Eight more Thais caught sneaking back from Myanmar

Eight other Thai nationals were arrested on Monday for crossing the border illegally from Myanmar’s Tachileik city to Chiang Rai district.

All women, the group had worked in Myanmar and decided to return to Thailand due to the Covid-19 situation. Each paid Bt6,500 to Myanmar traffickers so as to avoid border checks.

On the same day, Chiang Rai authorities revealed that two Thai women who returned from Tachileik earlier had tested positive for Covid-19.

They added that most Thais returning from Myanmar recently had crossed the border illegally to work in entertainment venues in the neighbouring country.

Four more people were arrested in Chiang Rai for sneaking over the border on Sunday, after one of the group announced their planned illegal crossing on Facebook last week. None were found to be suffering fever.

Thais seem to consider most of their laws as optional.

This could have been happening for a long time?  What about those who managed to entered the country? No records ????‍♂️

You should go to Italy! ????

What are they working in Myanmar?

People from there come to Thailand to work here on low wages (still better than home).

Thais going there must work even cheaper than the locals, otherwise they wouldn't get the job.

Even if they work in a special field, this must be on a very low remuneration.

My guess would be an occupation that provides relatively high remuneration to somewhat attractive young women. Perhaps laundry or other service ?

webfact says they were working in the entertainment venues . Why the locals can't do this I don't know.

But it does surprise me to think Thais go there for this.

Are Thai girls better qualified than Myanmar girls?

Or they have probably a better CV.

Don't need an Oxford degree.

Stating that Pattaya as an experience is a high bonus when applying.

They work in casinos and attached karaoke bars, frequented by those lucky in casinos. Leave it to your imagination what they do there.

There are several casinos on the Tachileik side of the border. As part of the casinos there are KTV places and other pay for play facilities. Many of the women are recruited for that. It isn't as if wages are particularly high in Maesai or other parts of the province near the border.

Time for a change of guard at CM... this is getting embarrassing for the PM who says the borders are safe.

Unless you're a farang.  Then they'll enforce laws that aren't even in the books.

A particular type of laundry.

I've no doubt it involves trousers and some sort of pressing matters, along with losing the shirt off your back.

Very bad that you have to pay a "trafficker" to bring you back to your own country.

Embarrassing.

Yes, happening for a long time

And yes, no records

Only came to light/got a reaction because 2 of them had symptomatic COVID. Given that most of these women are comparatively young, most of them will be asymptomatic with COVID.

Can safely assume other, symptomatic cases have gone unnoticed

Can also safely assume that at least some such cases are engaged in similar employment in Thailand putting their clients at risk

They did not have to.

They chose to in order to avoid the mandatory quarantine

Walker88 is correct when mentioning casinos. There are several Thai/Chinese owned casino hotels in Tachilek, including the Regina Hotel & Casino, the Allure Resort, the Shwe Bu Thee Casino Hotel and The Golden Triangle Casino Hotel. From experience several years ago, when having a small flutter at the roulette tables whilst shopping in Burma, the majority of the staff were young Thai ladies and men working as croupiers, receptionists, cashiers, waiters, bar staff and hostesses in the karaoke bars etc. The Burmese local people were only employed in menial jobs in catering, cleaning and maintenance etc. I believe there are also Chinese employees these days.

If there a few Thai girls working in the casinos, how many Thais are there gambling (I mean with money - not their lives) in the casinos there?

Some Thais cannot resist the temptation of gambling.

Clearly that's not a trait unique to Thais

My guess would be physiotherapy. Performing operations to improve your breathing. ????

I personally would have to question the nature of the work these Thais are undertaking.

Surely they are not just going to Myanmar just to ply their Trade as " Escorts ".

Maybe the returning people are earning far more for the risk of getting caught by smuggling Illegal Contraband.

That seems to be a more lucrative activity to me, and the press and Authorities are possibly just not letting the reasons out  for fear of loosing " Face "

The only reason to pay a trafficker was to bypass quarantine... they were free to come back legally !
