The Chinese will be happily flooding back to Thailand come July, predicts tourism chief

The head of the Chiang Mai tourism business association Noppadol Jariphak told local media that the Chinese were ready to come back to Thailand in droves.

Noppadol said that Thailand is a wonderful place for tourism for Chinese and other nationalities.

They also appreciate that Thailand has top notch health services as proved during the Covid-19 crisis, he said.

Asked by Chiang Mai News about fears of a renewed spread of the virus Noppadol said that new "quality" measures would be in place to prevent that.

He predicted that by July the Chinese would start coming back - it may be a trickle at first but it would soon be a flood.

And not before time. He reckoned that the crisis has caused 5 billion baht of losses in the Chiang Mai tourism sector with hundreds of thousands of people directly affected.

Low cost airlines will start flying in May, he said, a good first step that will allow Thai domestic tourism first.

Then the Chinese would be back. Perhaps not in the same numbers before the pandemic started but it will soon recover.

The media went with a headline suggesting that when Thailand is ready the Chinese will be back immediately.

Wet noodle dream, buddy! It will take years to recover and suspicions will be  forever in our minds.

What can one even say? Tourism is not returning to Thailand anytime soon. If you think about it, the group that comprised perhaps 60% of all arrivals (lower to middle income Chinese and Indians) are the ones who have been hardest hit by this idiotic worldwide economic shutdown. Tourism in Thailand will never recover to even close to it's former levels, and that leaves millions out of work. Most countries will still be required to have Covid letters, as the virus is still raging in many countries. And some countries will not issue that letter (impossible to get in the US). Plus, will the mandatory health insurance still be required? Will it be even stricter than before? And just what are people returning to, or coming to? Will everything be open? How about nightlife?

There are so many unanswered questions, it boggles the mind. One thing is for certain. Thailand will be feeling the effects of this for a very, very long time. So will the rest of the world. And rosy projections are just that. They are based on less than zero.

What a likeable and honest looking contemporary! I know some of them (e.g. our village chief), and what most have in common is relentless striving for the well-being of even the lowest of their subjects ...

I doubt they will be allowing incoming tourists before everything is open again, including nightlife. When they do they'll probably ease up the requirements as very few tourists would go through those hoops. Many countries will have those letters available by June-July. My guess is that's when they'll start allowing some tourists in. Masses? nope, lol.

The decision makers in Thailand are Sino-Thai families so the Chinese will be welcomed with open arms. No doubt Chinese will get exemption from health insurance, CV19 free certification as they are coming from a low risk area... ????????

Tourism chief? I thought it was a  Sasquatch.

Agreed there Forza2002 - I wouldn't at all be surprised as when do greed and logic ever meet in any decisions made here?  Which one prevails every time?

Does Khun Nappadol think the Chinese are all teetotallers?

Of course they will come flooding back because most have had no jobs for months. One boat accident in Phuket and the Chinese tourists dropped dramatically. What will happen after a pandemic?

What a nob, a deluded one at that.

You would think that anyone associated with tourism would be well advised to keep their heads down.

those will not be a problem for the chinese.

insurance is already cheap...... picc offers private policies similar to the bupa my thai gf has but about 25% cheaper.  the government could easily mandate some form of short-term policy with covid coverage at a reasonable cost.

virus tests are available on demand at the main hospital where i live, small city in hainan province.  cost about 1000 baht.  two airports (haikou and sanya) have direct flights to thailand, could set up test clinics outside the terminals, assuming there's a reliable 15-minute test.

flights won't be a problem either.  domestic flights are operating, and at least a dozen chinese-branded carriers already have established routes to thailand.  they have the planes and the staff, record-low fuel prices, and pent-up demand.  only waiting for approval from both governments.

the main problem will be quarantines.  trips to thailand are perfect for the chinese, only a couple hours flight from major hubs.   with visa on arrival a weekend trip to thailand is as cheap/convenient as a domestic visit to popular domestic destinations.  it's the  14-day isolation at either end that will kill the deal.

you needn't worry about many not having jobs for months.  lots of factories were shut down, migrant workers stayed home, but they aren't the ones taking trips.  much of the population still got their paychecks.  chinese are big savers, will often buy their cars or apartments for cash.  a trip to thailand won't dent their savings.

be ready..........they are coming.

OH NO! And this country keeps on hit lower and lower into the septic tank. No Chinese in CM!

So we can expect a second wave of the virus in the next coming months ☹️

The guy lives in the land of nod if he thinks the Chinese will be flooding back in July there is more chance of seeing pigs flying think he needs to look in the mirror. ????

To be honest I doubt there will be additional requirements beyond temperature checks, cant afford to do it. Economy in shambles. Enough is enough, i think most are starting to realize this whole lockdown thing was ridiculous.

If the Chinese are required to provide the same documentation and certificates that other countries are being demanded of then I seriously doubt this will happen.

Funny that the country that started the virus could be the only one let in with no requirements !

The road to hell is paved with good intentions and wishful thinking !!!

... reality is nothing to be ignored

How about ensuring the country is safe to receive tourists before making such statements, plus I hope substational checks will be in place so as not to re-infect anyone they come in contact with because if they do infect anyone the government better pack their bags and make way for others that can run the country otherwise no one will want to come here better hand the keys over to China........LOL

Yes, they will be back in droves! After three months of unemployment and struggling to survive, they will need to sell the last of their possessions for a well-deserved vacation in Thailand. TaT's a fact!
