A very tenous issue Covid has become.  Life without knowing, because of no mass testing, yet the numbers hover in the 2k area and continue in line with double digit deaths.

Seems things continue to get worse and we continue to see record numbers of deaths.

With a population of around 10 million for greater Bangkok, out of which probably 30 to 50% is already infected (and mostly asymptomatic), it will take years to test everyone at a rate of 10,000 per d

Pretty obvious they are struggling to contain this, with numbers this high its playing catch up all the time, contain one cluster only to fight another and another and this logically leads to further

Get >2000 with low mass testing (argue against this if you will) and the infections rate MUST be higher. BKK alone should be doing 10,000+ tests a day. Test more, find more. This is one way to stop

Now people are saying "oh, it's steady at 2k per day, great!".

This isn't great.

If I was a betting man I would say this is purely down to the limited numbers of tests being conducted.

Without those numbers we will not know just how prevalent the virus is in Thailand.

Excess deaths are the key metric.

Hmmm.. whatever happened to.... the major vaccine manufacturers are only willing to sell to governments/government agencies (so says the Thai government).  Last time I checked, the IOC was a private organization, just like the Thai Private Hospitals Assn.... What gives?

"The Pfizer vaccine is expected to be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of this year, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Facebook on Friday.

According to the post, Pfizer is scheduled to deliver between 10 million and 20 million doses by the end of the year. The minister added that negotiations with the vaccine manufacturer had gone smoothly.

Anutin also added that the process of registering the Pfizer vaccine with the Thai Food and Drug Administration will be completed quickly."

From past public comments, the government has indicated it intends to mainly use the Pfizer vaccines for the teenage/younger population....

However we already know that natural heard immunity in small propotions of the population  did nothing for the likes of the UK, Europe and US. It had minimal impact, the only successful strategy with the UK variant in the UK was mass testing, lockdowns and vaccinations, they are doing neither here.

Yeah Sweden has shown that really nicely! There have already over 1 million infected whit population little over 10 million! And they have still huge problem in head of them even vaccination going forward!

In stinging bad news delivered Friday, Thailand reported another rise in COVID patients hospitalized in critical condition, reaching a pandemic record 1,170 cases. At the same time, the share of those patients requiring respirators to breathe also rose to set a pandemic record for Thailand at 367 patients. Both figures have been rising almost daily for the past month, even as daily new COVID case numbers have fluctuated below prior peaks.

During Friday's English language COVID news briefing, a government spokesman provided additional details on how Thailand will offer COVID vaccinations to foreign nationals during the second half this year... Among those specifics reported:

--the current Mor Prom registration app for vaccination appointments is being modified to allow foreigners to use it by registering with their passport numbers (though that feature has not been added yet). "That is on the way," the spokesman said.

--the Bangrak Hospital in Bangkok has been identified as the first specific vaccination location that will be accessible by foreign nationals with English speaking support staff, though the spokesman said others likely would be added in the future.

--the government spokesman also pushed back against the notion that the government had been flip-flopping on its vaccination policy for foreign nationals, saying the policy had been to include them all along.

"The Prime Minister confirmed that equal access to vaccines for all living in Thailand... So actually, this policy is not anything new," said government spokesman Natapanu Nopakun.

Separately, a government news bureau announcement provided this additional detail:

"Department of Disease Control Director-General Dr. Opas Kankawinpong said ... the process for foreigners to register for inoculation will be the same as for Thais. Those in vulnerable groups, such as healthcare staff, those living in at-risk areas, the elderly and those with underlying diseases will be vaccinated first."

https://www.facebook.com/nbtworld/posts/10157999664147050

Nopakun also closed Friday's English news briefing with a plea to the foreign community in Thailand that suggested the government had been taking some heat over the confusion over its policy toward vaccination of foreign nationals.

"Please understand the dynamics within Thailand, and the limitations that all governments around the world face, even your governments, your countries around the world in this trying times, in these extraordinary unconventional times.

