Chiang Mai's governor Charoenrit Sanguansat and airport officials inspected arrangements for incoming passengers at Chiang Mai airport after new ramped up regulations came in for Thais and foreigners entering the province.

All foreigners are required to undergo mandatory 14 day quarantine.

If they already live in Chiang Mai they can do this at their homes while maintaining contact with health authorities.

If they are just visiting they are being taken to accommodation at three hotels in the city for 14 days: The BP Chiang Mai City Hotel, the May Flower Grande and The Chaya Resort and Spa.

People who break quarantine can be jailed for a year and/or fined 100,000 baht.

Wonder how they will monitor if arriving by road. Any roadblocks on Hwy 11?

Yes, there's one at the Saraphi PTT station going inbound. There's also another one at the Doi Saket police station on Hwy 118.

He arrived into Chiang Mai by air, direct from the USA?

what special rate do they get at those mandated hotels?

Oh, I can assure you, with only 3 hotels authorized to provide this service, the rate will be very, very special indeed.

Racism is alive and well!  Foreigners, IMHO, are less likely to carry the virus than the locals since most have learned proper hygiene since childhood; less likely to be riding 2 or more on a motorcycle; may better understand the significance of social distancing, etc.

The Chaya Resort one is about 20 quid a night. does the person in quarantine have to pay his own bill?

If so, that's no fun.

what a bargain!

fly into china and you foot the bill for 14 days quarantine in one of the government approved hotels.  expect to pay 500-800 rmb/day, or about 2500-3000 baht daily.

It is very possible that Thai tourism will never recover from this catastrophe. It was already in a state of decline. And now? The curve is flattening, there are less deaths, and less cases every day now, yet the zombie apocalypse panic continues.

It just goes to prove beyond a doubt in the immense, empty space between the ears of the average Thai politico - implementing policies based on nothing but racial profiling and overt racist beliefs will actually "flatten the curve" because as all Thais know - foreigners, especially Farangs - are all Covid-carrying infection machines and the primary vector for spreading the virus and must be locked up.
"See! It Worked!"
A now racism and anti-foreign sentiment becomes even more vile and disturbing.

can't imagine tourists being interested in visiting the most polluted city on the planet

You did not specify which city you are talking about.  According to the latest available publications from Wikipedia and corroborated by other sources, the top cities are: Linfen, China. Tianying, China. Sukinda, India. Vapi, India. La Oroya, Peru. Dzerzhinsk, Russia. Norilsk, Russia. Chernobyl, Ukraine. Sumgayit, Azerbaijan. Kabwe, Zambia, not to forget Beijing, China.
