it cultural or just greed? I think it’s a bit of both tbh. Sadly their greed has probably cost them more in the long run because I no longer feel obliged to help them out here and there. But of course that won’t change their mindset.......

Yinn, whether you are genuine or no, I can tell you I do. Never by another group of people have I been brought to tears through generosity of spirit. Many farang are based in tourist areas and might not actually have real Thai friends as equals, often garnering their views through their other half, extended family, unfriendly immigration, what the 'government' is doing, bar talk, unscrupulous landlords, tat they read on here, whatever. Also bear in mind that where some Brits are concerned at least, their type of humour can often be mistaken as negativity... Americans often also misinterpret.

Sure, there are some absolute dodgy, ignorant types and one can get shafted in a new york minute - and aspects of culture may come across as superficial etc - but, broken down in a ditch in the middle of nowhere, there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be. Amazing people really.

Thais are okay, just like people anywhere. Good and bad everywhere. I do find them a bit boring though, and I don't like the way they do things a lot of the time. I voted with my feet and I left 7 years ago. No regrets. Still visit every two months for various reasons and it's best for me. I wouldn't want to live there all year round.

Naw Yinn, in the West, the tiny number of right wing Yobs like murderous  Nazi ideology. The educated left wing elites and their millions of lumpen followers like murderous Socialism. The great bulk of us in the middle just try to make a living.

IMO Yinn, Religion breeds more violence, hatred, and bigotry than any political group/regime.  Nazi's are just one of the outcomes.

Religion preaches to people that their "way" is the right way and others who do not follow are going against "God" .

Thankfully Buddhism does not teach these mythological beliefs.

Agree. To much problem with religion. And race also I think.

i research this neo nazi today. It not say about religion. Is Christian? They hate everyone? but Jewish religion the most?

Is very complicated. I try to understand it, but can not yet. Also have Christian  KKK etc. They hate African people. Quite shocking.

Do the member TVF hate the Indian because Hindu? So many member hate them so much. I think more than Chinese. The Indian people I meet before was very lovely and polite.

i not understand that one either, why so much. The Buddha was from India/Nepal.

Um, yinn, if you leave Wikipedia and do the research you will realize that at least in the United States, in a country of 330 million people, you can count the number of real white supremacists using a clicker.

It's really not a popular ideology among the normal people crowd. Meanwhile a candidate for president of the United States at one point in his life went to the Soviet Union and praised it. Can you imagine if someone was running for president and had praised Nazi Germany? Who would have thunk it.

Hi yinn. Hoover was a private citizen in that picture after his presidency. And then came back and denounced the Nazis.

But nice try.

People are people everywhere. That means gossiping, backbiting, jealousy, power trips, dislike, greed, decency, happiness, friendliness and violence. From the Monkees of lopburi, to the salons of Washington DC, every primate puts their pants on, one leg at a time, everyone dies, and everybody pays something in taxes, although some pigs are more equal than others. But even Uncle Joe died choking and soaked in his own natursekt.

so I have this sweetheart of an auntie that makes me my cha manao everyday, sometimes two, and of course, there are the usual auntie hanger ons from the neighborhood. One day magically appearing on a side street is a fancy food cart in the little cart  area with a nice plastic lightup sign and modern design, credit card machine and an iPad,  and a cute chick blasting out crab fried rice. That's it, crab fried rice. 3 sizes, small medium and large, 100 150b and 200 baht. Made with a nice portion of fat Brown tasty crab meat, not even some of the crappy crumbly crab you see, but some good hunks. Just to jump ahead of the story, it's damn tasty. and the portions are huge, the medium would feed probably three Thai people, so it's just right for me.

Anyway, the other day I grab some of this stomach saver, and I walk around the corner and go to buy a Chao manao. one of the Aunties hanging around spies my bag with the food in it, points and asks cow fat poO? Chai. Ehhhh, one hunnet baht? No 150. Ayyeeeeee, paeng!!!! She then proceeds to machine gun rant to my Chao manao lady who of course feeds her ammo with appropriate ehhhhhs rising tone, why don't you make up the conversation in your own brain since I heard words like paeng, poO rising tone, hiso, ehhhh, hia, eehhhhhhhh, paeng mak, may aroi, ehhhhhhh, falang, and of course the ranting auntie turns to me now and then says paeng! to which I respond paeng! I would guess the upshot of the conversation is that this young millennial Thai girl with her fancy cart and high falang prices in pakanon here has got some panties in a wad.

So I guess I'm going to have to sneak the rice in the future past the auntie so that I don't become the subject of conversation. Look how dumb your furriner is, he keeps paying too much money from that lizzard b*tch for her fancy fried rice, he needs a lady. yes Pooh he is a nice guy, he comes and buys drinks every day, what about your sister's cousin from yasothon she needs a man and she makes good fried rice.

I love Thai folks. They always make me feel like part of their big wierd family.

Once there was a man traveling to a new city.

On the way he met a man coming from the city, and asked him what the city was like.

The man said it was the worst city he had ever been to, people bad, food bad, all treated him bad.

Soon after the traveler met another man coming from the city, and asked him what the city was like. The man said it was the best city he had ever been to, people good, food good, all treated him good.

So it all depends on the Eye of the Beholder, and what you do, comes back to you, like a mirror.

That sentence refers to Bernie Sanders, a formerly doctrinaire communist.

Thats a hypothetical that points out the the American left is hypocritical, in that Naziism is condemned while Socialism is deemed to be an ethical and human loving ideology, when both are in fact equally murderous ideologies. Is that clearer?

Do I like Thai people? In general yes, kind, helpful, non confrontational, but do lack a lot of common sense, particularly on the roads.

The statistics tell you that, I would trust Thai people more than I would people from the UK to leave me alone when I walk the streets or go about my own business.

Mind your own business, do not get drunk, and you can walk the Thai streets in safety. I think that says a lot for Thai people.

Very Long OP.

Not sure if real or someone posing as a Thai .  Just on the outside chance that this is real.

Personally I have often said that it would be very embarrassing to me  if my Thai family became aware of the way some "Farangs" talk about them.

If I had to rank Thai people in the likability scale I would rank them Above average, If I needed one word to describe them, I would say "resourceful" .

I have the pleasure to interact with many of them in my everyday life in Issan and I am always amazed by their creative solution to problems, and their ability to do so much with so litle.

I think the way some farangs talk about Thai people tells more about them than it does about Thai people.

Yinn is real all right, and I for one am always happy to read her posts. Keep posting Yinn, I think you will find the vast majority of Thaivisa members are good decent people.

I have only just come across your post as I was in the UK when your post came out. Whatever you do Yinn, good luck.

Regardless of what anyone thinks we are all guests here.

I have a Australian friend that though I don't agree with his politics, on a personal level I like very much.. He constantly posts critical opinions about The Australian government ,and other Australians on FB, but he is also very proud of his country,  If a lot of Thais living in Australia were constantly posting negative opinions about Australia, I am sure he would not like it.

Same applies to me , and I am sure to you, so why not to Thai people?

Black people can use the N word with each other, I challenge you to go in Harlem and use it yourself.

Don't you see my point?

Absolute rubbish. Real guests don't get treated the way the Thai government treats us, ie, if someone was a guest in your house, would you tell them they must report to you every so often? Come on now.
