Sorry Chiang Mai - you were not visited by aliens!

Some netizens in Chiang Mai were convinced that the northern Thai city had been visited by aliens.

An object in the sky posted by a student in video and still shots, purported to show a UFO hovering menacingly above Doi Suthep.

Now a leading astronomer has poured cold water on the claims.

Supharik Krihanon of the national astronomical society said the object was low in the sky, near and slow moving.

It was quite clear that this was nothing but a lantern.

Lanterns are set off as part of the Yi Peng (Lantern Festival) or Loy Krathong festivals that are celebrated in the north around the same time.

He surmised that someone had probably jumped the gun.

The ones I see on the ground are covered in soot. Also, against a bright cloudy sky they will appear dark as they are in shadow.

I have seen weather balloons descending on Doi Suthep, they look just like that coming down.

Launched likely by Thai met agency VTCC.