"So please see yourself as part of our team, in the same way that we have confirmed to you, those living on Thai soil, that you are also included in our efforts. We’re talking about magnanimity, we’re talking about generosity, understanding and empathy. So hoping for your understanding and your support, because you’re all friends of Thailand, and no one is safe until all is safe.”

so...you can't be vaccinated if you have covid, but Thailand has limited testing so they are painting themselves into a corner which will result in major problems to their vaccine roll-out. It doesn't look like things will improve any time soon.

New cluster 160 cases found in Bang Kae after Covid-19 tests at a department store in Bang Kae. from B.P.

This " new Cluster " in Bang Kae, is not a new cluster, its the same one that was there about 3 weeks ago, and is still rampant.

Because of the policy not to test, these kind of " spurious "outbreaks will continue in Communities that has been given the all clear.

Charting of Thailand rolling seven-day average of new COVID cases -- a key indicator used by health authorities to track COVID case trends -- shows the new daily case numbers continuing to moderate and remain below prior highs at almost 1,886.

The data by the same website, Our World in Data, updated through May 5, also shows the seven-day trend of COVID deaths in Thailand having made a steep rise since the middle of April, but just lately beginning to level off at 20.

True, but cost was never mentioned.  There is no guarantee it will be free.

Under the pretext that English speaking staff are required for the foreigners at separate vaccination sites, we might also see a payment system at the entry. Let's see.

Testing 20,000 , finding 2,000 = 10%. That rolled out in BKK alone would be over a million positive tests.

Thailand is now proving to the world just how fake its figures truly are with these figures.

Daily recap from the Thai Ministry of Public Health on how Thailand is faring versus other world countries and its regional peer countries in terms of total COVID cases since the start of the pandemic. Thailand has moved up one notch to now rank 98th among world countries in total numbers of COVID cases:

Well, no.

There are 3 major kinds of testing:

Targeted random testing, where they go out in a neighborhood and test people off the street.

Contact tracing and testing persons under investigation.

Hospital walk-ins.

Typically, each group has different positivity rates.

Active testing has a posivity rate of 4-6%. PUI and walk-in testing have much higher rates, but they don't represent the general population.

Today, 220 cases were discovered via targeted active case finding, for the whole country.

10,000 excess deaths since November.

At 1.2% Thailand ranks sixth in ASEAN for population inoculation

Thailand ranks sixth among ASEAN’s 10 member countries for COVID-19 vaccination of their population, at 1.2%, with over 1.6 million doses being administered, according to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.

More than 1.16 million vaccinations were the first dose, while the second jab account for over 434,000 doses to date. 49.5% of all the doses administered in Thailand were to medical personnel, according to data released by the ministry yesterday (Thursday).

All ASEAN countries have inoculated at least some of their population, as follows:

  1. Singapore: 2,213,888 doses (19.5% of its population), Vaccines: Pfizer and Moderna
  2. Cambodia: 2,4608,983 doses (7.7% of its population), Vaccine: Sinopharm
  3. Indonesia: 21,313,654 doses (3.9% of its population), Vaccine: Sinovac
  4. Malaysia: 1,624,272 doses (2.5% of its population) Pfizer and Sinovac
  5. Laos 345,818 doses (2.3% of its population) Vaccine: Sinopharm
  6. Thailand: 1,601,838 doses (1.2% of its population), Vaccines: Sinovac and AstraZeneca
  7. Brunei: 10,715 doses (1.2% of its population) Vaccine: AstraZeneca
  8. Myanmar: 1,040,000 doses (1% of its population) Vaccine: AstraZeneca
  9. Philippines: 2,129,185 doses (1% of its population) Vaccines: Sinovac and AstraZeneca
  10. Vietnam: 585,539 doses (0.3% of its population) Vaccine: AstraZeneca

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/at-1-2-thailand-ranks-sixth-in-asean-for-population-inoculation/

Note: the percentages above appear to be comparing the total numbers of doses given versus the countries' total populations. However, because the vaccines being given require two doses, the share of populations who have fully completed their vaccinations is going to be smaller percentages.

Thailand's vaccine update as of Friday  -- total doses, then first shot and second shot cumulative subtotals. Thus only about 450,000+ of Thailand's nearly 70 million population have been fully vaccinated thus far.
