Chiang Mai: Police act after sign at restaurant goes up stopping "Chinese and foreigners" due to virus

Police in Chiang Mai paid a visit to a well known noodle restaurant in a tourist area after there was a massive online backlash following signs put up by the restaurant.

The signs in Thai, Chinese and English said they were not serving Chinese customers at the moment.

Even other foreigners were not welcome. (This appeared to be an afterthought).

This was because of the coronavirus. Tourists were thanked for their understanding.

Netizens went into meltdown slamming the restaurant in Mae Orn, Mae Kampong - a well known tourist area.

They were shocked that a restaurant would be objecting to foreign tourists.

Provincial police deputy Pol Col Piyaphan Patrapongsin said this kind of thing was not appropriate for a center for tourism and culture like Chiang Mai.

A patrol from the Mae Orn police was sent in to explain to the restaurant that they should instigate other measures to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.

The restaurant agreed to take down the sign.

Thaivisa notes that the actions of the restaurant are not dissimilar to the actions of governments around the world that have banned entry to Chinese travellers or even people who have been to China in the last fortnight.

Among such countries are the US, Australia and Japan.

Unlike other recent restaurant signs, they forgot to put the 'Love you.' at the end.

Unbelievable...

What might these 'other measures' be?

Did they really think they could start an uprising against their rulers?

Glad that Thai police taught them before Thailand got punished.

The sign doesn't ban Chinese people, it only states 'Chainese' so Chinese can still go there.

... handling your custard sticky buns whilst reading 'courtesy' newspapers in  the coffeeshop.

The old worry of the 'past' used to simply be limited to the concerns of the black print coming off onto your fingers...

Do you know who NCC 1701A is?

I think the restaurant and everyone has a right to not serve anyone they don't want in their restaurant or have at their home or guest house at this present time. If the Government won't do it by banning the Chinese entry then it should be a personal right.. Nothing Racist or an act being discriminate against a religion, but it is  about a  choice of precaution against a virus, not a hate crime. And get your facts straight, there is no proven cure even with antiviral drugs. If you believe that then you believe there is a tooth fairy, and she is in fact Mary Poppins.

100% agree with you holy cow cm

Shame Prayut doesn't care about the Thai people as much as this restaurant owner cares about his staff and Thai customers

It is an easy fix anyway. Just tell them that they must wear masks and the masks must be worn correctly at all times.

Absolutely fine. If I owned a restaurant I too would not want any section of the population who could kill me by passing on an easily transmissible virus.

The racist, PC mob can get stuffed. Out of an abundance of caution I reserve my right and that of any staff to remove the risk at source not via an ineffective mask.

Probably would have been ok if it was "foreigners only".

Going by the stupid owner/manager's logic, it seems that only Thais are unaffected and will never be carriers of this virus. Must be feeling quite good to be so superior, one assumes.

nice to meet you Jonathan. i think. :shock1:

But I can assure you and many others will testify that my house is not full of white Aryans. :clap2:

It's called caution dingbat!

Nice to know the truth of what they think of tourists. Too add salt to the wound they cant even spell the name of those who come from China.

Also, wearing a mask, slapping sticky brown tape over Chinese mouths, paper bags over heads - you know, that sort of thing!

This is sad.  I remember when Japanese claimed to be immune to HIV until they weren't.  So TIT has come to this. It's bad enough that the Thai Gov. expects visitors to register their every move. Now someone claims the right to refuse service. Well, close all airports to international flights. I suspect we're all going to pay the price to negligence and false reports.

I think they will find it hard to eat with a mask on.

Nothing wrong with this sign

a private establishment has the right for some valid reasons

to refuse to serve a category of customers if they are ''at risk''.

for example here in Pattaya Thai men customers are not allowed

to enter in most of the gogo bars, nothing wrong or racist with it, just simple logic.

Never heard of Thais starting a campaign on social media about this fact

or crying to racism, even if it's their country.

Just read this in Chiangmaicitylfe

After negotiating with the authorities who explained that this kind of sign could have a negative impact on the image of Chiang Mai, it was agreed that a new sign saying, ‘Food ran out’ would be put up instead.
