Sanook reported on a great swathe of 200-1000 baht fines that have been announced in the Government Gazette on behalf of the Royal Thai Police.

As regards fines for traffic violations among some of the examples they gave were:

Using an unroadworthy vehicle 400 baht

Having no registration plate 500 baht

Contravening emissions regulations 1,000 baht

Not following the instructions of traffic signs 500 baht

Having no licence to show 200 baht

Negligent or "scary" driving 400 baht

Driving on the footpath 500 baht

Illegal use of mobile phones (without such things as hands free devices) 400 baht

Illegally stopping in restricted areas 300 baht

Finally, they said that there was a 500 baht fine for overtaking on the left a practice known as undertaking.

Many people in Thailand claim that this is legal, notes Thaivisa, perhaps because of its prevalence.

The exact nature of the roads where this might be applied was not specified. In many countries the practice is not illegal though in some it depends on the size of the road that is to say the number of lanes.

Driving like a farang...1000 baht, it really confuses the locals when you do the right thing.

  • No fines for idiots blocking the right lane driving as if the road belongs to them?

For the cases below, it shouldn't be just a fine, the rider/driver shouldn't be allowed to ride away.

unroadworthy vehicle 400 baht

Having no registration plate 500 baht

Contravening emissions regulations 1,000 baht

Having no licence to show 200 baht

If a vehicle ir unroadworthy or not registered or the driver/rider unlicensed it/they shouldn't be on the road full stop. The normal procedure in most countries is you have to collect it later. This is a real inconvenience often worse than the fine. It would be a better deterrent.

The Chinese tourists were famous for doing this in CM on bikes. They would even dead stop on the right to look at their phone.

Many drivers/riders are guilty of all those misdemeanors every single trip.

It could be an expensive day out for some....if the police can be persuaded to actually do their job.

Undertaking is one of the quickest ways to a date with the undertaker...

Very much so... all of these are an everyday occurrence...

Using an unroadworthy vehicle 400 baht - I see this multiple times daily.

Having no registration plate 500 baht - I see this multiple times daily.

Contravening emissions regulations 1,000 baht - 90% of transport busses, 50% of lorries, 10% of pickups on the road.

Not following the instructions of traffic signs 500 baht - I’m guilty of this myself daily !!!

Having no licence to show 200 baht - At a guess, 20% of drivers / riders

Negligent or "scary" driving 400 baht - 10% of cars and bikes - I see this daily

Driving on the footpath 500 baht - I see this daily, I see the police doing this regularly.

Illegal use of mobile phones (without such things as hands free devices) 400 baht - I see this daily.

Illegally stopping in restricted areas 300 baht - I see this daily, people stopping wherever they want (I call it the Thonglor syndrome)

Finally, they said that there was a 500 baht fine for overtaking on the left a practice known as undertaking - I do this daily !!! so does every other driver / rider on the roads !!!

The Police could make a fortune....   Now that they are not collecting a portion of the revenue from the Cameras I wonder if they will be greater incentive for them to actually get out and do their jobs...

But...  Can you imagine being stopped by a Policeman and being told you have a 400 baht fine for ’scary’ driving without being able to show you any proof ???  giving the corrupt police in Thailand that degree of power opens pandora’s box just a little wider....

At least they do stop, unlike here. And don't forget the Chinese are used to stopping on the right to look at their phones.

Thereby forcing faster (usually speeding) traffic to overtake on the left, which incurs a 500 Bhat fine. Hmm!

That's of course misleading, because undertaking is allowed if there is more than one lane.

It's only not allowed if it's a one lane road. (If the vehicle in front is signaling to do a right turn and it's possible to pass without driving over the hard should it's also allowed)

Scary attitude.

Of course you have to factor in the "ability to pay".

I have seen police wave through kids (who look about 12) with no helmets on at checkpoints because "No point stopping them. They not have money".

  • Popular Post

What is the fine for a policeman riding on the footpath without a crash helmet?

  • Popular Post

The reason I usually undertake is usually cos some Moron is driving in the right lane... and won't get out of the way...

No Thai pays any of those fines that come in the mail.

It was what they do back home, driving and riding on the right. So no fine ????

I think the average Policeman could retire just on that one.................

Could the same be said for speeding and DUI I wonder?

No its not fine. ????

OP: Finally, they said that there was a 500 baht fine for overtaking on the left a practice known as undertaking.

Is the fine doubled if the 'undertaking' is on the footpath or shoulder (sometimes footpath and shoulder are the same, like the soi I have to use every day). I've seen several footpaths marked for a 5,000 baht for motorbikes using them.

  • Popular Post

So they don't want undertaking but they also don't want motorbikes in the outside lane so they need to make up their minds

This Government Gazette must have a multitude of laws they think up but never enforce !
