Adopting a soi dog has been good for my health.

Years ago I was a teacher and one day I fed a dog outside my office door. From that moment onwards the dog waited outside the same area for me. I would go home on my motorbike and he would run after me. After a while, my wife agreed to have him at our home.

For many years I've been taking him for run/ fast walk morning and night. He's a funny dog with a great temperament. If he see's a pack of dogs he runs right in there to take them all on. I had him sterilized and he calmed down a lot but still more or less the same mut. He is great with my daughter and part of our family.

If I didnt have him I possibly would be very unfit and 10kilos heavier. I enjoy the exercise with him and yes I do get some looks from the locals when they see me taking my dog for a walk. I don't think I have EVER seen a thai walking their dog. They are all stuck behind the gate all day.

Anyways, if you have the means and know a good street dog that you like I would encourage you to take him home.

cheers

I go to an exercise park and cycle most days and there are usually Thai people exercising there dogs around the circuit on leads etc.

I emphasise though these dogs I have seen are not soi dogs, they are clearly quality "pure breed" dogs like Husky etc not mongrels. Never seen a  typical soi dog on a lead.

Is it supposed to be cool? Maybe for the Thais. Certainly not for the dogs

its animal cruelly.  Dogs need exercise, if you can't exercise your dog, you shouldn't have one. We chose to have small dogs, two Shih Tzu, for just that reason, they are easy to exercise.

They seem to go for the more exotic breeds as some kind of "hi-so" symbol with no actual knowledge of the breed or what it needs etc IMHO

I have 4 dogs here, but dont exercise any of them, they play together and have over an acre of walled garden to just please themselves all day????

Then that's exercise and space enough of course. Our garden is also fairly large, certainly enough for 2 small dogs, but we do take them to Wisdom Valley  3 times a week, now that there is a great, prepared grass  area for them to run about off the leads.  What I see far too often are big dogs locked into a small garden, sometimes with no grass areas to play on, so no wonder they are aggressive when approached.  Maybe that's the idea.

Well it certainly makes them more territorial thats for sure. Anything or anyone coming near the entrance is quickly met by all 4. Didnt intend on 4, went for a pup after my dog died (old age) and couldnt split them, so took the 3 home...5555.

This is what I love about village life here. All the dogs are free to roam and there never seems to be any hassle at all. The kids show no fear at all of them and they all just intermingle.

There's no such thing as a stressed or aggressive dog around here and the dogs get all the exercise they need in the natural way.

My father in law picked up a Soi dog several years ago up here in Issan. Sweetest mixed breed of a dog. My wife's father has dementia now and the dog is always there with him.

Soi dogs, almost 3 years ago my wife came home with a puppy, where you get it from i ask, its mother comes to school every day for food.

2 months later she comes home with another puppy, same story.

Now 4 months ago 6 puppies, 3 gone to other people, 3 still here.

The father sleeps outside my bedroom door, blocks the other dogs from getting near me.

The mother has to be chained when anybody comes to our home, she bites, but only protecting me.

I would not be happy now without my dogs, breeds unknown, but loyal/ faithful dogs.

I have four, three which are rescued.  I bought a GSD. Then a soi dog who was quite friendly and used to take the shoes of Thais was attacked with some sort of long knife by a Thai who took exception to the dogs actions. Then a student left my third dog in her room while she went back to her village never to come back. The fourth a pup was left with her sister outside my gate last week. I managed to find a home for her sister thankfully. I have a large enough area for them to run around but also walk them twice a day.

You are a good man , Colin .

Just a little bit of good care , and an abandoned soi dog who suffered most of it's life , will become healthy again and really be grateful to you , who saved him , for the rest of it's life .

It is good and healthy for the mind , if  somebody getting older takes care of a pet . A win-win situation .

And , in the world we are living in , it is good to have a friend who does never lie to you .

Only , if you live in a condo or simply not have a place or the time for a dog , you should not have one .

But , if you have a good heart , help a poor and suffering creature even if it lives on the outside .

These 2 for example would have died already ... they were only bones and skin when I picked them up .

Nobody did feed them , and if somebody tried to , other stronger dogs would bite them and eat their food ...

They suffered a lot , but now , they are happy . So am I .

We had two small dogs of our own initially,  now we have three others, each being from neighbours houses that decided we offered a better cuisine  and care, after my wife started giving them  bits of food.  The neighbours are quite happy.  The three big ones  are great watchdogs, they dont bite or attack  motor bikes etc, but   set up one hell of a noise  if anyone tries to enter our yard. All five  are happy to go for their walk with us each  morning and evening, no leash required, they stay alongside us and play around.

It's good for your health to walk the dog every day, even when you don't have a dog...????

Most dogs I have seen in Thailand appear to be infested with fleas and ticks and are scratching themselves non stop . Do any of you dog lovers take your dogs to the vets for treatment of fleas ? ( I have seen a mauve coloured spray on dogs backs )   or do you treat them yourself with Frontline ?

Also does anyone know how to stop dogs attacking people on bikes or motorcycles ?

But bad for digestion according to my Korean neighbor.

you should say this to charlie smith, it could help him become a real man !

Bravecto is the best against ticks and fleas . A little expensive , but worth it , good for at least 6 month .

Carry some dry dog food in a small container on your bike , all soi dogs are hungry . Throw some to them when they annoy you , they will be too busy picking it up to follow you .

Next time you come around , they might be waiting for food , but won't be aggressive ...

Need a female that isn't too large and won't jump on wife (she paralyzed on one side) last girl was chihuahua, Bangkok chick puppy who was wifes best friend for 14 years, she passed right before we retired here. The Thai ladies in Texas called her my Mira Noy....Would like a rescue but no idea where to start looking...
