Chop Chop - Pattaya Beach Trees Are Being Removed

Featured Replies

Pattaya beach trees are being removed by the powers that be in City Hall. Maybe they are clearing spots for the new public toilets on the beach?

Seems like no more free shade, you'll have to pay for a sun umbrella from the beach chair vendors.

yes i have noticed it

they have started to cut the trees since weeks already

it seems the city hall is at war with the greenery. all the trees

need to disappear, the officials will be happy if there is only

cement everywhere, Sad really.

Maybe they imagine a ''world class resort'' can stay without any public park ?

Well they did announce in the news thread they were spending 160 million baht to refurbish the beach, including replacing all the trees (so falling palms and coconuts don't hurt/kill people).

I'm also a fan of adding toilets. How are we supposed to drink all day at the beach if we have to keep crossing beach road to go to the toilet...it's hard enough to cross when sober ????

Not just on that beach. Must be some nationwide thing to get rid of trees. I am in Chiang Mai and all around our area they are chopping down massive old trees. Very strange...and such a shame.

The trees were beautiful and provided shade. Who though of this idea? ????

Some unusual shaped logs for that particular beach ????

Thais seem to hate trees i live in the countryside any excuse to cut a tree down seems welcomed....... i suppose its just blatant ignorance or are they just philistines

Many of the trees chopped down were not palm trees, see bottom of first photo, the stump. These old broad leaf trees provided the best shade and did not have coconuts.

You are right

i am afraid the only reason for the cut is these trees provided shade to

an increasing number of homeless, and the city hall doesn't know how

to solve the problem as there is no any social structure in place to take

care of these people, then they just try to do the place less attractive for them

it's also why there are no decent public benches on the beach road walkside

the city hall is afraid the homeless use them as a bed

One more photo of the destruction.

Note also that all the beach chair vendors have disappeared from the beach to prevent damage and injury to vendors and their customers.

Some years ago i have asked to few Thai people why they were cutting the trees

the reason given was when there are severe thunderstorms, trees fall on the houses

the cars, the people, damaging stuff and killing people without any possibility of

financial compensation for the losses.

So it seems it's more about the fear,

And because of people like you, this may be why they've never had beach toilets and why they need to cut the trees to stop the "beach road stars" standing under them. Surely you can take them to your room instead of denying the rest of us a nicer beach experience with clean toilets ????

They're not.

I recall the cull of the original old growth trees several years ago on the grounds that they masked the CCTV coverage which enabled criminal activities. These are the same CCTV cameras that are largely broken and not connected to anything anymore. The most recent Beach road widening and beach beautification saw all those ugly palm trees installed by the contractor Nong Nuch Gardens. I guess they have a new contract.

More recently on Jomtien, a branch fell from one of the old, untended trees and killed an Italian guy. Instead of doing some much needed lopping of old, dangerous branches, they cut all the trees down and bought some more palm trees from Nong Nuch Gardens.

The old growth trees had root systems that helped prevent beach erosion. Palm trees don't.

I think it is a good time at the moment to improve things. Yesterday I was at the beach in Central Pattaya at about 3 in the afternoon. At the whole area were the sand is I saw about 7 people and 2 lifeguards. I didn't see how many people used the sun chairs. So not many people get disturbed now.

Thais seem to hate anything green with a fervor. Just pour concrete over the sand already.

I don't think so

most of the beach road workers are not here in the afternoon, so they are not

really interested by the tree shade.

Public toilets are already available on beach road, but you

need to cross the road coming from the beach.

but don't expect clean toilets (Except the ones

in the malls, like Central or Royal Garden)

Anyway my room is too far from the beach to go and comeback with my ST lunch

hence the ST hotel,  it also saves me the cleaning of the sheets

Here in the USA, my wife had her brother take down a few small trees in the yard while I wasn't looking.  Beautiful small red-leafed Japanese maple, a Beech tree and a Hickory. Right nearby there was a standing tree completely dead and rotting.  They left that one.

Kind of how the cable issue came about except missed on the removing. Have seen many tree removal sessions on Pattaya Beach and it is such a shame, the rats have nowhere to go.

Just came back on Hwy 7, from Chon Buri to Pattaya they are removing all the trees in the middle put in just a few years ago when they were putting up all the toll booths. They a widening for more lanes when they should have thought about it two years ago.

As for money they got plenty of it for Beach Road, they have stolen a Billion baht from the Indoor Stadium project to improve Beach Road the last 10 plus years while the stadium is still unfinished.

Sounds like a committee decision to me! They do love committees!

Relax.....those palm trees had to go. It's part of the improvements with the long term goal being to twin with Bognor Regis.   No palm trees in Bognor are there ?  So there you have it.

You are right, there are no green banknotes!

Yesterday the ones I saw cut down were dead. They trimmed branches off of others.
