The bars and clubs might be open, but Pattaya’s famous nightlife looks dead and buried

The bars and clubs might be open, but Pattaya’s famous nightlife looks dead and buried

It was reminiscent of Mr Bumble wandering down a snowy street in Oliver Twist offering a "Boy for Sale".

But this wasn't desolate Victorian England - this was Pattaya in the 21st Century.

Much of Pattaya is for sale or rent. The "lady" who once offered so much is a shadow of her former self still lying lower than low even after the orders to close were lifted.

Walking Street resembled that lonely road traversed by Mr Bumble  in the famous musical trying to sell the little boy.

Just like then there were few takers.

Pattaya Update News, and an identical story on We Love Pattaya, said that bars, pubs and entertainment places could now open to 11 pm.

But few were bothering. Instead the once vibrant street, home to Thais and foreigners on a night out, was deserted.

Some places just had forlorn staff staring out. There were no customers at 9.30 pm.

Yes, it was a Monday but even the 7-Elevens were shut and the fast food joints were closed.

There were lease, rent and for sale signs everywhere with phone numbers posted more in hope than anything else.

In addition there were holes everywhere dug by City Hall to bury the cables and make Walking Street beautiful again.

That appeared a distant dream on Monday night for it was Walking Street itself that was dead and buried.

Hundreds of comments and shares resulted from the posts with people offering their support and driving the nail in in equal measure.

For example "Wimon" offered hope that a Covid-19 vaccine would soon bring everyone back "nae norn" (for sure).

But Mangkorn Burapha said all the businesses will have gone bust before it's open again.

In related news "Dan About Thailand" - a well known blogger - suggested that places like Soi Bua Khao and Soi LK Metro were bucking the trend, at least to an extent.

Wasn't Walking Street mainly for the 2 week Millionaires? Surely very few local expats went there. Dreadful place.

  • Looks like we have a winner of the 'Sanctimonious, here for the culture' BS Award.

  • Never dead, there's always the family traffic at the world class resort!

now when its an empty street

man never thought Id see the lights out at a 7-11--that speaks volumes in LOS

No way in Hell Id be the sucker walking around there as a farang target, its bad enough walking down Loy Kroh having the chubby Isaan Grannies cat calling you pre-covid....

Would remind me of those coming into Swampy currently only to watch the sad faces on taxi slags as the ASQ crew sweeps you up and chucks you in a private van(Quarantine Can) ????

Old news but true anyway.

Not what you would call dead if you come from a sleepy village.

Its so easy to do some pictures/videos in WS and Soi 7/8 and many of the big beer bar complexes and call it dead. Central stretch of Soi 7 much darker than any of the pics in the op. Spooky.

First time you notice that there are no street lights

This article is probably the 10th or so times it comes around lamenting the faith of Pattaya, and each time the answers are the same, what ever they are, things will get better when the rest of the world will be better and not a moment sooner...

Pattaya is like the bad guy in a action film that you think is dead in the false ending but keeps coming back to kill you.

in other news sales and installation of striper poles in Expat's condos soar.

The beautiful thing about Walking Street is if you don't like it you don't have to go there!  Every time a friend of mine visits Thailand for the first time, I always take them on a tour of WS. It's nice to see it through fresh eyes.

Some like durian, some don't. If you don't, then don't complain about those of us who do.

I do not lose sleep over the state of Pattaya.

Cashed up, with lots of time to kill, but can't get out of Australia ( COVID BAND FROM LEAVING ) and if I could leave, there is just to many hoops to jump through getting into Thailand. Might try some where else , like the Philippines , were it's a little more realistic in it's rules of entry . This is a disastrous time, for old folks like me, with time running out and your ability to travel getting shorter by the day, If I could get out of Australia and Thailand made it easy to get in for long term visa's , I would be happy to cop the 14 day quarantine for the sake of a long stay visa, but Thai  immigration require health insurance for such a visa ,which because of my age I can't get. .. Regards ,,,,Popa

I feel your pain. While I am already in LOS, I dare not leave to visit family in the US for fear of the same treatment when trying to return.

Not difficult to see where the designer of the classy new WALKING STREET sign got the inspiration. Very fitting.

Walking street "nightlife" isn't about the "street".  Photos showing no activity outside is a good thing.  Mongers are all inside where the action is, spending money, and enjoying themselves.  That is what it is all about.  Thankfully they do let the obnoxious video bloggers take photos or videos anywhere near the gogo's.  The truth is there are more lady companions per foreigner available than ever ????.

My god !    They just opened it up !

UPDATE:   Long lines of traffic making there  way down for the R and R  !   Many Thaivisa shirts

spotted amongst the crowd.
