UK PM Johnson plans to block extension of Brexit transition beyond 2020

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will take the bold step of legislating to prevent any extension of the Brexit transition period beyond 2020, British media including The Times and the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Making any extension illegal, a move first reported by ITV, would set up a potential cliff-edge unless Johnson can strike a trade deal with the European Union in just 11 months.

After the United Kingdom leaves the EU on Jan. 31, it enters a transition period in which it remains an EU member in all but name while both sides try to hammer out a new trading relationship.

By enshrining in law his campaign promise not to extend the transition period beyond the end of 2020, Johnson cuts the amount of time he has to strike a trade deal to 11 months from nearly three years.

The laws needed to enact Brexit will be put before parliament on Friday, Johnson's spokesman had said earlier.

While Johnson's large majority gives him the flexibility to change the law should he need to, he is sending a bold message to the EU. The bloc's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, has warned that 11 months is not enough time to strike a comprehensive trade deal.

What a great prospect lies ahead, breaking free of that undemocratic institution.

Meanwhile, in other news, failed tory candidates Zac Goldsmith and Nicky Morgan get peerages to allow them to continue to trough at the taxpayers' expense. That swamp will be drained by Christmas at this rate!

Even Mr Macron is beginning to accept the reality of Boris Johnsons big majority in parliament, his rhetoric has changed somewhat since BJs success in the election.

A bit of a verbal BJ?

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come.

Napoleon Macron is having a rough time at home; likely to get rougher. He better start focusing on that.

The Kinnocks, both, have been in that gravy train for some time too.

Disgraceful that the upper house is now a trough for rejected politicians, sports people and other assorted entertainers, a few clergy and legal eagles.

Fear not, kind thane.  Lord Boris has not met three witches on the heath (unless you count the lady Thornberry and other such harlots), and Birnam Wood has long since been deforested.  All is well, unless Corbyn's ghosts come to haunt him.

Good move by Mr. Johnson, the EU clearly want to drag their feet in the hope that we continue paying our subsidies to their failing club for as long as possible.

He should make any divorce payment subject to a future trade deal being agreed by December 2020.

Once the ££ hits the floor you may not be so happy. Your drinks will suddenly cost a lot more.

Believe me, the £ will show what the markets think of BoJo and his ideas.

People like this mini me Napoleon continue to refer to Europe as being the same as the EU - it is not, especially now.

M. Le Presidente Macron has enough on his plate and has probably just realised that!

And… NONE of them are elected, all appointed.

But still, the British have a LOT to complain about the EU Council ( inclusive their own PM), the EU Commission ( inclusive one of their own) and the EU parliament ( all elected, inclusive 75 British (all till 31 of Jan 2020)

She would have finished the job if the Tory Europhiles hadn't stabbed her in the back. They could see that coming.

When the British were invited to join the €uro, thier currency waqs approx € 1,70. When all about Brexit started, € 1,35-1,40. After a lot of uncertinity: € 1,10 and now all know, Boris will have a hard Brexit 31 Dec 2020.. we will see.

Each member of the EU commission is appointed by their own government, just like nearly all civil cervants.

Short lived. The £ is on its way back down. Must be the remainers fault.

What do you mean by the term member?

Do you mean employee?

Of course it's the remainers fault, for 3.5 years now they have done every trick in the book to stymie the democratic referendum decision made by our country. Most of the duplitious MPs have been purged from parliament, many remain Labour seats have gone blue, why, because some people understand the importance of respecting a democratic vote.

Boris has worked wonders that many said was impossible and make no mistake we are all leavers now so it's time we started supporting the United Kingdom, even Steve 'foghorn' Bray has put a sock in it.
