Panthongtae acquitted of money laundering charge

44.jpg

The Criminal Court for Corruption Cases today acquitted the son of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Panthongtae, of charges of money laundering involving a 10-million baht cheque, transferred to his bank account over 15 years ago by Mr Vichai Krisdathanon, then a top executive of the Krisdamahanakorn real estate group.

The court ruled that the prosecution evidence was not sufficient to prove that Mr. Panthongtae, who was then only 26 years old, was aware that the check transferred to his bank account was part of a large illegal loan granted to the company by the state-run Krung Thai Bank.

The court also pointed out that the defendant then had earnings from the shares he owned in several companies, estimated at about 4 billion baht, adding that the 10 million baht cheque amounted to just 0.0025% of Panthongtae’s earnings at that time.

I call it: playing with fire;
the Thai military is likely to expect new riots, from which the ones of 2010 will seem ridiculous.
The Chinese will take the opportunity to take power in this country as they have already done in Cambodia and Laos.
Prayuth and his friends will have only one possibility: to accept or ask for asylum in a country that will welcome them;
and I think there will not be many.

At 26 years old he was unaware that their must be something shady about a 10 million baht check that magically appeared in his account? He may have had many other assets, but surely no dividend / interest receipts like this. Either he has good lawyers or it was a set up result. I am sure that he would have been tipped off if the result was going the other way.

Panthongtae acquitted in money-laundering case

The Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on Monday (November 25) acquitted Panthongtae Shinawatra, son of former prime minister Thaksin, in an alleged money-laundering case in connection with a controversial Krungthai Bank loan.

The court ruled that the evidence against him lacked weight to prove that he had been aware that the Bt10-million cheque, given to him in 2004 by the then executive at the Krisada Mahanakorn property group, was allegedly part of the Krungthai Bank loan scandal.

The bank’s executives and senior members of the property group were sentenced to prison in August 2015 by the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Persons Holding Political Positions in the case of the illegitimate approval of a Krungthai Bank loan to Krisada Mahanakorn subsidiaries.

Prosecutors had also filed a case with the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases against some of the individuals last year, alleging conspiracy to launder money and collusion of money laundering. This case is still going on and has reached the process of witness inquiry.

“Honestly judge I didn’t know where the 10 million came from or why he gave it to me. Must have been totally random.”

Good defense!

It just shows you how stupid some super rich people can be.leaving a paper trail to his own bank.its obvious the judge was as bent as he is.

in the uk the his whole bank account and any assets would of been frozen and proof of where the whole lot come from.in the uk if you have over £1,000 or 38,000b and you are searched and can't prove where it came from then it can be confiscated.

thailand must be a soft touch for dirty money.ive deposited and withdrawn millions out of the bank and they don't even bat a eyelid.

the Chinese must be using Thailand like the Russians used Cyprus to off load their ill gotten gains.

anyway he is guilty as f?)( .

This could be true now that Thailand is becoming more under the influence of the Chinese, let's not forget the origin of the Thaksin dynasty .......LOL

Well that's a relief, I was quite worried about him.

Odd that the two of the  people who have not been convicted in this case of a dodgy loan are Oak who appears to have received a cut of it and the current finance minister, Uttama Savanayana, who was one of the five signatories of the loan approval.

Ummmm. All the so-called Elite in Thailand have, or claim, Chinese ancestry ... including Prayut.

I bet that either he will run away or nothing in this case will happen ...
The last major case of money laundering was a foreigner who was sentenced to 140 years in prison ...

No they're saying the prosecution couldn't find the evidence required to say he knew where it came from and under what circumstances....
Innocent until proven guilty.... [in this case]

It does seem to hint at rehabilitation of the Shinawatra image. The vast majority of Northern rural Thais are firmly in their camp, due to remembered favors when Thaksin and Yingluck were in power.

Do not know if it’s only me, but Thaksin and family members have been getting acquitted in all cases. Where as previously guilty with all cases

Careful, criticising a court decision is a crime here.

Why is his son in Thailand? It is over, no matter what happen the current pm will find a way to charge him.

Same thing the world over, you got money and influence,  you win.

Tannathorn (and the movement he created and currently leads) doesn't get his power from "the Rulers", he gets it from the people who support him and his movement. As long as he retains that support, and maybe increases it - then he remains powerful, no matter what the dinosaurs do. The same could be said of Thaksin. After all he has been in exile for however many years, the people have not been allowed to vote for him, yet he still commands a great deal of support.
